It is always a mistake to look at God and his actions only from our view point. Yes the thought of our loved ones having to suffer is horrific. What we know of God is that he is Holy, he is, Just and Merciful. He is not arbitrary or capricious in his judgments. I liken our seeing loved ones separated from God as our seeing a dearly loved one tried and convicted of a horrible crime.
