But, honestly - I was REALLY busy in the 80's and I don't remember them too well.... I was raising my children and working and being part of the "Sandwich Generation" was doing so much for my aging parents - I barely remember listening to the radio.... and can hardly think of a single band that I liked... I mean, I've all but blocked out a whole decade.... except for remembering things I did with the kids and my parents... isn't that weird??? That said - I love classical, gospel, Aerosmith (I DO remember them), ZZ Topp, John Fogerty, John Mellencamp, Billie Holliday is the BEST and I like 'some' country music... I have a huge collection of 40's big band music (Mamma and Daddy used to dance to Glen Miller in the kitchen..lol) ... I think about the only thing I do not really care for .... is Disco and rap... Anybody wanna dance???

That decade was owned by U2 with honorable mention going to The Police. LA Glamrock and Euro-pop defined the decade though. The 70s was Led Zepplin. No debating that one! You know...you got a good point with U2. You got me to thinking about the 80's...and in alot of ways there were several HUGE genre specific "game changers." While U2 definitely laid the groundwork for Alternative Rock (how could I forget them?)...there were other HUGE influences in the 80's.. We had the #1 seller by a mile: Michael Jackson...pop music We had Metallica...spawned rythmic speed metal We had Madonna...not sure how to label her...but she did the whole feminist/sex thing. Best selling female by far. We had NWA...created gangsta rap Interestingly, and I didn't know this, but U2 didn't outsell any of these guys...and wasn't even a top 10 seller in the 80's. But their influence for their genre is NOT in doubt. Musical styles and genre's really expanded in the 80's. I'll give you the 70's with Led Zep...it was either/or for me. Zep or Floyd? Too tough to call...so I went with the Best seller. "The Wall" put Pink Floyd over the top for me. Either way...I can't stand either groups music...lol. Well sales isn't the main criteria in my judgement....its about innovation and breaking ground with something truly original and new. Pink Floyd wasn't as versatile as Zep but just as innovative in their own way. The one thing that puts Zep over the top is how many tried to emulate them. Not nearly as many tried with Pink Floyd. it's about who defined the era. One could always disagree and say that Dylan defined so much folk-rock band that, in any other decade besides the 60s he might have been "the man" And after thinking about it, Pearl Jam may have produced more clones than any band in history after U2 Christian music? 70 - Larry Norman invented the genre you are asking about but in my life, Lamb was the bright star of the 70s that faded for Keith Green to claim best of the 80s. 90s has to go to DC Talk who brought rock into mainstream with "Jesus Freak" and it's been that way ever since. Delirious is the reigning kings of this decade so far but for my money? P.O.D. is the boldest, most original and innovative christian band in history on their first 2 BRILLIANT albums. they broke christian music out of the cookie cutter mold and took it all the way to MTV

Totally agree with Yod on DCtalk...but I would replace Delirious with the Newsboys. And while POD is definitely awesome...they owe it all to Stryper! Michael W. Smith would be one. Michael and Amy Grant defined Adult Contemporary Christian music in the 80's. Was he a ground-breaker, though, with followers trying to emulate him? (Looking for perspective here) Christian music? 70 - Larry Norman invented the genre you are asking about I was out of the Contemporary Christian loop in the 70's, but I believe you are correct with this one. but in my life, Lamb was the bright star of the 70s that faded for Keith Green to claim best of the 80s. Lamb Keith Green - Interesting. I know he made a strong impression, but I don't see how you would consider he defined the 80's? 90s has to go to DC Talk who brought rock into mainstream with "Jesus Freak" and it's been that way ever since. Delirious is the reigning kings of this decade so far but for my money? P.O.D. is the boldest, most original and innovative christian band in history on their first 2 BRILLIANT albums. they broke christian music out of the cookie cutter mold and took it all the way to MTV DC Talk was definitely unique. Delirious? After their first album - which contained several songs that made it into church worship - I haven't heard their other albums making that much of an impression. Good point on P.O.D. Petra has got to fit in there somewhere. but I would replace Delirious with the Newsboys. Yeah, that makes more sense. They've been pretty tops for many years. And while POD is definitely awesome...they owe it all to Stryper! OK, I recall Stryper and Resurrection Band/Rez Band/Rez being the only hard rock/heavy metal genre among Christian music for a good long while. But were/are any of these artists the kinds of definers and innovators liek we see in the secular industry?

See what you all think? ~~~ Pre-70's and going beyond: Bill Gaither Imperials 70's: Larry Norman Don Francisco Evie Lamb Late 70's/early 80's: Keith Green 2nd Chapter of Acts 80's: Adult Contemporary Amy Grant Michael W. Smith Sandi Patti Steve Green Michael Card Twila Paris Pop-Rock Petra Mylon LeFevre & Brokenheart DeGarmo & Key White Heart Not-sure-how-to-classify-but-were-unique Steve Taylor Randy Stonehill Carman Hard Rock Rez Band (aka Resurrection Band ada Rez) Heave Metal Stryper Late 80's/early-mid 90's Rich Mullins DC Talk 90's Newsboys P.O.D. Kirk Franklin Hillsongs Mellenium Newsboys (still) Matt Redman I know I'm missing people, burt my mind is blank.
