i've always understood that the context in which he was saying it was to stop the practice of the women being disruptive in church. as i understand it, and i'm not saying i'm wrong, the women were not permitted to sit with their husbands like we do today, the women and children were in an area separate from the men. they were noisy for whatever reason, maybe trying to manage all their children, or maybe gossiping, or whatever.

i don't know where i heard that, or when, but it must have been decades ago, because the image in my mind regarding the women being silent in the church has always been that of a balcony full of yapping women.

When Paul was speaking about propriety in church in 1 Corinthians he said "let your women be silent in churches".

Was Paul referring to the before mentioned tongues issue or any speech?

1Co 14:27-35 MKJV

(27) If one speaks in a language, let it be by two, or at the most three, and in succession. And let one interpret.

(28) But if there is no interpreter, let him be silent in a church; and let him speak to himself and to God.

(29) And if there are two or three prophets, let them speak, and let the others judge.

(30) If a revelation is revealed to another sitting by, let the first be silent.

(31) For you may all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be comforted.

(32) And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

(33) For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

(34) Let your women be silent in the churches; for it is not permitted to them to speak, but to be in subjection, as the Law also says.

(35) And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home; for it is a shame for a woman to speak in a church.

I have also read this order was made to stop the pagan practice of women priestesses in Delphi(speaking in oracles) being infiltrated into the Corinthian church.

Anyone confirm what 1Corinthians 14:34 actually means?

From what I have heard, and studied, The pagan woman would shave their heads and pretend to be prophets for their godess. They would come into the Church yelling things in the middle of the service contrary to the gospel. On top of that you had Christians still holding onto Jewish customs and traditions in Corinth. That passage is in response to Situations, and traditions of that time. Directed toward a problem in the Corinthian church.

Interesting; I had not heard that before.

The theory I heard was that the word "woman", was misinterpreted and mistranslated as "woman" when it should have been "wives". Because, apparently the Greek word for woman and wives is the same but has different meanings depending on the context. If this is the case. Then its a great extra lesson with other scripture about what Paul teaches regarding women in church.

Gal 3:24 So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith.

Gal 3:25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian;

Gal 3:26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.

Gal 3:27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

From The Oxford Text Archive-------These Passages mean a lot to me , and are one of the reasons I call a female christian my brother For we are both Sons of God.I have no more authority over them that they do over me.My Father and there Father are One.God Bless all my Brothers. gord.

The custom of the day when men and women were in a gathering, the men were deferred to and the women silent. This was part of their obedience in their culture. If that was a shame if a woman got in the group and started talking or asking questions, then how much more the church of God? Women were not allowed to mix with the men in the synague either, probably not allowed to speak out there either. I don't see anything hard to understand about this, it was and probably still is, a middle East custom.

Paul said, "when the whole church be come together.....

I've heard many preachers say it is okay for women to speak in the church, then use the example of Luke's three virgin daughters prophecying. But what they forget is, is the girls were at Luke's house not at church.

In the last part of chapter 14, Paul says if any man thinks himself to be spirituaL, or a prophet let him acknowledge that these are the commandments of the Lord.

[As Jesus became the author of eternal salvation to all those who obey Him,I strongly recommend obediance in the church also instead of trying to figure out ways to make it mean something other than what it says.]

church services were typically held in houses in the early years after Christ's resurrection.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
