I was a part of a house church fellowship that broke off of a large church after some discord. We were sure we were seeking the Lord. I found out the hard way though it was operating like a cult.

If the leader is the focus - run for your life.

If you have to affirm with the leader any words from the Lord for you - run for your life.

If you cannot question anything the leader says or does without benig told you are in sin or rebellion - run for your life.

I could go on.

I was raised in a cult. I'd like to think I've mostly grown past it as an adult...but I have moments where those attitudes take hold of me. I suffered severe rebellion once leaving the group myself (I stayed connected after my parents had left, much to their disappointment and fear)

After Herb died, they changed their theology, apologised to everyone and have apparently come in line with main-stream teaching?

A Brief History of the Worldwide Church of God,

now known as Grace Communion International

In the early 1930s, Herbert Armstrong began a ministry that eventually became the Worldwide Church of God. He had many unusual doctrines. These he taught so enthusiastically that eventually more than 100,000 people attended weekly services. After he died in 1986, church leaders began to realize that many of his doctrines were not biblical. These doctrines were rejected, and the church is now in full agreement with the statement of faith of the National Association of Evangelicals. To reflect these doctrinal changes, the church changed is name to Grace Communion International in April 2009.

When I was in the army I attended New Teastement Christian Church for a while. I left thought they were realy wierd.
