12 And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided.” (edited to add the reference : GENESIS 22)

I was attending a Bible study back in february when the pastor said that this has some kind of "prophetic" meaning. He said there is a mystery in the fact that Abraham lifted his eyes and looked and saw "behind" him.

Some sort of past-present-future connection of some sort. He kind of threw it at us without elaborating. I wrote it down and now months later I found it.

I was wondering if anyone ever thought about this passage and the meaning of this?

I understand the ram is also symbolic of Jesus... also the only son of God. What interests me here is the "behind".

Normally, when you lift up your eyes, you look in front of you, or at least, above you. :noidea:

I wonder if he was hinting at this

1 Peter 1

18For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

Good topic, fromIslam2Christ. Interesting thought, Candice. I am stumped on this one. Hope others will participate in this discussion and speculate on the possible significance of this.

A ram caught in a thicket was most likely makin' some noise, telling Abraham here I am, the sacrifice sent by God.

As far as the ram being behind him, if we look back to the very beginning even Adam was a pre figure of Christ who was to come.

Romans chapter 5 verse 14

Never the less death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them who had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression,

who is the figure of him that was to come.

Interesting that Adam was a prophesy of Christ. Could it be that the " plan " was already in effect before the creation of Adam?

Seems so does it not?

I don't thing the looking behind means anything prophetic imo.Abraham simply looked and saw the ram.

Not so sure about that.

The Bible is not written like our literature, recording events like news stories.

Every word, every description, is carefully selected and for a specific purpose.

You just got to find what the purpose is.

AMEN. That's exactly why it is the Word of God, and not mere words of men!

Candice, that verse you quoted is definitely ringing right to me.

The ram -- the sacrificial animal that God provided Himself -- behind as in before Abraham.... I think this other passage in John confirms the verse you quoted:

John 8:58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am."

I don't believe there is anything to the verse. I may study it some more later but I don't think there is anything to it.

In studying this passage I have found this quote concerning this part of the story:

Some have said that, in providing the ram as a substitute for Isaac,

Maybe the writer did not want to bother adding " he turned around and saw a ram", just "he saw a ram behind him"

Sort of like in a conversation one of us might say "I saw this car coming up behind me".

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
