'Crematorium to heat pool' defended

24 January 2011 06:11pm

A council has defended "insulting and insensitive" plans to heat a swimming pool with a crematorium incinerator.

Redditch Borough Council in Worcestershire has drawn up proposals to use excess heat generated by the incinerator at the town's crematorium to warm the water for swimmers at the nearby Abbey Stadium Sports Centre.

A spokesman for the Conservative-run authority said: "Redditch Borough Council, with a commitment to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, is considering proposals to re-use energy at its crematorium to heat a nearby leisure centre. The heat would otherwise be exhausted into the atmosphere."

The plans, which will be discussed at a full council meeting on February 7, have been branded "sick" by opponents.

Roger McKenzie, Unison West Midlands regional secretary, said: "These proposals by Redditch Borough Council are sick and an insult to local residents.

"I call on Redditch Borough Council to apologise to local residents for the insulting and insensitive proposals, and to work with Unison to fight for a fairer budget settlement from the Conservative-led Government."

He added: "It goes to show yet again that the Conservatives know the price of everything and the value of nothing. Unfortunately, local authorities are increasingly pursuing desperate polices in a reaction to the unprecedented spending cuts imposed from Whitehall.

"This just shows that the Government's slashing of funding is impacting on the ability of local authorities to provide our services."

The council spokesman added: "Redditch Borough Council recognises this is a sensitive proposal and is therefore keen to ensure everyone interested fully understands the details."

He said a series of "detailed briefings" with the press and public, including local funeral directors and faith groups, would be held on Thursday.

I'm not sure how I feel about that, I mean on one hand its a great renewable source of energy, on the other hmm thats tough to answer. Its just the heat off the furnance that is being used yet the idea that heat may have come because of a loved one. wow thats just a tough thing to answer. My husband on the other hand says its a good source of energy and well why not use it as long as its just heat coming through. Looking forward to others giving their opinions.

It's just heat produced by burning and it certainly doesn't hurt the dearly departed. It IS insensitive to the families of those that have passed on though and their feelings should be respected before worrying about cost savings. Cut somewhere else; we are all having to do it these days.

Redditch Borough Council needs to say, "Ok, never mind. It was just a thought".

If people are getting offended, why even bother? It's just a swimming pool.

I guess further savings could be made by using the smoke to cure bacon, and the ashes to organically fertilize farmers fields ...or perhaps all the heat generated from the coucils proposals could help warm the local pool more effectively.

Logically, it works.

Emotionally, forget it.

Ok sooooooo what is with all the "emotions" ... you bury a body of a loved one and you dont worry about it becoming " fertilizer" for the ground.... If you cremate a body what do you do with the ashes ??? either put them in a pot and "display " it or scatter them so that the wind blows them anywhere it wants to :noidea::noidea:

I must be missing something here because it is NOT as if they are suggesting that they put the bodies into a fire to warm the water...the bodies are going to be cremated ... the heat is normally just blown into the air so what on earth is the problem with using the wasted heat to benifit the living ??? it is NOT going to affect the person who is being cremated so PLEASE tell me what the difference is between blowing the heat into the atmosphere and blowing it into a heating system :noidea::noidea::noidea::noidea:

Anyone who has been in a council building have realised that they have entered a place that is extremely hot. A person could be in swimwear and still feel hot. If they turned down the heat a bit or channeled that heat into the pool or to council homes then would really save. The ones that came up with such idea were probably sweating in the room they were in.

Blessings

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
