It is not "scriptural" but neither does it violate Scripture. In Bible times, children took care of their parents and families lived and worked together. Social Security was not needed as a result.

It does say that he who does not work should not eat, but if there are limited jobs available and one has made a good living then yes he should retire and give up the job to a younger person. Unfortunately everyone wants an office job in the airconditioning and no one wants to work and get their hands dirty. They also want as much pay as the owner gets - without his expenses. So I agree, parents should retire and children look after them as Ruth did for Naomi. This however is not that time and these children have been brought up to put the parents in a home. This is what their parents did so that they could 'have a life' . They forget that what their children see that is what they get. I think I got off topic.

Where is it in scripture that an older person must get out of the way of a younger person?

That is a socialist idea, and one that will be used to deny health care to older folks. Its also a social justice "gospel".

Like anything else one can over do saving and make it an idol. But we should make sure we can take care of our family in our old age.

it's my understanding that in many places the early church combined all thier posessions and shared equally.... i don't know of any place that one can practice that today outside of some cults.

I believe we should work as long as we are able.In old age this work may not be our usual employment but we can still be useful in other ways.Working keeps the mind and body active and with less physical duties we can continue into the twilight years.Australian farmers tend to work till very old and they seem to be healthier for it.

Agreed. it does not have to be in the same line of work, or as long in hours, but working keeps an active mind (if one is physically able to work). I would like nothing better than to work in passing on what I have learned to new job seekers in some sort of mentorship role when I cannot physically do some of the stuff I do now.

I want to die with my boots on, doing what I love, but running from an elephant while using a walking stick is a bit of a stretch.....

I did not mention idleness in that post Jack. I referred to the mindset that older folks should be forced from their jobs to make way for the young.

Yeah, I suppose I jumped the gun with idleness comment. When talking about the retired community many people assume that without a job they aren't doing anything of worth. I was merely doing a pre-emptive strike on that mindset. Also, I was not advocating forced retirement, only the benefits that retirement can have for both sides.
