As far as I am aware there is no scripture that tells us not to gamble. If a person believes that it is a sin to gamble then it becomes sin for them Rom 14:23......whatever is not of faith is sin.

Thats my 2cents worth :)

Well if you can actually make a living from gambling, then its not really a gamble. Either your cheating or your playing poker and are really good at reading people, and bluffing. So then it comes to, is it wrong to play poker ?

???

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 1 Timothy 2:1-3

??

Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Matthew 6:31-34

?

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:19-21

1 Tim 6:6-10

6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

NKJV

It serves no purpose but to gain riches through chance what profit is there to the work of these Hands to others around?

Matt 13:22-23

22 Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.

NKJV

You say this does not apply yet I have seen many destroyed by addiction to gambling are we not our brothers keeper?

Phil 2:1-4

2 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

NKJV

You say I am not weak here but then is it not the responsibility of the strong to uphold the weak?

Rom 15:1-6

15 We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification. 3 For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me." 4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. 5 Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, 6 that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

NKJV

We are to uphold the Spirit of Christ and Love not the world or the things in it and certainly not to focus on chance but purposed in mind on intent of Godliness... chance is seen only in two ways in Scripture one by determining God's Will in a matter / the other by taking the garment sewn for Christ in love as they crucified Him.... Which camp does the attainment of wealth through chance belong? May God bless the minds in determining this path! Love Steven

Difficult question to answer. Do we consider it work? He probably does, and it is probably hard work. What and how he does with it is more important?

I found this...

Pro 24:29 Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.

Pro 24:30 I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

Pro 24:31 And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.

If this alludes to actual work, or spiritual work makes a difference I think.

If a Christian is doing it, and using what he is blessed with (for it is all the Lords, is it not), for the good, then maybe ok. As long as he is using Christian methods to do what he does?

But places like Vegas have so many temptations, and if he is good at it, the temptations increase because they are put there by the casino's to keep people like him there (they call people like him "Whales", and everything they ask for, accommodation, food, drink, women, cars, air tickets, etc, they get. A staff member is allocated to the one person, to cater for every need).

So I am not sure if gambling is a sin, (like anything it can lead to sin if it is not) but the peripherals that are on offer certainly are.

Just how strong are we to resist the temptation? That is why Paul says RUN AWAY!

I think enoob has the right idea. Since Scripture does not address it, we have to look at its fruit.

I think we should all be very cautious before condemning gambling. Many of us take small risks with our money every day. For example, I invest in shares, for which there is no certain outcome. I take a measured risk, knowing the expected result but accepting that there is some randomness to it. Likewise when people invest in real estate. I think the principle of the bible is to be wise stewards of our money. Do not sink it into situations where there is excessive risk, but avoiding risk altogether by burying your money is also not a wise biblical idea.

I would think that ones attitude about gambling would make a difference in whether or not it is a sin.

gambling potentially is:

  • by logical extension, distrusting God to provide, way of making money in case He does not provide all we need
  • is rooted in greed, no? love of money is love of money, even if cause is or may seem noble
  • by logical extension, a form of irresponsible stewardship; we were entrusted with everything we have, but gambling, since it involves risk of losing it(sometimes all of it), irresponsible stewardship
  • by logical extension, a discontent with what God did provide, us wanting more

all in all, i think it is always better not to get involved with gambling in any way, no matter how noble or justifiable it may seem. a job that provides enough can be found. or start your own business.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
