Rom 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Would anyone like to explain what the bolded part of the scripture means. Too many Christians like to quote the first part of the passage, and omit the second. Although I know it is pivotal to the verse I am not sure if it is a predestination thing, or just that we work according to His purpose and thus our work provides fruit?

Who gave you the can opener? :whistling: Are we going fishing? I see worms .

Brother, I think God has elected the Church, predestined the Church body to certain things, and that's about the extent of it. I don't believe in personal predestination, I believe our promises are conditional on us being a member of the body of Christ.

1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for possession, so that you might speak of the praises of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

 Nope seriously. I would like to think it is not a predestination thing, despite the following verses. I like your take on the subject, but I would like to hear others.

Predestination can be very fuzzy picture to look at. After all we believe in a God that knows everything and is all powerful but at the same time gave us the free will to choose. I think this almost becomes a pride issue with people because they start to think they know everything just like God does.

I believe yes God knows everything and by that he does know who he has saved. The flip side of that coin is we don't know and thus we need to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. We must starve our prideful selves, pick up our crosses and follow Jesus daily.

I get your point, but as to my question.

If we do that, all things will work together for the good?

Because we are the ones called according to His purpose? Or were we called and are now working to His purpose?

See what I am trying to fathom out?

I see it a bit differently. What is being "called according to His purpose" mean? What is our "calling"? In 2 Peter 1:5-11, we see we are to be even more diligent to make your call and election sure. If we are attempting to do work outside of our calling, we will not prosper and may stumble. If we are working in our calling, He will make sure it works together for the good.

Are you called according to His purpose?

Then He works all things together for good for you.

That's all you need to know.

Good question.

This is what the Asbury Bible Commentary has to say.

E. Assurance (8:28-39)

This brings the presentation of God's provision of salvation to the climax. This salvation was planned by God before the foundation of the world (cf. Eph 1:4). He has a specific purpose and design that he will follow through. Therefore, we know and are confident that the ultimate goal of salvation, our final glorification, will be achieved (vv. 28-30).

The word predestined (prohorizō) occurs in vv. 29-30. This has been misinterpreted to mean that God arbitrarily determined in advance certain individuals to be saved. This, however, is not the meaning of the word. This word occurs six times in the NT: Ac 4:28; Ro 8:29, 30; 1Co 2:7; and Eph 1:5, 11. In all other occurrences, the context indicates clearly that it has to do with the plan, the design, the condition of some event, or salvation. It is also so used here (Murray, 1:318). Those who participate in salvation are those who love God. They are called according to God's purpose (prothesis, v. 28). In the entire NT when purpose (prothesis) is used of God, it has to do with the plan, the design, or the condition of some event, never with certain persons. God's purpose regarding salvation is that all be saved and none be lost (1Ti 2:4; Tit 2:11; 2Pe 3:9). The call is the invitation addressed by God to all human beings. It is inclusive, not exclusive.

In v. 29 the object of predestine is to be conformed to the likeness of his Son. In v. 30 the object seems to be certain persons. These persons, however, are those whom God foreknew, not those arbitrarily chosen by God. Foreknowledge does not cause them to have faith, but rather their faith causes God to foreknow. My knowing does not cause you to do something. But your doing causes me to know. In the same way, God's knowledge does not cause us to do something, but our doing causes God to know. Since, however, God is not bound by time, he can know before we do it.

To be honest, it is not a Bible Commentary with which I am familiar, but I think I can agree with this. Unless anyone would like to point out any errors.

Ok I can agree with that, but we need to define "our calling" a bit. I bet there are quiet a few opinions of what it might be.

Rom 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

I think the part "for those who are called according to his purpose." is a further description of "those who love God".

It could also be describing what is good as "his purpose" so, those who love God are being called according to his purpose which is good.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
