Let the chips fall as they may. You can't keep doing the same things over and over and expect a different outcome. It was the Dems who passed the stimulus bill, spending trillions on "shovel ready" projects that weren't so shovel ready, bailed out the unions at the expense of the share holders, failed to create or save millions of jobs, and those that they did cost the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars per job. And let's not forget Fannie Mae and Fannie Mac. How many billions of dollars has the socialist government of Barack Obama thrown away with these thieves? I know that the previous administrations all had a hand in this, but it was the Dems who have totally destroyed our economy. I say let them feel the sting and reap what they have sown. We are in a hole so deep that there is now daylight to be seen!

Keep in mind the stimulus bill was about 36% tax cuts.

It's too bad that these discussions frequently turn into Dem vs. Rep, Obama vs. Bush, etc. Because the problem goes much further back than that:

Not to sound like a radical, but I am of the opinion we're beyond the point where elections are going to fix our problems.

If it is so, then we don't have a revenue problem at all...we have a spending problem. If the Democrats don't take that seriously, and the threat of default is the ONLY thing they will take seriously, then I say let the chips (and the dollar) fall where it may.

It's a horrible alternative to what could be done if they would only take it seriously. It is hypocritical and disingenious for the Democrats to blame Republicans for the way our debt has quadrupled under their watch, and for Obama to just now start taking negotiations seriously and then pressuring everyone about how late it is.

It will be a catastrophe if they don't come to an agreement, but a worse catastrophe if they don't come to a solution.

we don't have to default on our debts immediately, just cut out most of the un necessary spending. foreign aid, UN dues, non necessary government jobs and research. it will be up to the treasury department to pay off obligations first and let the rest of it go just as we do in our own homes.

No tax raises are really not healthy right now and I don't think we should take that off the table either. If they do not raise the debt ceiling, then we should raise taxes to cover the things and programs that "we the people" want to keep. Then the decision will end up with what "we the people" are willing to pay for. Bring our military home from all over the world and put them on our borders, or have the other countries foot the bill for our military to be there if they want them.

I can't go along with raising taxes, but the two points you made, that I made into bold print. If we did those two things, we would see our debt go down.

Speaking of the UN, we should just kick them out of the country and way to go Texas. (Texans know what I'm talking about)

The first thing we need to do is end the waste and fraud.

1. No more loopholes for the very rich.

2. Transfer programs to the private sector that are better handled by the private sector

3. End unnecesary programs

4. End programs that are outdated

5. Get rid of duplicate programs

6. There are people who are getting money from programs who are not qualifed to receive it.

7. End federal grants to unnecessary studies (like shrimips on treadmills, and the cowboy poetry festival).

Billions of $$$ are being wasted. The thing is, why not start there? Why not start the cuts on the wasteful things we can agree need to be cut?

All of the tax hikes and spending cuts won't accomplish anything if we don't put that money on the debt and get rid of wasteful spending. When a regular person needs to get out of debt, they get rid of the cable TV, the internet, movie rentals and all unnecessary spending. They find ways to make as many cuts as possbile and then put that extra money on the debt. If they cut enough spending but use the money to take cruise, they have defeated their efforts. Our gov't needs spending reform as well as spending cuts. They need a new attitude about spending so that the money we do manage to save gets put directly on the debt and brings us back from from the brink of bankruptcy as a nation.

I hear different figures; 48%, 51% of people don't pay taxes, and most receive $ from the federal govt.

They vote. Which of them will vote themselves a pay cut? Very depressing. We don't need just a deal on a debt ceiling, we need a whole new attitude.

I'd accept a cut in Social Security, getting very near that age. Would even accept means testing, though it is unfair. But would enough people accept it? We are getting near the point in redistribution to chill motivation to achieve.

True, but when the Republicans have the majority, and they haven't introduced or passed any legislation that they ran on (repeal and replace. create jobs, cutting spending etc etc) You can't blame it on democrats.

Introduced - I'm pretty sure I recall having seen them introduce some things that went with their promise?

No, the House of Representatives has been in Repuclican hands just since November. The Democrats still control the Senate.

And since they also control the Executive branch and thus have the power the of the veto, the Replicans are still at a disadvantage.
