There is some (I believe legitimate) question as to whether Satan and the being Lucifer described in Isaiah are one and the same.

Satan is a title, not a given name. Satan is Hebrew for adversary. It is used 15 times in the entire Old Testament.

Lucifer means light-bearer and is rendered Heylel. It is used exactly once in all of Scripture.

I am personally not 100% convinced that Satan's 'name' is Lucifer.

Here is an interesting take:

If you don't want to read the article - note this:

The Hebrew word is: הילל - "heylel"

Because this word is only found once in Scripture, it is difficult to find the actual meaning beyond it's word origin.

See here

It's word origin is: הלל - "halal"

Here are the different translations for "halal" -

KJV (165) - boast, 10; celebrate, 1; commended, 2; foolish, 3; fools, 2; give, 1; glory, 14; mad, 8; marriage, 1; praise, 117; rage, 2; renowned, 1; shine, 3

NAS (165) - acted insanely, 1; arrogant, 1; boast, 9; boasted, 1; boastful, 3; boasts, 3; boasts boast, 1; deride, 1; drive madly, 1; flash forth, 2; give praise, 1; giving praise, 1; glory, 8; go mad, 1; going mad, 1; mad, 1; madness, 1; make its boast, 1; makes a mad, 1; makes fools, 1; making fools, 1; offers praises, 1; praise, 90; praised, 20; praises, 1; praising, 5; race madly, 1; renowned, 1; sang praises, 1; shone, 2; sing praises, 1; wedding songs, 1

Source

So for whatever reason, the translator(s) into the Latin Vulgate chose the application of "shine" and for whatever reason translated this into "Light bearer" - which is "Lucifer" in Latin.

So whether or not the passage is speaking of Satan, Satan himself is not nor has ever been named "Lucifer".

Never gave it much thought, but I always thought they were one in the same.

Every lexicon I have says it's Lucifer, light bringer, light bearer or such.

i would add that back when I was messing with the dark side, they say that Lucifer and Satan are two different entities...... but you just gotta know they lie a lot.

I agree. His nature changed and his office did too, so too his name.

We see this throughout scripture. Jacob became Israel.

Afterall, he was the covering chrub. It wouldn't be a stretch to imagine his name having to do with Light.
