I had no idea halal was so prevalent in North America. What is your opinion?

WND Exclusive

March of Shariah continues with growth of halal foods

Supermarkets, restaurants often cater to demands of Muslim customers

Specialty markets first supplied "halal" food to Muslims in America, then restaurants joined in the effort and now the very grocery stores from which you buy hamburger and chops are offering food that has been slaughtered according to Islamic ritual, according to responses from food outlets contacted by WND.

Islam requires Muslims to eat such "halal" food, which as part of the religion's rituals already has been dedicated to the Muslim god Allah.

And it's an alarming issue for Christians because the Bible warns against eating food previously dedicated to idols.

Mark Biltz of El Shaddai Ministries in Bonney Lake, Wash., has explained in previous WND reports that eating food that's "halal" would be the same as disregarding the Bible's commands.

"From the Christian standpoint, Allah would be an idol," Biltz told WND earlier.

What does the Bible REALLY say about what's considered food and what isn't? Find out, plus learn the spectacular destiny of mankind that's rarely mentioned in church in this autographed No. 1 best-seller!

He explained, "In order for it to be halal, they have to slaughter the animal facing Mecca ... and they have to say this prayer about Allah is great and greater than all other gods. Muslims can only eat food that is halal, that has been sacrificed to their idol, Allah ... and with Allah's name prayed over it."

(Story continues below)

A spokeswoman for Safeway groceries told WND this week that the chain does, in fact, carry such food that Christians would consider has been offered to idols.

"We do carry halal items. We have a line of all-natural foods called Open Nature. Most of our Open Nature lamb is halal," the official told WND.

Similar responses came from Walmart, ShopRite, Costco, SuperSaver and Whole Foods Market. There were no responses to the WND inquires from other companies, such as Kroger.

WND previously reported that restaurants such as Outback Steakhouse, KFC, Popeyes and Sizzler already are listed on an Islamic website as providing halal foods.

To be considered halal, the poultry, lamb or cattle must be slaughtered in a specific way including the shahada, or prayer, being said over each bird or animal. According to a Halal Authority website, slaughtering animals by this method can only be done by a practicing Muslim, who "blesses" the blade, faces Mecca, and prays to Allah before each animal's throat is cut, while reciting a ritual prayer.

A major concern among Christians is not necessarily that the food is offered, but that the food is prepared in the Muslim ritual fashion with little or no notice for others to be aware of the accommodation to Muslims.

Parents in Britain were outraged last fall to learn that British school children were being fed meat slaughtered in accordance with Muslim teaching, regardless of their religion.

In the United States, Halal meals are making headlines as well. An Ohio death row inmate sued the state claiming the failure to provide halal meals was a restraint on his religious freedom.

The state of Ohio now is dealing with the demand.

Islamonline.net online is boasting, "Historically, halal certified products have been hard to come by in the U.S. from mainstream brands, but times are changing."

And the Halal Authority website added, "Even in every day life a Muslim is commanded to commence all his deeds in the name of Allah. To slaughter in the name of Allah is compulsory and necessary."

The London Daily Mail also recently reported how supermarkets in the United Kingdom were selling halal meat secretly.

An investigation found that most New Zealand lamb sold in major British supermarkets was halal, meaning that the prayer "In the name of Allah, who is the greatest" is said at the time of slaughter, the report said.

Another Daily Mail report found fast food giant McDonald's admitting to selling halal chicken nuggets in all 1,200 of its British restaurants, reportedly from U.S. supplier Cargill.

Spokesman Mike Martin denied Cargill, the "second largest U.S. beef processor and third largest U.S. turkey processor," was providing U.S. consumers with halal products.

There was no comment from Kroger, which operates thousands of grocery stores across the U.S., on its halal offerings but there is an online petition demanding that the company provide a halal section in their stores.

Whole Foods Market, with more than 300 stores in North America and Britain, already has made halal a large part of the product line.

The company website explains, "Halal is Islamic dietary law that applies, among other things, to meat and poultry, specifically prescribing certain slaughtering and processing practices.

"Saffron Road has created the first line of certified halal frozen entrees and they're currently only available here at Whole Foods Market."

And according to a "Pure Halal Center" website, talks are under way with Herr, the third largest snack food company in America, to certify halal products.

PHC said American Muslims represent $170 billion in spending power each year, and the market is growing.

"This [halal] is coming to a store near you. This is all over," Biltz warned in WND's earlier report.

"At a restaurant, you're not going to know [if the food is halal] unless you ask," he said. "I think we need to be aware of these things because they don't want Christians to know because they just want to sell it and get it out there. ... A lot of people don't want you to know it's going all over the world."

But the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America's was pleased.

A Fall 2010 newsletter said, "Islamophobia has really been muddying the waters this year, be it attacks on Campbell Soup for having halal options or Muslims wanting a Community Center in Lower Manhattan. Given the negativity in the air, it is heartening to share the many strides that halal is making, especially at the retail level."

But Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association also has expressed alarm.

"To see where things are going with this whole halal business, look no further than the U.K., where grocers have gone whole-hog – pardon the expression – on offering halal meat but without telling anybody about it.

"Shariah law is no longer creeping up on us. It's bearing down on us at full gallop. It's time for Christian civilization to grab the reins of this runaway horse and stop it dead in its tracks. No Shariah law in America, period."

Biltz has explained the command for Christians is clear. He notes New Testament instructions specifically warning Christians:

"Stay away from food that has been offered to idols (which makes it unclean), any kind of sexual sin, eating animals that have been strangled, and blood." (Acts 15:20, New Century Version)

Subway promotes its halal products mostly in the United Kingdom, and spokesman Les Winograd has told WND: "The way we look at it from a business point of view is here's a group of individuals who traditionally cannot eat out. They cannot eat your average name-brand fast food. When they travel, they have to bring their own food. They're consumers, they're buying things. We want to be able to tell them, 'There's a safe place for you to eat.' That's definitely worth something in their eyes. Here's a brand that cares about me, too. It's kind of an untapped market, so building brand equity is a good thing."

In 2009, Domino's Pizza enraged many British customers when it completely removed pork from its pizzas in favor of halal-only meat at three of its branches in Birmingham, Bradford and Blackburn. By mid-2010, the company reversed itself and returned to its original menu because of poor customer response.

The Campbell Soup Company also caused a stir when it launched an expanded line of vegetarian soups all certified as halal.

My husband and I talked about this when my favorite indian restaurant closed. Another one we wanted to try had a big sign up that they were halal and I could not bring myself to go there. It would be seen as supporting a false religion.

Halal in grocery stores is easily identifiable. One can avoid it like you could kosher foods, or asian foods or whatever ethnic background you wish.

Halal is like organic food label which is being substituted by Majelis. Majelis is certified or money making version of halal. Halal is a gimmick though becuase there is no guarrantee of its halaliness.

I wish we all could eat meat that has been slaughtered as Leviticus states it should be....

As a Messianic believer, kosher meat is very important to us, yet as Christians we do not follow our own Biblical rules...

I wonder if that does not makes us appear hypocritical??? The Muslim world calls both Jew and Gentile "infidels" because we say we "are" one thing but our lifestyle quite often shows something else.

As far as Halal foods...NO...I must not eat those, none of us should. Even though each animal slaughtered in a Muslim regimen may not have prayer done over each individual animal, a Muslim has prayed to "Allah" over his entire herd, dedicating those animals to a "false god"..

Just my thoughts on this..

I am noticing some of the gluten free foods have the label on them, breads, crackers, etc. Could become a problem for me and others.

I guess I became aware of the halal after seeing a restaurant that was advertising as halal.

In reading the Bible we as Christians are told not to eat foods offered to idols. 1 Cor. 8:7, 10:19.

What I find amazing is how it seemingly came in unnoticed. Now I will have to read the label not just for ingredients but also for halal. Chicken, beef, lamb, bread cookies, crackers etc. if you eat unknowingly it is forgiven but to eat it knowingly??? You know the answer.

I eat Halal food all the time, doesn't bother me.. but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it. I buy regular chicken at the supermarket not Halal or Kosher.. what's the big deal. And if regular chicken was not available then I would buy either or, preferbly Kosher.. but why should I be limited since there is one God in Heaven?

1 Corinthians 8:1-10

1 Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. 2 And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. 3 But if anyone loves God, this one is known by Him.

4 Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. 5 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords), 6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.

7 However, there is not in everyone that knowledge; for some, with consciousness of the idol, until now eat it as a thing offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8 But food does not commend us to God; for neither if we eat are we the better, nor if we do not eat are we the worse.

9 But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak. 10 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, will not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat those things offered to idols?

Sorry but Allah is NOT a god and he doesn't exists. That's why is not a big deal if I eat Halal food or not.

For the marketers who are trying to grab money though, by making Halal products.. that is something that is something altogether different. I would not be for that because it propagates false gods.

There are many gods and the Bible even states that. How can you say that he is not??

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
