What Did Jesus Do In Hell?

This Week’s Feature Article by Jack Kelley

“I believe in God the Father Almighty Creator of Heaven and Earth and in Jesus Christ, his Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty” (Excerpt from the Apostle’s Creed).

Recently a woman wrote with the following question. She said, “I have just discovered that some of my friends believe when Jesus became sin He took on the nature of Satan and went to hell where He was tormented by Satan and his demons until God called from heaven and said ‘enough’ and then the Holy Spirit entered Him again and Jesus became the 1st born again man. I don’t believe this is true and have been looking for Biblical answers for them can you help?”

I’ve heard this teaching a number of times, and I’m convinced there are several problems with it. The verse her friends were referring to is 2 Cor. 5:21, “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” Jesus bore the penalty for every sin mankind ever had or ever would commit as if He Himself was guilty of them all. This took place on the cross during the last three hours of His suffering that ended with His death. Becoming sin for us is what made God turn away from Him, taking the light from the world, and it’s what caused Him to say, My God, My God why have you forsaken me? (Matt. 27:45-46).

Taking on the sin of the world caused a separation between the Father and the Son that had never occurred before, and while Jesus had steeled Himself against the physical abuse He was suffering, He was not prepared for that. It’s the only part of the whole ordeal He couldn’t bear in silence.

At the end of that time, knowing that all was completed and so the Scripture would be fulfilled, He asked for a drink. Then He said, “It is finished,” and died (John 19:28-30). This was the end of His suffering. He had done what He came to do, and that’s to die for the sins of the world (John 1:29). There would be no more suffering on our account. This is confirmed in the Greek word John used in the Lord’s statement. It’s tetelesti, a form of the Greek verb teleo, which means to accomplish or complete. It also means to discharge a debt, and in the Lord’s day it was an accounting term that meant nothing further was owing. The debt we owed to God was paid in full. There would have been no reason for the Lord to endure further torment.

Here’s Another Problem

The Gospel of Luke makes reference to a brief conversation Jesus had with one of the two men being crucified with Him that gives rise to another problem. While one of the men hurled insults at Him, the other one declared the Lord’s innocence and said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:39-43)

Jesus said He was going to Paradise, and yet the Apostle’s Creed I quoted from above said He descended into Hell. Which was it? For the answer, let’s go to the Bible’s most detailed description of the after life experience as it was before the cross. It’s the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus and it’s found in Luke 16:19-31.

Tell Us A Story

“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

“The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

“But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

“He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

“Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’

“‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

“He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Some call this story a parable, but I think it was the account of something that really happened. The Lord’s parables generally weren’t about actual people but were hypothetical in nature. In this story we see real people in a real situation. It’s almost as if He expected His audience to know who He was talking about.

I think the Lord was pointing to His own future by saying that God gave us His word as a guide for life and death, but if people don’t believe it they won’t be persuaded even if someone (Himself for instance) comes back from the dead. Because of this, I’m skeptical of the popular stories about people who claim to have been to heaven or hell and have been allowed to return and tell us about what it’s like. If God refused to let Lazarus come back to warn the rich man’s five brothers, why would He suddenly let all kinds of people come back to warn people now?

Back To Our Subject

But our topic here is what Jesus did after He died and the story of the rich man and Lazarus can help us understand that as well.

The spiritual condition of these two men is not revealed in so many words. But by their destinations we can tell what it was. Upon his death, angels carried Lazarus to Abraham’s side. This term was the Jewish expression for a place of comfort in Sheol, the abode of the dead, that was also called Paradise. It’s the place Jesus said He was going to in Luke 23:43. It was where all believers from the time before the cross went until the resurrection took them to heaven. In the early church, some believed that Paradise was the actual Garden of Eden and was neither in Heaven nor on Earth. Being taken there indicates Lazarus had died believing in a coming redeemer who would pay the penalty for His sins and qualify him for the resurrection to eternal life.

When the rich man died he was taken to hell. The Greek word for hell is Hades. It’s equivalent to the Hebrew word Sheol which, as I said, is the abode of the dead. That means it’s the same place where Lazarus went, but while Lazarus enjoyed a place of comfort, the rich man’s lot was agony in the fire. This tells us he was not a believer. He could see Lazarus but he couldn’t join him. The time for choosing his eternal destiny ended at his death just like it does for us. Hebrews 9:27 tells us man is destined to die but once and after that to face judgment.

Paradise was a only a temporary place for believers, who could not enter heaven until the blood of Jesus was sprinkled on the altar there (Hebrews 9:11-12). Since then all believers who die go directly to Heaven (Phil 1:21-23, 2 Cor. 5:6-8).

The part of Hades where the rich man went is also a temporary place. Rev. 20:13 tells us at the Great White throne judgment Hades will give up the dead that are in it and each person will face their final judgment before being cast into the lake of fire.

So although it wasn’t this way at the beginning, somewhere along the way Hades, or hell as we call it, came to be known as the place where unbelievers spend eternity in suffering and torment. I think this misunderstanding is at least partially responsible for the false teaching that Jesus was tormented by Satan there.

When Jesus went into Hades, He went as a conqueror, not as a victim. In the Bible there are only two references to the time between His death and His resurrection and both support this position. As we saw in Luke 23:43 He said He was going to Paradise immediately after He died and He was taking one of the men dying next to him along. And in 1 Peter 3:18-20 we’re told that by the power of the Holy Spirit He preached to the disobedient spirits imprisoned there, so He must have visited the other side of Hades as well. But it was not for the purpose of suffering. It was for the purpose of reminding them that their punishment was just and well deserved.

But Wait, There’s More

Finally, our writer mentioned that her friends believe Jesus became the first born again man after God put a stop to His suffering and the Holy Spirit entered Him again. But as we’ve just seen the Holy Spirit was with the Lord when He preached to the disobedient spirits. More importantly, being born again is the result of accepting the Lord’s death as payment for all our sins. Jesus never sinned, and He didn’t have a sin nature. True, He became sin for us, but He had no need to be born again. On the contrary, He’s the one who made it possible for us to be born again.

In summary, there’s no Biblical support for the belief that the Lord’s suffering on our behalf continued after His death. Selah 09-01-12

Amen~!

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:9-16

Even Devils Know (And Tremble)

And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ. Luke 4:41

All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. John 6:37

Interesting article that has helped to shed some light in areas that I had previously not considered. The wages of sin is death and that is simply what Jesus suffered for us along with the torcher that his captures decided to do unto him. I still am not clear on the whole issue surrounding what happens when we die and I will probably go start at thread about it to discuss it in more detail as this is not the place. Thank you for sharing.

In Jesus Name,

Gary

The word "absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" are never so real as when looking at someone who was a Christian, loved the Lord, lived for Him and has "passed away" and all you see is a hollow shell and you "know with your knower" that you are looking at an empty shell of a body. The person you knew is not there but enjoying the glories of heaven in the presence of the Lord and His angels.

The moment that person "passed into the presence of the Master" the one who you knew was no longer here on earth, only the empty "house" that he/she inhabited. Praise God!

Thank you Littlelamb for that great article. I have done a bit of study myself in this area and have generally come to believe just the way you nicely presented it. I think the only hard part for me to understand, though you could be right on target, as when Jesus preached to the disobedient in hades. Was He allowing those who believed to have another chance? That would seem to be oppiite from certain other passages, and just as you stated, you question the NDE that have popped up in the thousands. Probably many more.

I do wonder, however, if there is truth to at least a portion of these, which very well could be, could it also be some in Hades were given another chance? I mean, why would He preach to them. Preaching seems to imply a choice to believe, at least from my own understanding. There is no other scripture I know of, however, that seems to support that idea. Just one of those question verses that always gets caught in my mind. LOL

Great layout, and I believe you are right on th target with the word of God.

God bless

It can be but only one way -

Hebrews 9:27

King James Version (KJV)

27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

There are no second chances for man once he dies. Jesus went to hell to show the chained fallen angels and demons that the one they had followed, Lucifer, had lost and that He, Jesus had victory over them and death. He was victorious over them all.

Perhaps, little Lamb, I can accept your meaning of Jesus and His preaching to the disobedient, and perhaps there could be many possibilities with that one, and so I do not really have much else to stand on concerning scripture accept a different meaning than the first thoughts in my head. However, I would differ from you concerning NDE as a little research has shown millions of people have had these. Many many Christians as well.

Do we take them at their word? What about all of the people in the bible that was brought back to life? Did they not die a second time? What about those who rose from the dead when Jesus died?

I am not saying that all NDE are real, nor am I saying most of us will ever get a second chance, but it does seem that God has this right to determine how He brings certain lost people to Himself. Many people have accepted Jesus Christ because of their NDE. It has been reported that these people (many of them anyway) see things going on around them that no science can explain. They see everything and remember much of it. I cannot usually even remember a dream I might have. lol

I guess, all I am saying, as I cannot with a clear heart and mindset, just rule out all NDE just because they do not all support the bible. I do believe in some cases Satan is involved, as he can and does appear as an angle of light. I also believe that some are made up or that there may be a medical reason in some cases that may not be a true NDE. Saying all of this though, it appears even Paul had a near death experience, and so how can we as Christians just dismiss these just like that, not even believing our own brethen.

I suppose though, that would be a good discussion on another thread. Other than that though, good job on your post and I pretty much agree with the rest of it.

God bless

During His time in Hell, Christ preached to the spirits in prison. (1 Peter 3:18-20).

"For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:' By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water."

Who says that Jesus descended into hell?

The First Peter scripture doesn't say that either.

P.S. The original Apostles Creed say's nothing about Him descending into hell.

Could it be it was talking about his body also being in Hell(hades - grave)

and God was to bring it back before it got corrupted like Lazarus(4 days)

27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Acts 2:27

Since Hell is Hades(grave) in this scripture it seems to mean - dead

His soul was the sacrifice and it died. Isa. 53:10

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
