Heb 13:2  Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

 

i believe what the bible says when it alludes to that specific instance with Abraham and Lot.

 

however, i suspect that perhaps a literal angel is not necessarily always the case.

another word for angel is messenger, and the Lord sometimes places people in our path that test our character with a request, a message, or even a blessing.

 

but "entertaining a stranger" is an act of faith through love, whether they be an angel manifesting in human form, or 'just' a human.

 

Mat 25:31  When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: 

Mat 25:32  And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

Mat 25:46  And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
