Luke 12:48

What are your thoughts on this verse?

 

 

Luke 12:48  But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

As far as what it's saying, that has bothered me for some time.....   it seems to be saying that we will be punished for the things we don't do, and if we just go along with the downfallen world partying and being immoral, he will throw us in the fire with the unbelievers....    If we are believers and not doing what we know we should be doing we will get a good beating for it and those who didn't do those things because they didn't know about them will get beat a little....

 

I only know of one thing he told me to do that just couldn't do.  I tried so many times but it would have really hurt a relationship....   the relationship went away anyway and I lost my chance to help that person.....   it cost me a close relationship with the Lord for 7 years when I told him I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

I understand that we are held responsible for what we have.If we are blessed with talents,wealth,knowledge and time we are expected to use these to glorify God..Not only the wealthy have been given much but we all have been given much.We need to pray to God on how to use these resources we have been given.It is responsible stewardship.

Human life was designed from the beginning to be about good stewardship.  Adam was given stewardship of Eden, and forfeited that.  Now, through Christ, the saints will also receive stewardship for eternity, and it could involve the whole universe, for all we know.  We are not told, but it is a reasonable conclusion.

 

Every child of God is a steward, and every steward will give account. The more that one is given, the greater is the responsibility, and the greater will be the accountability. 

 

But after a steward has been judged faithful, he or she will once again be given a wider sphere of stewardship in eternity.  Too many Christians do not think about this, and believe that they will simply be idle in Heaven.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  This life is a preparation for the life to come.

I don't think we are to read that literally as receiving actual beating. What it appears to be saying is that a person who has been taught right from wrong will be judged more harshly than a person who was not taught. In other words those with greater knowledge have greater expectations. Same as teachers will be judged more harshly because of their position of influence.

Yes,those who are teachers of God's word and cause a person to stumble and fall in their belief and faith will be judged more harshly.

I know in some similar scriptures, I was getting out of them saying what we know we are responsible now responsible for as far as behavior and knowing the jobs He wants us to do. As far as the stripes, I wondered, what, not to be too graphic, but, well, does that mean less flames or a kinder place down under?

Because of Revelation 20:12-15  And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God,[a] and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. I can interpret that their will be degrees of punishment of those who go to hell.It will all be very,very bad but I can not see the sweet little grandma who was kind but did not believe in Jesus getting the same punishment as Hitler.Just as there are degrees of rewards in heaven.Our God has a tremendous amount of grace and mercy.
