Since our "self" is sinful by nature, and without Christ, self righteousness is an oxymoron, as I see it.  Self righteousness is not mentioned in the bible directly, but the opposite is stressed.

Colossians 3:12-17

Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Meekness is also encouraged as a goal.  Both humility and meekness are the opposite of self righteousness.

I agree OneLight.Actually it is related to legalism. That we can generate ourselves a righteousness that will be accepted to God.Jesus and the Apostle Paul came down on those who attempted to live a life in self-righteousness.Especially the Pharisees.

But to him to does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted to him for righteousness. Romans 4:5 NKJV

Romans 10:1-4 NKJV Brethern, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved.

For I bear the witness that THEY HAVE A ZEAL FOR GOD, BUT NOT ACCORDING TO KNOWLEDGE. FOR THEY BEING IGNORANT OF GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND SEEKING TO ESTABLISH THEIR OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS, HAVE NOT SUBMITTED TO THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

That means that the imputed righteousness of Christ has put an end to our being righteous through keeping the law. God has declared us righteous when we make Jesus our Lord and Savior. That is His last word and we can't trump it. There is nothing we can do to improve on it. We are set free to serve God by walking in the Spirit. No longer do we have to try to be good enough to go to heaven.

Those who try to improve on what God has done may be trying to establish their own righteousness. This is usually done with a great deal of zeal. It can create a spiritual pride in one's own goodness. Christians who do this are tempted to compare themselves with others rather than with Christ. They may be tempted to look down on those who have not achieved the same goodness they suppose they possess, not being aware of their own failings.

Some believe that they are saved by faith AND works, which is contrary to Scripture. For by GRACE you are saved through FAITH, and that not of yourselves. It is a GIFT of God, NOT OF WORKS, lest anyone should boast. Eph. 2:8-9 NKJV It goes on to say that we were created for good works that were prepared for us beforehand that we should walk in them. We do this out of a grateful heart for what Christ has done for us, and by following the Holy Spirit, not in an effort to be saved. Moreover, those who have been forgiven much love much. When we are totally set free from keeping the law and embrace all Christ has done for us, we are flooded with thanksgiving and love for God.

Grace is not a license to sin. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life he lives He lives to God. Likewise you also reckon yourselves to be dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:10-15

Isaiah 64:6

We are all infected and impure with sin.
When we display our righteous deeds,
they are nothing but filthy rags.
Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall,
and our sins sweep us away like the wind.

[NIV] Romans 11:17-21

17 If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root,

18 do not boast over those branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.

19 You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in."

20 Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid.

21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.

Self-righteousness is like a halo that has turned into a noose to hang yourself on.

What do you think the Bible says about self righteous? Romans 3:10  Is it good to be self righteous?

Since we are to be as perfect as God the Father, self-righteousness is of no value.  We need imputed righteousness.  Indeed we need God the Son to be our righteousness.

Self righteous is similar to pride, pride keeps people from humbling themselves so that they can come to faith in Christ.

i really don't understand the question. you ask in light of romans 3:10 is it good to be self righteous. but romans 3:10 CLEARLY states that none of us are righteous. doesn't that answer the question? the only one who is righteous is God Himself.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
