If you are asking me personally why I do not agree with you on Leviticus 19:28. The reason is that I think the way the verse is being used here is out of contexts to its meaning. Markings on the skin back in Leviticus day were considers a pagan practice. Done by people whom I assume were pagans.  From what I can tell from the verse, they must of marked their skin for the dead. What is really being forbidden here is  pagan religious customs,including pagan mourning rites. (cuts in your body for the dead) The practice of cutting the face and arms and legs, in time of bereavement was a religion practice done by pagans. The “tattoo” marks described in Leviticus were clearly related to false religious practices. Today a tattoo is a decorative means of self expression and personal decoration. It has nothing to do with religion unless you want it too. So what God is forbidding in Leviticus 19:28. is the customs of the pagan religion. Since tattoos and ear rings today have nothing to do with pagan religion or  linking a person to a religion, I see no harm in them.

Now I am sure you are going to disagree with everything I said here and are going to accuse me of justifying sin and all of that. To that I say this. I am not justifying sin. Because I don't see tattoos as sin. What I am doing is looking at Leviticus 19:28, and with my own understanding; look at it for what I personally believe it to mean. So there you have it. Me answering your question as to why I am disagreeing with you. I hope I have answered in a respectful way.

You are right, tattooing was practiced in various nations form earliest times, as well as marking of all kinds with paint and cuttings of the flesh. These were connected with superstition and any disfiguration of the body was an outrage to God and an insult to Him who designed our body originally, hence the law here, in V. 28. I also agree with you that "Today a tattoo is a decorative means of self expression and personal decoration."

Also, In Deut. 14:1 we read, V. 1, "We are the children of the LORD your God: ye shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes for the dead."

Many peoples were very violent both I mourning and worship of idols, tearing the hair, scratching and cutting the flesh

I look at it this way, because any disfiguration of the body was an outrage to God and an insult to Him who designed our body originally, hence the law here, in V. 28, Jesus who always  does the will of His Father is like His Father, and Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever," as His Father is, (Heb. 13:8.)

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever., as His Father is, that Is why I personally don't agree with it at all. I apologise if I have offended you in anyway.

Love, Your Brother Joe

We here down under remember them Joe. Remembrance Day

This year, November marks the 98th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11 am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

I remember one year, at pre-shift muster, we reminded our entire crew at the start of our shift, all men from pit top to the coal face to again, as we have done for years, to stop work for one minute to observe  ONE MINUTES SILENCE, in memory of those who died and suffered in all wars armed conflicts. All men as always were in agreement.

The new mine manager, a young American university educated know it all, who really knew nothing much about Australian coal miners and returned soldiers, all he was interested in was production at all costs, over hearing this stated; "I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU GUYS, ANYONE WHO STOPS WORK AT 11AM WILL BE IMMEDIATELY SACKED ON THE SPOT."

We turned and said to him, "Well we might just go out the gate now, (6,30am), head off to town to the war memorial, wait till 11am, observe our minutes silence there, and after this we will probably vote go home for the rest of the day. See you tomorrow, if your lucky!

He stuttered, stammered, turned a nice shade of red, lit up a smoke inhaled deeply, coughed, went into his office, and his underling came out and said, Manager ok's the one minutes stop work.!

He was the same manager who pulled down the Australian flag, and raised the Japanese flag on our flag pole at work one morning. When we asked what was the idea of this?  His reply was, "I have a few Japanese buyers arriving this morning to tour the mine."

We advised him, this is Australia, Australian soil, Australian coal, Australian working miners, and for him to promptly raise our flag or he will be showing, his Japanese buyers, and  touring a non-operating empty mine, devoid of all human activity. If the Japanese want to buy our coal that's ok, but their not buying us! It never took him long to learn.

We will remember them.

Well I addressed Leviticus 19:28. sine that was the verse that was being brought up the most when talking about tattoos. As for disfiguring the body, I think people who are getting tattoos don't see it as disfiguring. They see it as added beauty to themselves. All in the eye of the beholder I guess. But anyway the same argument about disfiguring could be used against pierced ears. But  people with  pierced ears don't get judged as much as people with  tattoos do. This is a good discussion. I like it.

There's over a thousand very common wilful sins committed by men and women and children daily.

Pierced ears or piercings might get less notice than tats

  because of public perspective, or even private perspective, regardless of what is right.

Wow I totally forgot about this thread. 13 Pages later...

Further, this has been a topic of discussion with my wife lately. I think of these 6 M's when thinking about or discussing with people about getting tattoo's:

Modification - the Bible doesn't explicitly forbid tattoos. Some people do this to look more like animals which I find very strange. Our bodies are God's temple (see 1 Cor. 6:19-20)

Motive - why are you wanting or do you have a tattoo? Our primary goal should be to glorify God (See 1 Cor. 10:31)

Message - what are you trying to say with your tattoo? Also keep in mind they are nearly permanent and will be with you for the remainder of your life.

Marketability - will employers offer you employment based on where you have or want to get a tattoo? Could have ink hurt your chances for gainful employment and promotions?

Maybe according to Salary.com:

The biggest takeaways from our survey include a whopping 76% of respondents feel tattoos and piercings hurt an applicant’s chances of being hired during a job interview. And more than one-third – 39% of those surveyed – believe employees with tattoos and piercings reflect poorly on their employers. Furthermore, 42% feel visible tattoos are always inappropriate at work, with 55% reporting the same thing about body piercings.

Fortunately, only 4% of those with tattoos and piercings report having faced actual discrimination because of their ink and body art.

Money - how much will your tattoo cost or are you putting this on a credit card? Do you have enough to cover your bills? A typical tattoo in the USA costs between $80 to $100 an hour. Few shops work for less than $40 an hour. We are to be good stewards of what God has entrusted to us.

Medical concerns - There have been studies including those done by Mayo Clinic that side effects of tattoos can include allergic reactions, skin infections, other infections, contracting blood borne diseases, and on rare occasions complications with MRI scans.

As in all things, we should pray for God to give us wisdom (See James 1:5) and we should attempt to give others grace. Both those who frown on tattoos and those who promote them. Is it a salvation issue? No. Is it an essential doctrine to the faith? No. It's a non-essential not a non-negotiable. I have many friends on both side of the fence on this issue.

I personally do not find them attractive.

As Millennial's and Generation X become managers in the workplace perhaps the stigma about tattoos will change in the workplace. I imagine the same thing will happen as the shift in leadership in Church is affected by generational shifts as well. I think where you live also is a big factor.

Now off to read all your comments. :)

God bless,
GE

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 has absolutely nothing to do with the human body.  Paul is talking in that entire chapter about the church, not the physical human form.

"Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are."

Read the whole chapter.  Paul is teaching in 1 Corinthians 3 about the church and corruption IN the church and the destruction of the church from the inside.  He even tells them in chapter 1, if I recall correctly, that things are condoned by that church that even lost Gentiles won't do.

He is reminding them that they as Christ's Church are also the Temple of God. He's very serious that those who purposefully or neglectfully seek to destroy the church from within - God will destroy them. And that's what these people were doing with their sexual immorality, divisiveness, chaos in the worship service, making a mockery of the Lord's Supper, and even "preacher" worship.

This church was in a hot mess.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Paul DOES speak to the individual about being the Temple of the Holy Spirit in that same letter to the Church at Corinth. Here is what he says to the individual.
1 Corinthians 6:18-20 = "Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body."
  • 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 = This is a warning to those would see the church destroyed.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 = This is directions and admonishment given to the individual Christian against sexual immorality which was accepted by that particular church.
Neither of these passages have anything to do with tattoos.
I would agree with you there! :thumbsup:
Neither of the passages have anything to do with tattoos. I'm glad someone brought this up. So many times these passages are stripped of their context.
God bless,
GE
    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.
      Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.
      This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.
      You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.
      Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”
    • Understanding the Enemy!
      I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!
      For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.
      2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
      So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,
      Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
      Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.
      Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!
    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,
      As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.
      Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
      Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."
      So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
