So how should a married couple handle their financial situations?

1. Should they have a joint account and everything they earn go into the same account?

2. Should they have separate accounts and what is his is his and what is hers is hers?

3. Who should pay the bills?

4. What if you have a spender and the other more frugal?

On of the biggest problems in a marriage is money.

I personally believe that number 1 is the correct answer, that is how we have done it for two plus decades.  There is no "her money" and "his money", there is only "our money".   I have never known a married couple that were equal in their spending habits, one always seems to be more frugal than the other.   In our marriage, I am the spender and the wife is the more frugal one.   We have an agreement that neither will spend more than $500 without speaking to the other one first.  When we were first married this number was $50, but has changed as our financial situation has changed.

Its not really a one size fits all kind of thing.

When we got married oh so long ago, my hubby had been in a church that was ultra legalistic and convinced him that women cant handle money at all. That we are too stupid to grasp things like budgets. That caused a problem early on. I was 31 when we got married and had been living on my own. I had no credit card debt and worked 40 hrs a week while in college. I knew how to handle money. We have joint checking and savings accounts. Whatever other accounts we had from our pre marriage days have remained separate mainly due to laziness lol. We discuss money before big purchases for the most part, altho it can be after the fact too if I suddenly need to get an expensive car repair and cant call him (as an example).

This one really bothers me. If you are joined as one, how can you have separate accounts?

There were issues in the beginning but you were able to work it out. This can be a huge issue for some couples. Before marriage this is the number one issue that should be discussed. If not there could be serious problems through out the marriage.

Its important but I dont think its the number one issue. I think our spiritual state is the number one issue.

OH!!!! There are many men or women who insist what is their money will stay their money. You would be surprised. There are also couples who will not get married unless there is a prenuptial agreement signed with an attorney. And the number one item on this agreement is usually .....MONEY!!!!

Well that is the way the Christian marriage should be but for many, and that includes people who claim they are a Christian, that is not the case.

I had my own account plus our joint account.  However Steve also had access to my account.  It was understood that it all was ours.

My friends new husband is an ogre.   He controls all the money even though Martha's SS check goes into the account along with Hals.  She is only allowed $25 a month and must account for every penny of that.  When they go grocery she is not allowed to buy anything he doesn't eat. Their tastes are totally different.  He wants tons of sugar even though he is diabetic.  She on the other hand is struggling to loose weight.  She shattered her ankle two years ago and has a lot of hardware in that ankle.  Her weight is high (she is only 5 feet tall)  and I have warned her that if she is not careful that ankle could shatter again.  He doesn't seem to care.  He just doesn't get it.

She does nothing about it because she doesn't want him to leave her.  I feel sorry for her.

I never had to account for what I spend and neither did Steve, as I said it was an understanding it was OUR money not one or the others.  We were true partners in everything.  I miss him.

Blessings, RustyAngeL

It fosters the idea of separateness instead of oneness within the marriage.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this study, I'll be focusing on Daniel and his picture of the resurrection and its connection with Yeshua (Jesus).

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
