From a financial standpoint it is not a dumb as people think.  Many studies/articles I have read on the subject put the cost of such a thing under the cost of our current "safety net programs" and it removes 100% of the fraud involved in those programs.

This isn't really a new idea.

Years ago, I remember the radio commentator Paul Harvey proposing something similar.  Given the billions of dollars that are spent on implementing social welfare programs and the overhead and waste (the huge bureaucracy, for example), it would just be cheaper and more efficient to issue government checks to those in need.

So from a financial standpoint it isn't really that wacky.

The moral standpoint though is different.  The whole "give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach him to fish, feed him for life" thing.

I'm not really sure what is going on in the state of Hawaii  to comment on rather this is a good plane of not.  I do recall about 10 or maybe it was 15 years ago when the gov. gave out checks to boost the economy. Everyone I knew who got one used it to pay off bills and property taxes they owed.

Yes, it is a dumb idea.  It is basically socialism.  What we need is a larger tax base, not simply legislating people to live off of the corporate dime.

We need to get people OFF of the government dole and out there working and paying taxes and putting into the economy.   This thing that Hawaii is doing will only be a drag on the economy. 

Money you earn, is money you are more likely to spend prudently and judiciously, generally speaking.   Most people spend their money differently when they have to earn it, than if it is just given to them.
