God gave 613 commandments, not just 10.  

And there are sacrifices associated with the Sabbath day.   Are you performing those animal sacrifices in obedience to God's commandments?

Greetings all.

I noticed that there was a discussion on a False Doctrine thread regarding Saturday vs Sunday Sabbath and I thought it would be good to start another thread on the subject.

I hope to try to explain how Jesus did rise on a Sunday, the first churches celebrated Sunday, not just after Constantine made Sunday our Sabbath day as some claim.

I also hope to explain here how though the Saturday Sabbath has NOT changed Sunday was biblically ordained for the Christian church.

First of all I would like to explain the logical impossibility for Christ to rise on a Saturday. The bible is clear that Jesus was executed on the Friday before, dying at the ninth hour, about 3 pm.

The Jews asked to take the body right away as they could not leave a body to decay on the Sabbath. They did so, they buried Him and the rested on the Sabbath day.

So there you have Jesus dying on Friday, the first day, then the Sabbath, Friday sundown to Saturday Sundown. Some here believe that Jesus rose right at the end of the Sabbath, or within a few hours, meaning still Saturday, Some believe that just because the women went to the tomb on a Sunday morning that doesn’t have to mean He rose Sunday morning. But that would negate the Scripture that says that He rose on the THIRD DAY.

Mark 16:9

Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

Its easy enough to prove too that the first churches celebrated Sunday.

 

Revelation 1:10

I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,….

That is NOT Saturday but Sunday.

1 Corinthians 16:2

Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

 

Acts 20:7 |

And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.

This did not happen overnight Saturday!!

The worship of the cross of fire on Good Friday explains at once the anomaly otherwise so perplexing that Christ should be buried on a Thursday, and rise from the dead on Saturday. If the Festival of Holy Week be really, as its rites declare, one of the old festivals of Saturn, the Babylonian fire god, who, though and infernal god, …….it is altogether natural that the god of the Papal idolatry, though called by Christ’s name should rise from the dead on his own day, ……”Saturn’s Day”.

 

I read some really good old commentaries, (I have found the older the better because they are often less likely to be corrupted) and there is a book by Charles Henry Mackintosh, NOTES ON THE BOOK OF GENESIS  that explains beautifully that difference between the Saturday and Sunday Sabbath

 

The seventh day stands connected with earth and earthly rest: the first day of the week, on the contrary, introduces us to heaven and heavenly rest.

This makes a vast difference in the principle: and when we look at the matter in a practical point of view, the difference in most material. If I celebrate the seventh day, it marks me as an earthly man, inasmuch as that day is, clearly, the rest of the earth- creation rest; but if I am taught by the Word and Spirit of God to understand the meaning of the first day of the week, I shall at once apprehend its immediate connection with that new and heavenly order of things, of which the death and resurrection of Christ form the everlasting foundation. The seventh day appertained to Israel and to earth. The first day of the week appertains to the church and to heaven. Further, Israel was commanded to observe the Sabbath day; the Church is privileged to enjoy the first day of the week. The former was the test of Israel’s moral condition; the latter is the significant proof of the Church’s eternal acceptance. That made manifest what Israel could do for God; this perfectly declares what God has done for us.

Being the day on which Christ rose from the dead, it sets forth not the completion of creation, but the full and glorious triumph of redemption. Nor should we regard the celebration  of the first day of the week as a matter of bondage…..Hence we find that the first day of the week was preeminently the day on which Christians came together to break bread; and at that period of the Church’s history, the distinction between the Sabbath and the first day of the week was fully maintained.

So it is clear here. The Saturday Sabbath has not changed but God has ordained Sunday for the church

I have found little evidence Christians ever willingly (except for our generations) changed the resurrection day to sunday or the sabbath day to sunday either. Other than the most massive list of material that points to a very subtle yet pervasive conglomeration of 'Roman sentiment' and 'Roman cause' that made sunday (the SUN day of 25th December) the perpetual day of 'rest' as opposed to the seventh day - the Sabbath.

Q. When did the Sabbath begin to be kept?

Q. Why was the Jewish Sabbath changed into the Sunday?
A. Because Christ was born upon a Sunday, arose from the dead upon a Sunday, and sent down the Holy Ghost on a Sunday—works not inferior to the creation of the world.

Q. By whom was it changed?
A. By the Governors of the Church, the Apostles, who also kept it; for St. John was in spirit on the Lord’s day (which was Sunday)—Apoc. i. 10.

Q. How prove you that the Church hath power to command feasts and holydays?
A. By the very act of changing the Sabbath into Sunday, which Protestants allow of; and therefore they fondly contradict themselves, by keeping Sunday strictly, and breaking most other feasts commanded by the same Church.

Q. How do you prove that?
A. Because by keeping Sunday, they acknowledge the Church's power to ordain feasts, and to command them under sin; and by not keeping the rest by her commanded, they again deny, in fact, the same power.

Sabbath keepers denounced as Antichrist

[p. 92] Gregory, servant of the servants of God, to his most beloved sons the Roman citizens. It has come to my ears that certain men of perverse spirit have sown among you some things that are wrong and opposed to the holy faith, so as to forbid any work being done on the Sabbath day. What else can I call these but preachers of Antichrist, who, when he comes, will cause the Sabbath day as well as the Lord’s day to be kept free from all work. For, because he pretends to die and rise again, he wishes the Lord’s day to be had in reverence; and, because he compels the people to judaize that he may bring back the outward rite of the law, and subject the perfidy of the Jews to himself, he wishes the Sabbath to be observed.

If as many suppose, Christians as a whole observed Sunday in place of the "Jewish" Sabbath from resurrection Sunday forward, then why was it necessary for the church to enact ecclesiastical laws to enforce Sunday worship as a day of rest? Simply put, the issue to the Catholic Church has always been one of authority, authority to declare binding holy festival days. It is a mark of their authority to institute such days, even appropriating previously pagan days and declaring them obligatory, and that one commits a sin if you do not attend services on those days. The Bible is quite silent on Sunday sacredness, so the "Bible Only" Protestants contradict themselves by observing it as a replacement for the Sabbath.

Here is a statement from Dr. Gilbert Murray, M.A., D.Litt., LLD, FBA, Professor of Greek at Oxford University, who certainly had no ax to grind concerning Christian thought on the Sabbath question. He wrote: “Now since Mithras was the sun, the Unconquered, and the sun was the Royal Star, the religion looked for a king whom it could serve as a representative of Mithras upon earth. The Roman Emperor seemed to be clearly indicated as the true king. In sharp contrast to Christianity, Mithraism recognized Caesar as the bearer of divine grace. It had so much acceptance that it was able to impose on the Christian world its own sun-day in place of the Sabbath; its sun’s birthday, the 25th of December, as the birthday of Jesus.” History of Christianity in the Light of Modern Knowledge.

Looking a bit further into historical statements, Dr. William Frederick says: “The Gentiles were an idolatrous people who worshipped the sun, and Sunday was their most sacred day. Now in order to reach the people in this new field, it seems but natural as well as necessary to make Sunday the rest day of the church. At this time it was necessary for the church to either adopt the Gentile’s day or else have the Gentiles change their day. To change the Gentiles day would have been an offense and stumbling block to them. The church could naturally reach them better by keeping their day.” There it is, friends, a clear explanation by Dr. Frederick as to how this change happened. Another statement very parallel to this one is found in the North British Review.

But let’s move on to a statement from the Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. 4, p. 153. “The church after changing the day of rest from the Jewish Sabbath or seventh-day of the week to the first, made the third commandment refer to Sunday as the day to be kept holy as the Lord’s day.”
