To understand God one must understand His Existence is without begin thus He is reliant upon only Himself to be... I AM that I AM. Because we are with begin we cannot fathom but only by faith accept-> that is why the necessary 'IS' faith ... only The Lord in His Father, Son and Spirit have this experientially. As far as darkness it has creation

Isaiah 45:7 (ESV)

[7] I form light and create darkness;

I make well-being and create calamity;

I am the LORD, who does all these things.
 

Because we know these things to be true by The Word of God... we also can know He doesn't plan on keeping the darkness He has created in the eternity

Revelation 22:5 (KJV)

[5] And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
