Forgiveness???

I guess i have a question. 

How do we forgive someone..for a betrayal of sorts?

It's very hurtful to be betrayed.  But since the Lord teaches us to forgive, we just need to decide in our minds and hearts that we do forgive the person.

If we don't forgive, it will only hurt us on our insides, that is, in our hearts.

It is a good question. It is an act of faith to forgive. But to forget, that is an entirely different matter.

That is why so many just cannot get their head around the idea that God forgives AND forgets. He is able to do the 'putting away' of sin in an awesome manner. It just never 'crops up' in His mind when He has forgiven and forgotten. So all we can do is act in faith and trust in Him. Unfortunately, we are then later beset by the Accuser who wants to remind us over and over again. So really, forgiveness is a spiritual issue. It is a battle in our minds. Again, faith is the only way that this mountain can be removed.

It is easier when we know that we are handing that person over to God for judgement.. If we have faith in God then we can be assured that God will deal with the issue justly.. So we can take the weight off our own shoulders and forgive the other person.. The ball then is in their court as to if they repent of their wrong doing towards us..

Forgiving does not mean that we should remain open to any future wrong doing by the other person.. Just because we have forgiven a person does not mean that person will suddenly become a nice person and never do the wrong doing again..  So forgive and then be wary and try to remove yourself from being vulnerable to that person.. Now if you believe the person has made a genuine apology to you and is trying their best to be a better person then you can bring down your defenses somewhat.. 

Ultimately eternal forgiveness is granted by God if one believes Jesus and trusts in the atonement He secured on the cross for our forgiveness and justification..  So in the end the offender must accept Jesus to have their transgression forgiven in Eternity..

A person who, by God's Word, has a broken and contrite heart walking in the s/Spirit is the only one who can...

Jesus longs to hold each one of us in a personal face-to-face encounter. When we behold His face, we are enabled and motivated in love and compassion to become His hands reaching out to a hurting world. The secret place of Christ, the Bridegroom King, is where His inner gaze captivates our hearts and makes us lovesick, causing us to overflow from His love. Face-to-face is a place where we are enabled to trust God fully and to rely completely on His love.
We need to know that there are times we will have to wage war with the name and Blood of Jesus to break out of our box of imposed limitations (ie. the act of unforgiveness). But there is a way out. The gateway is the finished work of the Cross of our lovely Lord Jesus!  He forgave us so we could forgive others

We cannot forgive in our own strength.  If we are born again and belong to Him His Spirit lives in us.  And He can do God's will in and through us when we can't find it in our own self to forgive.  We choose to forgive, even when we don't want to and don't feel like it.  Forgiving is an act of dying to self and obeying God.  Christ in us loves the unlovable and forgives the unforgivable.  

As said, that doesn't mean we have to be stupid and set ourselves up to be hurt again.  Even Paul warned the disciples about a guy who had done him much harm.
