For those who do condone reading Harry Potter books, would you also read Lady Chatterly's diaries, or watch the movies based on the books?

Or do you read playboy or hustler magazines? Or watch Playboy channel, or spice channel?

Afterall, they're only magazines.... Its only a tv show

I read the article.

I think it makes some good points particularly about the use of fantasy and symbols within Christian thinking.

But for me the problem with the Potter series may not be the actual series, or the content per-se. But the environment which we currently live in the West and how those books may feed into that environment in ways that were unthinkable twenty or thirty years ago I think is the problem when the book is read by children.

I think for example that if you told someone in the 50's that there would be an active and serious movement of people in the US who called themselves wizards and witches and that they took this practice seriously and promoted this as an earth based religion and "good", they would think you were nuts. I live in a small community, yet I know several people who take Wicca as a serious faith and practice it.

To the degree that Potter feeds that movement by indoctrinating kids to the idea that Wizards are okay and a good thing this is the problem, not the use of wizards or fantasy in the Potter books per-se. When witches were just a Halloween joke and good fun well that was fine, but today we have real witches who want to be accepted as good along with their use of the occult.

I also "know of what I speak" when I say that not everyone is the same, and that there ARE good messages in the books.

I wonder if the world is looking for the "good messages" in these books/movies.

*frustrated sigh* So, has anyone actually READ the article? Anyone? I would like to request that you don't post in this discussion unless you've read it...obviously, I can't force that...but please do me that as a favour. I made this thread for the ARTICLE, not so that we could regurgitate the same old arguments.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yes I read the article and I still have the same old agrument, because that same old argument is still valid....

My first contention with this would be the title of the book

"Looking for G-d in Harry Potter"

Firstly, why go to an ungodly source to find the true G-d?

I don't buy this either:

Books that are rich in symbolism necessarily support a Christian worldview.

Am I understanding correctly that this author is comparing Harry Potter to Jesus Christ!

Does the blasphemy ever end?

And Christ is the unicorn who has been slain and had his blood lapped up by a snake???? That right there to me shows the satanic origin of these books.

everything remains the same, just packaged differently, todays world is more knowledgable so the enemy has to update the packaging, before it was limited to cultures and handed down legends, or pantheons of gods for all kinds of thing, and these in the first centuries were renamed for acceptability, but now this is known by many so now the line becomes more blurred, that secret things such as these animals are hidden once again to make palatable to the more informed but still gullible mankind that he faced in the garden so long ago. :b:

It is so mixing the true heavenly with the corruption of the earthly done by the enemy.

I admit, I didn't read the entire article...but I do have a comment. Maybe this author is trying to take something relevant to our culture and use it to reach ppl for Christ. Regardless of how you feel about the Harry Potter series, it's obvious that they have strongly influenced our culture. Why not use this to point ppl back to Christ? Even Joseph understood this principle in Genesis 50:20. What satan intends for evil, God can still use for good. :emot-hug:

While I would agree with you Tess, I would say that I don't believe this is the way God would have it...it wouldn't be His perfect plan. So...just because He can use the evil for good doesn't make it right. :emot-hug:

Harry Potter isn't as evil as the spirit behind him. :emot-hug:

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
