no The Bible clearly states they were to wait for the Holy Spirit before starting ministry

Acts 1:4-5

4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

Never asked about ministry?

John 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

They received the Spirit before but they did not receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit until after.

My understanding is that Jesus received from john the Baptist, he then baptized the 12 and they operated under His authority, at the Crucifixion they no longer operated under His authority fulfilling the Isaiah prophecy, " I will strike the Shepard and the sheep will scatter".  After Pentecost they then had the strength and power that they would go to they're death before they would deny Him.

John 20:19-22

Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”  When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you!  As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”  And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit."

Marksmith asked:

Quote

Did the apostles receive the Holy Spirit before pentecost?

It depends upon which aspect of the Holy Spirit you are referring to. The 11 received the indwelling Spirit after the resurrection here:

John 20:22  And when Jesus had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

It was at this moment that the 11 were saved, the Holy Spirit being the instrument by which we are saved after the application of the blood of Christ to a person's life. They received the indwelling Spirit here, but did not receive the baptism in the Spirit until Pentecost.

Certain of the Reformed persuasion deny this because they claim that all people are automatically baptized in the Spirit when they are saved, but this is not what Scripture teaches. This false doctrine came about in the early 1600's when it came to the forefront that none of those who attended calvinist churches ever received the baptism in the Spirit as Scripture teaches, with the initial outward sign of speaking in tongues.

Calvinist's took this as an insult and came up with the doctrine that all believers at the moment of salvation receive the baptism of the Spirit. However, since not all people who reportedly get saved speak in tongues when they get saved, and since Scripture is emphatic that those baptized with the Spirit do speak in tongues (even though they may never speak in tongues ever again in their Christian walk), the charade can be easily spotted by anyone who is not a bias defender.

Hope that helps.

Blessings!

Interestingly Jesus sent out 70 disciples who cast out demons and performed low level miracles. They did not have the Holy Spirit to my knowledge. The Holy Spirit changes lifestyle and mentality. It changes spiritual focus and puts it all to the importance of Christ. Without the Holy Spirit we can do certain things, but who we are is defined on nature, spiritual nature, to have the Holy Spirit is to be like God in persona, and characteristic identity.
