It may surprise people to know that the political map is really more diamond shaped than simply left-to-right or some place on a line.  In fact, the truth is that that your beliefs in freedom actually determine your political leanings.

In the political map above, you can see the basic layout of the parties and you can see two types of freedom:  Personal and Economic

The most freedom minded on the map are the Libertarians, as they support both types of freedoms, personal and economic.  They actually have liberty in their name, which is another word for freedom.  

The least freedom minded are the Statists who are typically authoritarians, dictators, socialists, and communists and appear on the bottom of the map.  They don't like freedom at all.  The more down on the map they lean, the more this is true.

The Centrists are middle of the road, and are also called Moderates.

The Left are left leaning Liberals.  They enjoy Personal Freedoms, but are not too keen about Economic Freedoms.  The more left they lean on the map, the more this is true.

The Right are right leaning Conservatives.  They enjoy Economic Freedoms, but are not too keen about Personal Freedoms. The more right they lean on the map, the more this is true.

Politically speaking, Libertarians are the diametric opposites of Statists, and Liberals are the diametric opposites of Conservatives.   The diametric opposites won't agree on even the smallest political details.

It surprises me that I've come across quite a few US-based Christians who strongly identify with libertarianism. It is an intriguing idea, but ultimately fails in not understanding human behaviour. I do get that there is a gradation in libertarian thought, from the minarchists (probably most libertarians) to the anarcho-capitalists. The latter group are insane.
