Can two devoted people be married in Gods eyes without a legal registered contract? I am in a devoted relationship where we have committed our lives to each other, but circumstances mean that getting legally married is not permitted. If we say our vows before God and a trusted witness would this be enough to constitute a binding marriage in Gods eyes such that we could move in together without living in sin? I believe the legal side is to satisfy human requirements, but that the real essence of marriage is a binding covenant between the couple and God. I would welcome insight into this topic.

Shalom JohnDW,

Welcome to Worthy Christian Forums. Please feel free to browse around and get to know everyone. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.  As soon as you post a few times and after they are approved, it'll tell us that you are "real" person and not a "bot", you'll be free to post throughout our forums and join our chat rooms.  Forgive us for this minor inconvenience, however, we've had issues in the past with Spammers as well as those who wish to post obscene photos and messages!

Currently, if you just began at Worthy, you are in "Newbie" Status.  Simply post a single post, as soon as it's approved, you'll be out of Newbie status and then you'll be able to edit your profile, as well as upload a profile picture.

Let me share a little bit of my vision for the ministry in a parable.

Let's say I'm throwing a big party and am inviting the world to the party (the forums) and I want everyone to have a great time, eating (reading through posts being fed), drinking (being encouraged to walk in His Word), and having fellowship with one another.  In Israel, we have Shabbat meals -- and whenever you have 2 Jews -- you have 3 opinions -- it's GREAT to be opinionated.  I encourage discussions ... but during our Shabbat meals ... we never ever get to the point in disagreements whereby food is being tossed and seriously yelling takes place!  And if someone comes into the meal ... and starts throwing food ... and yells at everyone -- what do you suppose the head of the Shabbat meal will do?  He'll escort those causing problems out of the house!  Why?  Because the whole reason for the gathering was to learn from one another ... to have a great time of fellowship!

Some people like to constantly throw food and yell ... they won't last on Worthy ... because they missed the point of the party ... it's a prequel to the true party -- the Lamb's Supper!

All I'm trying to provide is a place to allow true fellowship ... and discussions in love ... in the hopes it will be a catalyst for true REVIVAL based on REPENTANCE!

I hope you have a blessed time at Worthy!

Please use the REPORT POST feature (which can be found at the top right of all posts) any posts that you believe should be reviewed!  We strive to have ALL members abide by our Terms of Service.

While this message is "automated", please know that if you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a private message, which can be found at the top right to the left of your name.

Your brother in the Lord with much agape love,

George

Hi JohnDW, and welcome,

God made the following procedure when there were no magistrates, justice of the peace, marriage officers and strangely garbed men who claim to be priests.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. (Ge 2:24)

6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. (Mt 19:6)

67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; (Ge 24:67)

Men, for various reasons, usually attached to money, like to regulate the lives of other men. So the State issues various rulings. But for God, the minute you copulate, and stay together, you are "one flesh". If you part company it was fornication, and if you, and/or the other person was already married the act was adultery.

The Lord has required (and blessed) human government. Your State/Nation will have its laws. God asks you to abide by those laws unless they go directly against God's councils.

The case you told of above is marriage in God's eyes unless the reason you can't have a civil wedding is that one or more partners is still married. Your State/Nation might have a minimum age, but if you've had sex your are married in God's eyes.

The question has to be asked and answered.

Why can you not be legally  married according  to the laws of your country?

Those laws are there for a practical  reason, e ample brother and sister cannot marry, as has been said someone who is already legally married cannot marry while that marriage exists.

We here cannot advise  you, you need to talk to a lawyer and to the pastor of the church you attend.

Shalom, JohnDW.

Sure they can ... in God's eyes; however, they cannot receive status as a "married couple" in the State's eyes; therefore, they cannot claim any of the benefits of being married because they don't have a marriage license.

On the other hand, people have been "shacking up" with one another for decades, and if they are committed to each other, they will do fine. But, not being "legally married," they also don't need to be "legally divorced." And, because most people these days are NOT committed to his or her mate, break-ups are common, and if there are any kids involved, the repercussions are horrendous. More than one life is shattered!

Take the time, get the marriage license and contract, and LOCK IT IN! Then, WORK HARD at your marriage and give yourself 100% to your mate! Make the commitment that "Divorce is NOT an option!" And, always treat your mate better than you do yourself! If you remain devoted to your mate, there will be no glimmer of distrust or jealousy!

Notice: I have not used the over-used word "love" in all this. True love is not understood in our culture. True love is not just an emotion; it is the COMMITMENT! One cannot "fall our of love" because one cannot "fall out of commitment!" When one VOWS to God that he or she will be totally committed to his or her mate, that is for LIFE! "Better to not make a vow than to vow and not keep it!" God WILL hold you to your vow! And, one should never take a vow lightly! It is a PROMISE FOREVER! And, we need to have the same value on our vows as God has on them!

We will get legally married. But we are living away from family for at least another year and in a different country so want to wait to make it legal until we’re able to have proper wedding. But we don’t want to live together unless God will bless and recognise our commitment to each other. Nothing sinister. Just circumstance and wanting to be right with God if we live with each other.

Part of the purpose of marriage is to image the relationship between Christ and the church (his bride) to your surrounding community. I would encourage you to consider whether you can accomplish this mandate through living together without being legally married. In what way would you be imaging something different and better than a couple who has no intention to marry and is just living in a sinful relationship?

Two options.

You live in two separate  accommodations until legally  married or

You have a quite marriage locally and live together as husband and wife until on your return home where you have the big family service blessing your marriage.

How is it then not permitted? You can also fly back to your own country to marry if you may not marry there. Only if someone can't move and it's an insane antichristian law that marriage is forbidden in a country I would think it's not sin.

But this sounds like No watch out. So many ppl fell for this lie. Me too. It's just living together in sin. Made me fall from my faith.

I think that would depend on where you are presently living.   Personally, I would not recommend it.   I'd get a small quiet ceremony where you are now and do an all out one when you go home.     Too many things can go wrong
