Fulfillment, or foreshadowing of what would come later? Joel 2

And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

The known world at their time.

First and foremost let me start by saying why I started this thread. There is some that believe that the Holy Spirit gave them the ability to preach or teach (direct communication with each other) in other tongues. I just wanted to see what others thought.

That would require someone with a gift for interpretation of tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:

7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,

9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,

10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

Christians who actually believe in spiritual gifts and put them into practice do not have this confusion but are aware of the sound doctrine given in 1 Corinthians 12 & 14; with chapter 13 on the absolute necessity for charity as the motivation for them.

Yes, they were Jews. It was not yet established that Gentiles would be included.

"The Jew first, and also the Gentile'.

"It served as a clear sign that the message of salvation

Your statement was a bit premature, but eventually correct,

established at the Council in Acts 15.

The narrative confirms the alternative

Except the Greek word can just as easily be understood instead of heard in the context of the sentence.   So they spoke in several languages at the same time, or they spoke and were heard/understood in many different languages.

I did consider that possibility long ago,

this is why I immediately added the previous

verse that the OP omitted:

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit

and began to speak with other tongues,

as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Spirit gave the believers who received the gift

utterance in other tongues-plural. Not 'He gave the

hearers a gift of hearing'. Many mocked at what they heard

and called the saints drunkards.

Only after Peter preached in the common tongue

were those appointed to believe convicted.

Questions that may arise within the context of Acts Chapter 2:

1. How many possibly heard them speaking in Tongues and Peter's sermon that day?

While the Bible provides the specific figure of around three thousand conversions, it does not give an exact number of how many people initially heard Peter's sermon. Historical context indicates that Jerusalem during major feasts like Pentecost would have been bustling with pilgrims, potentially numbering in the tens of thousands. Therefore, it is reasonable to infer that Peter's audience was quite large, encompassing a significant portion of the festival attendees.

2. How can so many different dialects present be heard simultaneously?

From Scripture, it is understood that on the Day of Pentecost, the 120 believers were each enabled by the Holy Spirit to speak in various languages, but not all at once. Rather, each believer spoke in a specific language or dialect as the Spirit gave them utterance. It is conceivable that an individual could speak multiple languages one at a time (I personally have spoken in different languages not just one) , sequentially proclaiming the wonderful works of God in different tongues. However, the biblical account emphasizes the collective impact of all 120 believers speaking in different languages simultaneously, creating a miraculous event where the diverse crowd, gathered in Jerusalem for the festival, could each hear the praises of God in their own native language. This highlights the power and coordination of the Holy Spirit, ensuring that the message reached everyone present, despite the multitude of languages spoken. This event demonstrated the inclusivity of the Gospel and God's ability to transcend human linguistic barriers.

3. What is the significance of the phrase "every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born"?

This phrase highlights the miraculous nature of the event, showing that the Holy Spirit enabled the believers to speak in languages they had not learned, allowing each listener to hear God's praises in their native language.

4. Were the 120 believers aware that they were speaking in different languages?

It is likely that the believers were aware they were speaking in different languages, as this was a direct result of the Holy Spirit's empowerment, though they might not have fully understood the specific languages they were speaking.

"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.  Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.  They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them."

"These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers"

There were more then 120 and all were filled with the sweet sweet holy Spirit. He said "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues". Them..  does make one wonder do some really believe or not. It happens around me and others I know that believe in trust in Jesus Christ who came in the flesh.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
