Saying "Don't try not to sin" might seem like a ridiculous and highly unreasonable statement to some, but if there's one thing I know - we cannot overcome sin.  Only Christ did this.  Trying to do this apart from Him is pointless and futile.  The One that overcame sin lives in us, to enable us to overcome, but of ourselves . . . not gonna happen.

We might think of verses that tell us to resist sin, but it's all in how we do that.  Again, of ourselves, we can't - and besides, any resistance we might muster up for a time, does nothing to transform us.  Again, it's all of Him!  The devotional below points out how affection for Christ produces an automatic expulsive power in us, to overcome sin in our lives!

The expulsive power of a new affection

"Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us." Romans 5:5

When we see Christ as all in all, He then becomes not only our relationship with all things, but He also becomes the new realm we live in. Thus, the way we experience death to sin is not by trying to be dead to it in ourselves. It is by staying in the realm of resurrection. The realm of resurrection is the realm of the Spirit and life (1 Cor. 15:45). In this realm we are automatically freed from sin. The power of sin is broken in our lives by what one servant of the Lord has called "the expulsive power of a new affection." This new affection is in the realm of the Spirit. It is the love of God poured out in my heart by the Holy Spirit that enables me to put to death the practices of my body (Rom. 5:5; 8:13).

Dealing with sin is not achieved in a process of trying to overcome it. Rather, it is by drawing from the life-power of Christ in the realm of resurrection. Instead of interacting with sin as though it was my responsibility to overcome it in myself, I interact with Christ, who is my relationship with sin. In that relationship, sin is a dead thing to me. Because I can exercise my spirit where I am alive to God in Christ, I come under the expulsive power of a new affection for God and the things of God (Rom. 8:5-6). It is this affection that immobilizes the force of sin in my life. In the realm of the Spirit, indwelling sin forever remains a dead thing to me, because I died and my new me is now hidden with Christ in God (Col. 3:3-4).

We are human it would be impossible for us not to sin. We will be perfect in heaven, not until.

Eeyore Christianity:

"I'm going to sin today, I just know it."

Thankfully, we are not expected to live out our Christian life

without sin, and we do have the means to overcome.

This is where so many go wrong.

We are challenged to live without sin Today.

Today, if you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.

Sufficient for Today are the troubles thereof.

There is a certain fatalistic feel to someone facing each day

excusing themselves with the notion that sin is inevitable.

Any mature Christian who has never put their head to the pillow

with a clear conscience must certainly be clinging to this

inevitability, but it is not so.

We are to strive against sin*, by pursuing righteous

and holy living through obedience. Sin is mentioned in 16 of the 23

verses in Romans 6. I will submit one for consideration.

16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey,

you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death,

or of obedience leading to righteousness

As Watchman Nee once said, "we overcome sin by reckoning".

11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin,

but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Hebrews 12:

3 For consider Him who endured such hostility

from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary

and discouraged in your souls.

4  You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, *striving against sin.

If there is anything in the excellent word given by @Mr. M that stands out, it's this verse from Romans 6:16:

8 minutes ago, Mr. M said:

Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey,

you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death,

or of obedience leading to righteousness

Obedience. We are certainly not perfect, and we can indeed err on account of...

Not knowing as we ought to know
Seeing darkly
Striving against this flesh that is perishing

So, knowing this, what can we do? We listen to the Lord and obey Him. We trust Him to correct us if we err, and to teach us so we may walk in the Spirit in newness of life. In this way as our brother states, we may overcome!

No Eeyore for us. Rather, "I will listen to the Lord and obey His voice today."

My battle is not against sin and sins, for I have always lost that battle and always will because my flesh is powerless. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

My battle in this life is to walk continually in the Spirit.

Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. :3  For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: :4  That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

So then, here is where I battle my flesh, by walking in the Spirit.

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

I feel for a post I read from a member this week who mentioned they were not sure it they were saved because they fall short with sin.

We all come from a fallen nature since the fall of Adam and Eve , but Christ Jesus came to break the curse of sin over us, so to set us free from the bondage's-chains- of sin. Sin only comes to Steal, Kill and Destroy. When we are truly saved in Christ we seek to have a living daily faith filled faithful true honest relationship with God.

The moment we come to Christ and in true repentance of our sins at the foot of the cross and ask God for help, for forgiveness and ask God to help us begin to be the child of God He always intended for us to be,  He will come to us and come make a home in us by the indwelling of His Holy Spirit. The journey begins with God in Christ Jesus and Gods Holy Spirit living inside us as our guide, our reprimander, our teacher. Gods Holy Spirit will work in us, for us to be able to be conquerors and be ambassadors representing Him as a visible shining light to others, so others also can find back their way to God and be also free from the bondage's of sin.

If the Son sets you free you are freed INDEED

John 8:36 Christ Jesus said:

36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. 37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because My Word hath no place in you. 38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.

Being under the refuge of God plan of salvation for us, Its not ok to sin, and that is why many of us have come to Christ Jesus to ask for help in the first place , to help us be free from sin and the consequences that sin brings.

1 Corinthians 11:27-32 Christ Jeus said: But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

1 Corinthians 11:27

Yes there are serious c0nsequences to having sin dominate our lives and true believers in Christ Jesus have also a part to play in their daily living relationship with God.

Like any relationship, we have our own part to play to make that relationship work and become free from the bondage's and seductions and lures that come  from the great snake oil salesman-the serpent satan .

The bible is clear

You canno9t serve God and sin.

When truly in God you want very much to be free from sin and when you do sin, you are to confess and ask God for forgiveness of your sin. God will faithfully  forgive you and help you back up on your feet and also help you to overco0me that particular sin.

As true Christians living daily in a true sincere honest faithful obedient relationship with Christ Jesus ,we are not to live two lives, say one thing and do another and be hypocrites.

You cannot justify sin  , and satan and his workers/followers always look to attack your position in Christ.

Put on your daily armour . Ephesians ch6

Here is a  christian man who explains the problem and dangers of sin.

We all have free will and a conscious mind.  I know I will sin every day.  I'm sure I'm not even aware of it sometimes.  Other times there are obvious temptations.  Some of those have completely disappeared by the grace of God, some are extremely difficult to resist, and I fail.  When I fail, it's a decision I make to give in and go against God's will and choose my own will.  I almost feel outside myself on auto pilot, I know I shouldn't, but I do anyway.  Others are just habit, like swearing.  There is no thought, just a reaction.  I pray several times a day for God to help me stop swearing.  Some days are better than others, but I keep doing it.  It's slowly getting better.

So how do we navigate this?  In my mind, you have to try.  If I just pray about it and take no action, I'm going to keep doing it.  I saw this with alcohol.  God freed me from this, but I had to do my part as well.  The need to drink was gone but I still thought about drinking.  I know God will not give us more than we can handle, but we still have to handle it.  Never giving up, failing, asking forgiveness and striving to do better.  Not out of obligation but to please God.  It's a feeling, not a conscious thought to try harder.

I read one day something from a preacher all would know and might be a shock to some what they said but said "God expects us to sin".  I don't follow that belief. For me I know no one not God not our enemy controls me. Before Christ even died did He not say "go and sin no more"? It was not about being perfect or sinless. Christ said "Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” Sin has a price in this world Adam and Eve? Yeah.. no one forced them but that sin has a price.  But we do not have to sin, no one and again not God not our enemy nor even our flesh controls us unless we allow it. For we know sinless does not make us righteous. So I do try not to sin since this flesh loves to sin. Praise GOD glory to JESUS by Him through Him all things are possible..

That man Jesus healed.. He goes back finds him says go and sin more or something worse may happen to you. Sin in this world has a price. We forget the enemy is not kind has no mercy no grace no forgiveness. Everything God is Satan is the flip side. They do not rest nor sleep and are coming at us 24/7. So many bless them are moved only by what they see and feel. Can be very hard to grasp that when Christ died we died.. when Christ rose we rose. Were a new creation were are not this flesh. Since Christ rose sin cannot touch Him.. sorry.. haha wondering around in all this. Praise GOD for Jesus Christ who over came the word. Man I lean on.. Him

I must humbly disagree with your major premise. Scripture is replete with exhortations to put sin to death, deny one self, to reckon one self dead to sin, cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and to put off various sins etc.

While we cannot do this without God's enabling, He will not do it without our working.

The devil will confuse us on this issue , either self effort or being passive and waiting for God to do it.

We are called to be co-workers with God in dealing with the sin issue.

peace

Jeffrey

I too disagree, but find the example and warning  of Matthew coming to mind for application individually;  “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none.  Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”

With that I suggest failure is emminent when one simply  works on eliminating  sin. That there must be replacement of sin with that which  gives glory to God. Otherwise the end is worse than the beginning plight.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
