Luke 23:52-56

 52 Joseph went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus. 53 So Joseph took the body down from the cross and wrapped it in cloth. Then he put Jesus’ body in a tomb that was cut in a wall of rock. This tomb had never been used before. 54 This was late on Preparation Day. When the sun went down, the Sabbath day would begin.

55 The women who had come from Galilee with Jesus followed Joseph. They saw the tomb and saw inside where the body of Jesus was laid. 56 Then the women left to prepare perfumes and spices.

On the Sabbath day they rested, as the law of Moses commanded.

Mark 16:1 - And when the sabbath [high day] was past [finished], Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint Him.

Luke 23:56 - And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the Sabbath day according to the [fourth] commandment.

There is a day in between these sabbaths as well as a distinction to what kind of Sabbath they were.

On then…

Matthew 28:1 - IN the end of the sabbath [not after it has passed], as it began to dawn <epiphosko> toward the first day of the week [as the Sabbath sun was setting], came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre [not to anoint the body].

2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

3  His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

 5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

6 "He is not here for He is risen" [in the end of the Sabbath], as he said, "Come, see the place where the Lord lay."

<epiphosko> is only used twice in the New Testament, both times in reference to Jesus, one His burial, the other His resurrection.

Here’s the other verse (23:54)–

Lu 23:53 - And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. 54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath [high day] drew on <epiphosko>.

Both time frames mention are before sunset.

Luke's account is  is before sunset on Passover, before day #1 of the week of Unleaven Bread. That "high day" sabbath would then need to expire, with evening/night and the next day time, before the next normal weekday (day #2) when it would be lawful to go out and both purchase the sweet spices and prepare them, followed by Matthew's 7th day weekly Sabbath since we are clearly told it is “towards the first day of the week.”

The translators could just as easily used the words “drew on” in both instances, or the word dawn, as it to can imply something drawing close, as it is in the song Dawning of the Age, of Dawn of space travel….

@BlindSeeker

Let's look first at Mark 16:1

 16:1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

(for that sabbath day was an high day,)  john 19:31 (copy from your post)

........the Sabbath ends at 6:00pm in the evening and from that time on it is the first day of the week when the women bought the spices to used for what they wanted to do.

And then after about let's say about 11:30 hours after the end of the Sabbath the Sun rises.

In verse 2, it says that they were at the tomb with the rising of the Sun. 11 and a half hours after the end of the Sabbath day  or 11 and a half hours in the first day of the week.

(It must have been day light about half hour before the rising of the Sun. )

2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

John 19:31 - The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies         should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day,     (for that sabbath day was an high day,)      besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

@Anne2 this is the schedule of the dayly morning and evening sarifice. I hope to find that helpful in what you are looking for.

Every morning at 9:am and every evening at 3:pm.

Jesus died at the same time as the evening sacrifice at 3:pm or the 9th hour Jewish time of the day which began at 6:am.

[3 hours of prayer see Mishnah Berakhot]

The Jewish day began at sundown.  The daytime was divided into 12 seasonal hours, but the day division of hours was focused on the schedule of the Tamid sacrifice.  In the first century AD the night was divided into 4 night watches of 3 hours each: (1) from sundown to 9PM; (2) from 9PM to 12 midnight; (3) from 12 midnight to 3AM; and (4) from 3AM to dawn.  A trumpet call, known as the "cockcrow" signaled the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th watch.

Thank you. However, the beginning of the month did not begin in the evening. But with the appearance of the new moon. Night. The moon was the night light.

Excerpts from Chabad..

Granted the way of common usage does not help with these things such as the three daily prayers. Commonly spoken of as the third is actually the first....See chabad as follows.

The third of the three daily prayers, called the maariv (or arvit) prayer, is recited after dark (the first two are recited in the morning and afternoon). This prayer was instituted by our Patriarch Jacob.

Actually, when considering that the Jewish calendar date begins with the preceding nightfall, maariv – the evening prayer – is actually seen as the first of the day's prayers.

While a day in the secular calendar begins and ends at midnight, a Jewish day goes from nightfall to nightfall. Shabbat begins on Friday night, and a yahrtzeit lamp is kindled the evening before the yahrtzeit (anniversary of a person's passing), before nightfall.

Four parts for the first part which is the night and four parts for the second part which is the day.

Jesus died 21 hours in the Passover day the 14th of Nissan. The time of the slaing of the evening sacrifice.

The Jews have had some traditions that differ from the book of Leviticus.

It really is not about leviticus concerning day from night

Dividing day from night

Gen 1:14 ¶  And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: {the day … : Heb. between the day and between the night }
15  And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16  And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. {to rule the day … : Heb. for the rule of the day, etc. }
17  And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18  And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

The High Sabbath finished the 15th it was a double Sabbath. The weekly Sabbath and the first day of the feast Unleavened Bread.

On the 16th on the morning the had the waive offering of the Omer, a shift of barley of the first Harvest. Every one was waiting for the waive offering to begin and eat from the Harvest of barley.

No one ate from the New barley Harvest before the waive offering of the shift of barley. The call it the offering of the Omer.

Which days focus on the daily sacrifices from morning to evening each day

Numb 28:3  And thou shalt say unto them, This is the offering made by fire which ye shall offer unto the LORD; two lambs of the first year without spot day by day, for a continual burnt offering. {day by day: Heb. in a day }
4  The one lamb shalt thou offer in the morning, and the other lamb shalt thou offer at even;

Le 23:37  These are the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD, a burnt offering, and a meat offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, every thing upon his day:

Numb 28:23  Ye shall offer these beside the burnt offering in the morning, which is for a continual burnt offering.
24  After this manner ye shall offer daily
, throughout the seven days, the meat of the sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD: it shall be offered beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering.
I think it is pretty clear?

There are varying counts...of when a day begins. The days of EATING  unleavened bread are evening the 14th day, through the evening of the twenty first day. A person can eat at anytime, and multiple times a day.

I understand that they had a moon calendar and the first day of the first month of the year it was determined by the moon and it was not the same day every year and it was on different day in April year after year. That I understand. They had a religious Calendar and they had to follow their religious Calendar.

Other Nations had moon Calendars. But theirs came with their religious celebrations.

In the south emisphere they will have perhaps a moon Calendar but the seasons are not the same.

It does not matter today at all only to understand what God had given them. Keeping them in check not to go after the feasts of the Nations around them.

But what is matter you are bulls eye that part of the day is counted as one day.

If not Jesus will always be more than three days dead.

Some Spirit caused trouble and those who opposed the Catholic church followed.

Jesus told the jews the sign will be that the Messiah has to die first and then he will live forever.

Something they did not believe because they did not wanted him to ascend into Heaven.

This is the point Jesus was making to them.

Does dawn mean early morning?

: the first appearance of light in the morning followed by sunrise.

........According to Wikipedia, dawn is the time of day when twilight begins before sunrise. It is marked by the appearance of indirect sunlight scattering in the Earth's atmosphere.

Scientific meaning

Dawn is when the Sun's center is 18° below the horizon.

Dawn is when the Sun is 6° below the horizon.

Other meanings

Dawn chorus: The start of birdsong in the morning.

Hello AdHoc.

How they did it, and how they looked at these things.

4. A day with regards to the sacrifices.

A couple of excerpts from Chabad

"A Long Day

Also note that, in a certain sense, the celebration of the 15th is considered to be an extension of the 14th. How so? With regard to sacrifices,"

"In other words, if you were given one day to eat an offering, the day consisted of the daytime followed by its night (unlike all other purposes, for which Jewish calendar days consist of the night followed by the day). Thus, as far as sacrifices are concerned, the night after a sacrifice is brought is an extension of the day it is brought.5"

numb 28:16  And in the fourteenth day of the first month is the passover of the LORD.
17  And in the fifteenth day of this month is the feast: seven days shall unleavened bread be eaten.
18  In the first day shall be an holy convocation; ye shall do no manner of servile work therein:
19  But ye shall offer a sacrifice made by fire for a burnt offering unto the LORD; two young bullocks, and one ram, and seven lambs of the first year: they shall be unto you without blemish:
20  And their meat offering shall be of flour mingled with oil: three tenth deals shall ye offer for a bullock, and two tenth deals for a ram;
21  A several tenth deal shalt thou offer for every lamb, throughout the seven lambs:
22  And one goat for a sin offering, to make an atonement for you.
23  Ye shall offer these beside the burnt offering in the morning, which is for a continual burnt offering.
24  After this manner ye shall offer daily,
throughout the seven days, the meat of the sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD: it shall be offered beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering.
25  And on the seventh day ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work.

Le 23:37  These are the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD, a burnt offering, and a meat offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, every thing upon his day:

As you can see, during the feasts, specific sacrifices were to brought every morning, for that day. And the days were from morning to evening. I think of it as temple time, or days. As every day for the priestly ministration was morning to evening. Ans certainly when it comes to Christ our passover, we are focused on him as the sacrifice, upon his day.

Although you have written and quoted well, I'm not sure of the point you wanted to make. I apologize. Could you, in a few sentences, summarize it for me. Thanks.

All I am saying is the various ways they counted a day. I quoted Chabad. the night they ate the passover was considered the 14th day because of the sacrifices. The passover sacrifice belonged to the fourteenth day all night until the morning, when a sacrifice was brought for the first day of unleavened bread. A day in the month would have made that night the beginning of the 15th day, but was considered still the 14th by them. The best way I can say it is, a liturgical day (temple ministry) was continually from morning to evening, everyday of the year.

Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

      Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

      This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

      For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

      2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

      So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

      Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
      Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

      Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

      As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

      Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
      Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

      So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
