Why did god hate Esau?

So yeah, why the seemingly unconditional hate on Esau?

Its not so much that He hated Esau but that He preferred Jacob--that is closer the Hebrew rendering. Jacob may have been a scoundrel, but he never turned his back on His G-d.

They in their own strength built up what God had destroyed..

Esau, loved less in comparison to Jacob. When you read the account of Esau selling his birthright to Jacob you can detect Esau's attitude toward the blessings of God. He was not grateful for the blessing of being the firstborn, his only concern was to have his flesh gratified for the moment. This must have been a on going attitude, the Word states that he loved the outdoors, wandering far from home must have been nothing new for him, he was not interested in the things that concerned his family or the God of His father in which the blessing would come. An attitude of ingratitude. God loves all, but in comparison to Jacob it was less.

Hello Azathoth,

It wasn't the hate for the man Esau himself or the love for Jacob himself but it was the Love for the nation of Israel that was going to come from the loins of Jacob which was God's chosen people whom he was going to seperate unto himself. The nation that came from the loins of Esau was a Gentile nation and was considered an unclean nation that was not set apart for God's use they were unclean in God's eyes so God looked not favoralbly upon them as all the other Gentile nations. But God loved the nation of Irael because it was the chosen family in which the Messiah came into this world through. So it is not a love hate thing like people think it is it goes beyond that. blessings

I understand COMPLETELY why God would hate Esau! Esau was an irreverent man, a rebel against God, and a scofflaw toward God's commands. So God hating Esau is not a struggle at all for me to comprehend.

What I CAN'T figure out for the life of me is WHY GOD LOVED JACOB!!!!
