Would we have such a wide variety of confusion of the Bible if we had a prophet on the earth today to tell us the correct interpretaion of scripture?

Yes, we would.

Just because you have a prophet, that doesn't mean everybody, or even anybody, is going to listen to him.

If a prophet of the likes of Elijah were preaching today, half the church world would be overturned in a matter of days, and there'd be "christians" trying to kill him, and telling him to shut up because what he said was too harsh.

That is exactly true. Christians do not accept real prophets. The false ones are very readily accepted.

I believe in modern day prophets. How do I know they are prophets? I have prayed about them and studied their "fruits". The Holy Spirit has confirmed to me they are prophets of God. God is a God of order, not a God of confusion. Any church claiming to be the only true church of God must be led by a prophet, who has been called of God.

You're right regarding people not listening to prophets. In the times of the Bible, people did not hearken to the teachings of Moses, Isaiah, Ezekial and such. And further, I can also add an additional type of "false prophet" to this. Which is one preaching "another Jesus", that is, a prophet who presents "Jesus of Nazareth", but in a manner not consistent with properly read scripture.

2 Cor. 11:3But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

4For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

As Jesus said, "Many shall come in MY name and shall decieve many."

Satanists are easy to spot, but the "False Christian prophets", that is the wolves in sheeps clothing, are not always so easy to spot.

Acts 17:10And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

11These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. 12Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

So we see they believed Pauls word not merely because of his own merit, but because it agreed with established scripture.

Jesus never said, "Take up your cross and follow Paul." or "Take up your cross and follow Peter." He said, "Take up your cross and follow ME." Which is why satellite christianity, this notion that you're supposed to sit in the same church year after year under the same man, is so dangerous.

Proverbs 11:14

Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

Proverbs 15:22

Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.

So getting all your biblical teaching from one man, or one group of men, is in itself unbiblical.

Proverbs 8:14

Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.

Here the speaker is understood to be wisdom itself, i.e. "The Word of God".

Hence the Word is to be our chief counsellor.

In any case, we see that scriptrue trumps revelation every time.

What is scripture? Scripture is revelation from God to us through His prophets. The prophets in turn write down what they received from God. If revelation from a prophet of God does not trump previous scripture we would never have received the Bible, especially the New Testament. For the Jews believe the same way as you do in that how can the New Testament, reveleation from God to his Apostles, trump the Torah. If you lived in the days of Isaiah, which would lead you to salvation, your own interpretation of scripture or hearkening to the prophet Isaiah and his interpretation of scripture? The Jews at the time of Christ hearkened unto their own interpretation of scriptures rather than the current revelation from Christ or through his Apostles. A prophet also reveals when previous prophecy is fullfilled. In Matthew, it appears he is pleading with the Jews to see the light of fullfilled scripture regarding the coming of the Messiah.

Of course, Smith made this prophecy right after South Carolina had just attempted to leave the Union over the Amistad incident so it didn't take a brainiac to figure out what would occur...

Regardless, let's look at just one of his prophecies.

Verily, thus saith the Lord: It is wisdom in my servant David W. Patten, that he settle up all his business as soon as he possibly can, and make a disposition of his merchandise, that he may perform a mission unto me next spring, in company with others, even twelve including himself, to testify of my name and bear glad tidings unto the world. (Doctrine & Covenants 114:1)

Too bad that Patten died in 1838 before being able to complete this.

I also highly doubt that Smith was too concerned about slavery considering he believed that blacks were fallen angels.

You skipped over the part of Joseph Smith's prophecy about where he chose the state where the first shots of the Civil War were fired, Fort Sumter. He also prophesied that the South would seek help from Great Britain. Great Britain was seriously considering intervening for the South until the South's defeat at Gettysburg. Joseph Smith also predicted that Great Britian would seek help in defending itself from other nations which is what happened in WWII. Are those lucky guesses?

With regards that David Patten died before he could serve a mission. In 2 Kings 20:1-6, King Hezekiah was "sick unto death." The prophet Isaiah said, "Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live." Hezekiah then prays for mercy. Minutes later (v 4) Isaiah returns to Hezekiah and tells him that God has heard his prayers and Isaiah tells Hezekiah he will live 15 more years. Does that make Isaiah a false prophet?

With regards to Joseph Smith and you saying that he believed that blacks are fallen angels. He never said anything of the sort. I quote from Joseph Smith dating January 2, 1843, "Elder Hyde inquired the situation of the negro. They have souls, and are subjects of Salvation. Go into Cincinnati or any city, and find an educated negro, and you will see a man who has risen by the powers of his own mind to his exalted state of respectibility. The slaves in Washington are more refined than many in high places, and the black boys will take the shine off many of those they brush and wait on." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith p 269).

I'm not here to convice anybody that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. But if someone is sincerely wants to know about the life of Joseph Smith, I recomment watching a documentary by the Vermon Public Broadcasting Company titles "American Prophet." It is a very good non-biased documentary on his life. And last of all, ask God if Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God. That's what I did.

Jeremiah 5:30 "A horrible and shocking thing has happened in this land--31. the prophets give false prophecies, and the priests rule with an iron hand. And worst yet, my people like it that way? But what will you do when the end comes?

God will have his dealings with both the false prophet and the false shepherd.

Believe me though, the ones that are truely sent of God, speaking the message He desires are not widely received. But those false prophets/shepherds continue to speak the "peace, peace" message and people continue to listen!

They will be judged but so will those who listen!

We must all know the True Shepherd (Jesus) and we will never be led wrong. His sheep know His Voice and follow Him. We don't need a prophet-as those in the old testiment-if

we are in tune with Our Shepherd-He will lead and guide us into all truth!!!
