OK.....I have to leave for work now, but wanted to put this up. I haven't had time to do any scripture searching at all.

When Jesus descended for three days, what excactly happened?

there are some beliefs out there that are totally wrong, yet I have found something that is totally surprising compared to that.

Let's "search the scriptures" gang! :P

ephesians4:9,Before the death of CHRIST,both the lost and the saved went to hades(hebrew:sheol)although it was divided into the place of torment and the paradise of GOD(also called abraham's bosom,luke16:19-31).when JESUS hung on the cross,HE consoled the penitent theif that he would be in paradise with CHRIST that day.one of the accomplishments of the Resurrection was th lead "captivity captive,"that is , to remove the old testament saints from Abraham's bosom(hades) and lead them to heaven.

Ephesians 4:9

The lower parts of the earth have sometimes been taken to refer to hades or hell. But that would not fit in with the argument here: His Ascension necessitated a previous descent to earth but not to hell. In addition, the Scriptures indicate that Christ

Hi Carl,

I reserched it and came to the next conclusion....

Did Jesus go to hell (the place of eternal torment), while His body was in the grave?

No. Jesus went to Hades while in the grave (Acts 2:27, 31; cf. Lk. 23:43).

Some people believe that Jesus went to hell after dying on the cross.

Because, older translations (e.g., KJV), which use English words differently than we use them today, use the word "hell" instead of our present-day word "Hades."

For example, the KJV translates the Greek word for Hades and the Greek word for hell, into the same English word ("hell"). It does not distinguish between the two different Greek words (hades and geenna).

Note: Tartarus (Greek tartaroo) is also translated "hell." It only appears in 2 Pet. 2:4, and denotes the abode of sinful angels awaiting judgment (cf. Jude 1:6).

Because, incorrect interpretations of 1 Pet. 3:18-20 have resulted in some people concluding that Jesus preached in hell.

While in the Grave, Jesus Went to Hades (Paradise)

Upon Jesus' death, He (and one of the thieves crucified with Him) went to Hades (Acts 2:27, 31). There are two realms in Hades ---- one is a place of comfort and rest, the other is a place of torment (Lk. 16:19-31).

Before His death, Jesus tells us that He would go to Paradise after dying on the cross (Lk. 23:43), which corresponds to the Hadean realm of comfort and rest (Lk. 16:19f).

Confusion with Older Translations

Some older translations use the English word "hell" to represent Hades (i.e., the temporary abode of souls awaiting judgment), in addition to the place of eternal torment. If we're not careful when reading older translations, we can erroneously assume that the English word "hell," is used in them, the same way we use it today. And, we could falsely conclude that Jesus went to the place of eternal torment, after dying on the cross.

Unlike some older translations, newer translations distinguish between hell and Hades. For example, compare Acts 2:27, 31 in the old King James Version with the New King James Version. You will see that the old King James Version uses the word "hell" and the New King James Version uses the word "Hades." Peter tells us that Jesus was in Hades while His body was in the grave (Acts 2:27, 31). He was not in hell (the place of eternal torment).

Confusion Regarding 1 Peter 3:18-20

Peter tells us that Jesus was put to death in the flesh and made alive in the spirit, in which He went and preached to the spirits now in prison, who once were disobedient during the building of the ark (1 Pet. 3:18-20).

Understanding Jesus' preaching relating to people living in the days of Noah is not essential for salvation. There are two popular suggestions, one that Jesus was preaching through Noah, and one that Jesus went to the Hadean realm of torment and preached to these souls. For information on these views, see B.W. Johnson and Matthew Henry.

I believe that Jesus' preaching mentioned in 1 Pet. 3:18-20 was accomplished through Noah ---- Jesus is the eternal Word (Jn. 1:1), and Noah was a preacher of righteousness (2 Pet. 2:5), therefore Jesus was preaching through Noah (Jn. 1:1; 2 Pet. 2:5).

Whether Jesus preached through Noah, or personally preached in Hades, notice that Jesus did not go to hell and preach ---- 1 Pet. 3:18-20 does not tell us that Jesus went to hell, after His crucifixion.

Conclusion:

Where was Jesus while His body was in the grave? The Bible tells us He was in Hades, Paradise (Acts 2:27, 31; Lk. 23:43). Jesus did not go to hell (the place of eternal torment), while His body was in the grave.

Very good answers. You all have saved me some searching.

Yes to the answer that He went to hades and not hell, and brought the saints to heaven from there.

Tell me, tell me, tell me true, where in scripture did Jesus ever talk about hades?

There is no such thing as hades...it is hell that is spoken of in the bible...and Jesus mentions it more than heaven...

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
