Where does the idea of Eternal Security come from?

Well, I believe that it's taught in the Bible, but there are many who don't believe that is the case. That's probably why there are several threads on this and similar topics going already.

I did find something on whether or not you could lose your salvation and when it got started:

"THE QUESTION OF whether or not a true believer can lose his salvation after he has become justified by the shed blood of Christ has existed within the church almost from its inception. The idea that one can lose his salvation is not a new doctrine that has recently surfaced. In fact, during the persecution of the early church in the second and third centuries, many individuals who were faced with the prospect of persecution and even death renounced their faith in order to avoid persecution and live. Later, when Christianity became tolerated in the Roman Empire, those same individuals who renounced their faith in Christ desired to become accepted back into the church. Where does the idea of Eternal Security come from?

Surely not from Scripture. Oh, one can find some passages that SEEM to teach it but when the WHOLE COUNSEL OF GOD is factored in, one should immediately see that Eternal Security is NOT taught in Scripture.

Augustine and Calvin contributed to the belief. Predestination and perseverance of the saints (Calvinism) logically leads to unconditional eternal security. I believe in conditional eternal security: if you continue to abide and maintain the love relationship to the end, you have biblical eternal security. If you reject Christ after knowing Him and die in this rebellious state, you will not be saved.

even Peter rejected Jesus, denounced ever having been with Him.......

Peter returned to Christ, and repented of having rejected Him.....

Judas, rejected Christ Jesus also, turned against Him....

but I do not feel that Judas repented and returned, rather, was eaten up with guilt over what he had done, that he could no longer live with the shame and dishonor.... I believe that if Judas had not hung himself, Jesus would have accepted him back as He did Peter and all the others that bailed out on Him..... just as Jesus accepts us back into the fold after we turn away from Him.....

If you are at the point of death and do not repent of your sins, lets take for an example you are a liar and you do not repent of your sins what does revelation 20 say? No liars will enter into the kingdom of heaven.... tells me that, that person has lost his salvation for enterance into heaven...wouldn't you think?

Shilo, I don't think that person is a real Christian at all.

How can you wilfully not repent of your sins when you are dying??

But what if you die all of sudden while sinning....oh wonderful grace

A good point Angels.What happens to a person who, after repenting and receiving God's promise of eternal life with Him, dies while in the midst of committing an illegal or immoral offense.

Eric, I think different, I believe that person will still go to heaven, because its by GRACE we are saved, Jesus died for our sins from the past, present and future sins, He will not bring us that far to drop us------
