There is no way on God's green earth the United States is gonna allow the Indians to become a separate nation within Americas borders. No way.

I'm not going to say its impossible these days. Our gov'ment is doing so many things that are wrong, upsidedown, backwards, and don't forger STUPID that I would not be surprised if they were able to pull it off. The whole thing could easily get snarled in court for years and years as it is.

Who knows, maybe the Native Americans could do things right?

Having lived on a reservation, and seeing how the reservation rules itself, and even living in a town where russell means lived, it is doubtful they would do things right. This is typical AIM shoot themselves in the foot extremist actions. If you want an idea of what this is about, google russell means, leonard peltier, american indian movement. These are the people who are making a fuss over sovereignty. What I find interesting is that he has declared the lakota to be seperate nation and broken the treaties, yet he isnt even president of the tribe. He is just a usurper rebel. This would be like me declaring Arizona its own seperate nation, setting up a constitution etc and then presenting a paper to washington dc stating arizona is a seperate nation. I would be laughed at since I have no authority. Neither does anyone in this movement have authority to break free of the US. They dont represent their tribe any more than I can represent arizona.

Means and a delegation of Lakota leaders including Phyllis Young, an organizer of Women of All Red Nations, Rapid City, South Dakota-area activist Duane Martin Sr. and Gary Rowland, a leader of the Chief Big Foot Riders, declared the Lakota a sovereign nation with property rights over thousands of square miles in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana. His authority to speak for the Sioux, let alone make policy declarations on their behalf, is not clear, as his attempts at election to the Presidency of the Oglala Sioux have thus far been unsuccessful

The other members of the activist delegation were Duane Martin Sr., Gary Rowland and Phyllis Young. Duane Martin Sr. is a leader of a group called the Strong Heart Society. Gary Rowland is a leader of a group called the Big Foot Riders. Phyllis Young is the founder of a group called Women of All Red Nations.

Means' group is based in Porcupine, South Dakota on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Means' group is not an agency or branch of any Lakota tribe, although he ran unsuccessfully for president of the Oglala Sioux tribe in 2006.
