I'm looking forward to the new FCC ruling taking effect that forces cable companies to sell you only the channels you want and not their "packages". This means I could get the dozen or so channels I watch and get rid of everything else. It would be nice. IMO Adelphia cable here in Idaho is a complete ripoff. I think I would want TLC, Discovery, TNT, A&E, History, UPN, Sci-Fi and the networks, the rest could go bye bye. I don't need the other 40 channels of crap.

cerran, are you serious? are they really going to allow that? oh, how wonderful that would be! can you give me a link to more info on that ruling, and when it might go into effect?

nice to see you posting river! where ya been?

i can't give up fox news. i can't give up my local fox channel either because of the local news. i wouldn't want to give up TLC, A&E, discovery, discovery health, the travel channel (i love watching the shows about vegas LOL, even though i live here!), CourtTV, and the History channel. i don't agree with the documentaries they do on christianity and biblical figures, because they're inundated with lies. but they do have a great deal of quality programming.

the weather channel? i could live without. the weather doesn't significantly change in nevada. now when i was in texas, it was a staple of my TV diet.

On a lighter note. I heard that the amount of time one spends watching the weather channel is in direct proportion to your age. (the older you are--the more you watch the weather channel) must be some truth in that as it is about the first thing we check if we turn the tv on!

It also depends on where you live. Here in oklahoma we whatch the weather a lot for general security. Nature will kill you in oklahoma if you are not careful :(

Other One, my son and his family are just now moving to Ok City area and that is one thing I told them...when you buy a house get one with a storm cellar or basement. Of course they had lived in Wichita Falls in the past and it is about the same there! Out here we are on the edge of 'tornado alley' and not quite as prone to them altho we get more than we want (one is more than we want!).

Lady C, I watch Fox news every at least for a time every evening to get an idea of what is going on in the world. I think your right about that. If I had to give up my tv it would be the news and weather that I would miss most !!

My husband keeps mentioning cancelling cable. He knows he spends just way too much time idly wasting time in front of the tube. I normally watch only Dr. Phil and Survivor, although there's no way I can actually watch Dr. Phil everyday, because of the time that it is on. In any case, our tv seems to be on constantly. I think this is normal for a modern household, but I'm getting sick of it. The dependancy.

I really am thinking more and more that cancelling cable is a very good idea, but as lame as this sounds, it seems like such a huge step - a monumental sacrifice. lol.

I'm thinking it's time to stop debating this in my mind and just go for it. It will probably actually be freeing in the end.

I actually did when I was a divorced mother with my daughter. I got about three channels, watched about one hour of tv a day or less and didn't feel like I was missing a thing. I had more time for reading and hobbies. These days, I'd like the extra time for Bible reading, prayer, reading Christian literature, as well as hobbies and family time.

I just tried to mention it to my husband again and asked him if he really was going to do it. I just got ssshushed by both my daughter and my husband because they are watching TV!!!!!! How ironic!

I guess I'm here for a nudge, so nudge away brothers and sisters. Or maybe this is a challenge. Not quite sure what this is actually. lol.

Go ahead Artsy!!!! cancel the whole thing altogether.

There are some horrible things there like Bravo and Faux News.

No human being should watch those things :wow:

Artsy Lady,

I got rid of cable 3 years ago. During one of my pastor's sermons 3 years ago, he said that he couldn't understand how christians could watch stuff on tv that is the same stuff that put Jesus on the cross{ people beating up someone, people killing other people, bed scenes, cuss words etc.}. Of course my wife and I only watched the news and some good old comedy shows like "I Love Lucy", and "The Andy Griffith Show", and a few others, but my pastor said that he didn't think any christian should support cable tv,since they are responsible for bringing the trash into the living rooms. I agree with him. Even though we don't watch trash,I didn't feel right paying for the cable that is transmitting garbage. One of our church members calls it, "helevision". We have a tv, but we watch dvd's of old tv shows. My pastor hasn't watched regular tv for 20 years. I most likely will never get cable again, and my wife doesn't miss it. It will save you some money. Cable was getting pretty expensive around here, and I probably would have gotten rid of it anyway.

Salt,

true you can always watch just what you want and not the trash. I have DirecTV and there are many screening filters available.

Aside from FoxNEWS and some of the decent Christian shows on TBN, I watch the old stuff to. They have several channels in the low 300 range that feature most of the old stuff.

For example, I watch:

Happy Days

Laverne and Shirley

Gunsmoke

The Rifleman

The Walton's

Little House on the Prairie

Red Skelton

I am very much for Cable, or Satellite, because there is much good on them. We all have the choice to watch what we choose. Just like gun's don't kill, people do, the same can be said for TV. It's not TV that corrupts, it's what you choose to watch.

Just my 2

We have cable and the tv is on all the time too, but we are doing other things so it has become like a nightlight to us. We have it on so much that when we do turn it off and turn on the radio, its like a treat...lol. Sometimes when the electric goes off during a storm, we look at each other and say "now what?". I know what you mean by an additction, but with summer coming, maybe other interests will replace part or all of it?

Hmm.... I have cable too. Only have it because where I live you can't pick up anything on just a regular antenna. I get aprox 75 channels.... and only watch about 5 of them:

*Fox Cable News

*Discovery Channel

*History Channel

*Animal Planet

*CBS (for local news)

We been grippin' cause we don't get any Christian channels. If we want Christian we have to buy the next package deal up that costs alot more than what we're paying already ($52.00)!

Yup... Sounds like a good idea to get rid of it.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this study, I'll be focusing on Daniel and his picture of the resurrection and its connection with Yeshua (Jesus).

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
