axxman, no matter how you slice it, old men taking 13, 14, and 15 year olds to bed, and calling it "marriage" when it isn't, is CHILD ABUSE. there is no other way around it. and as i said before, just because the texas CPS hasn't yet found enough evidence to prosecute does not mean it isn't happening. it just means it has to be enough to pursue at trial. ask me how i know this, PLEASE, i'll be happy to tell you exactly how i know this.

I agree wholeheartedly. No other way to say it... it is absoultely wrong!!!

...but of coarse I have been the husband of one wife for 29 years who happens to be the same age. I am quite satisfied in my relationship and have never been bored NOR can I imagine having an intimate relationship with a child or any other woman for that matter. Call be old fashioned. Just as the Lord meant it to be.

axxman, i understand you were defending their rights, not their doctrines. my point to you though, is they are NOT given a constitutional right to marry little girls and force them into marital intimacy. and in fact, the marriages are not even LEGAL to begin with.

the government has a responsibility to protect children. this isn't about religious freedom.

if your religious doctrine included beating your wife, the rights of your wife to live SAFELY would prevail over your doctrine.

if your religious doctrine included having some ritual that required your child to get bit by a poisonous snake as a rite of manhood, your child's rights to be safe would prevail over your doctrine.

if your religious doctrine included strapping dynomite to your children and forcing them to be a suicide bomber, the rights of safety all the way around would prevail over your doctrine.

this is no different. the government is NOT interfering with the FLDS's freedom of faith, but our government absolutely MUST intervene when it endangers someone who can not protect themselves from harm. that's what separates the US from countries where women and children are oppressed.

There isn't ONE shred of evidence of abuse in Eldorado at this point..

As it happens, I heard the news today. It seems that every underage female between the ages of 13 or 14 and 17 has physical evidence of having given birth to at least one child. This was in their coerced marriages to relatives.

Under Texas law, children under the age of 17 generally cannot consent to sex with an adult. A girl can get married with parental permission at 16, but none of these girls is believed to have a legal marriage under state law.

It is a shame. The Constitution guarantees us freedom of religion; not the freedom to break the law.

That is the point that needs to be made, glory. Just because we have freedom to be whatever religion we want, doesn't give us the right to break the laws of the land, and last I heard, polygamy and child abuse were still against the law.
