I would value your advice in reconciling the two verses below

Exd 20:12 "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.

Luk 14:26 "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.

I believe this means if you put any of these before God.

I read this as loving the world. I see this as just the way Jesus sent the message home (pun not intended). We find in scripture this from John.

1 John 2:15

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

The word hate here means to love less. Therefore, "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate (love less) his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple."

Deitrich Bonhoeffer has a great chapter on the Luke verse in his book, The Cost of Discipleship. In chapter 5 (Discipleship and the Individual), he says that before we come to Christ our relationships with people and things are governed by our sin natures. Their ties in life (job. possessions, marriage, parents, children) are giverned by our "immediate" relationship with the world.

When we receive Christ, he becomes the mediator between us an all things. He calls us to break our immediate relationships with the people and things around us, and to begin to relate to them through Him as the mediator. We are to hate our old relatioships with everything in the world. We are to now relate to these things through Jesus. It is a powerful verse and chapter.

A very hard lesson for many. It took me sometime to see I had to let go of a friendship I have had for nearly 2 decades. My friend cannot accept the changes in my life and what see considers junk.

We need to check the context of the verses:

Luke 14:26 - 28 talks about the 'Cost of Discipleship'. Jesus is talking about the Setting your Priority right when it comes to Follow Him. You must be willing to choose Jesus, when it comes to set priority between your father, mother, brother, wife or even yourself and Jesus.

I know number of friends (especially from other religious background), who have to deny his family (in some case, literally), when they decide to follow Jesus.

Exodus 20:12 talks about general instruction of being obedient to your father and mother.

Try to remember that, for some, changing religions means a death sentence or, at the very least, a resolute desire that would result in leaving an entire family behind.

If you can not be a follower of JESUS an stay with those in your life, then you need to choose JESUS.

Also, you can still honor them even if you hate them. A big part of this word "HONOR" simply means to pay them due respect and is also tied to giving them money.

Luke 14:26 is talking about "loving less". We should love our family less than we love God.

In comparison, our love for God should make our love for our family almost seem like hate. Its not saying we should literally hate our family.
