Can we baptize ourselves? The reason I ask is that I was baptized as an infant and have been debating getting rebaptized. I'm skeptical about churches and would like to do it myself, if possible. Is that scriptural, or just plain absurd?

we could do whatsoever we wish to do. I do not think that getting rebaptized as I'm sure that as an infant you didn't have the knowledge of what happened to you and why it was done.

I believe that you should be baptized in the presence of other believers. The reason why is because it is an outward sign of what Christ did on the end side of our hearts. witnesses are needed.

the scripture below covers baptism. we are instructed to be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Also we are to be totally emersed in the water totally under.

You said, that you are skeptical of churches. I can understand your skeptism. maybe you could call around to different churches and ask about how their baptism services goes. this will give you a good hold on a biblical baptism from scripture

I find it very disconcerting that someone who eschews church and all that it entails---fellowship, instruction, ministry (INCLUDING BAPTISM)---and the command to not reject it, would adhere to another biblical command to be baptized---a command for the Church.

I believe that if you are baptized as a baby, this is dogma, and you have no idea what it is about. As an adult it is an affirmation of your faith, one you give knowing full well what it means. I was told I was baptized as a baby, but of course have no recollection. I did not know the Lord until much later in my life, and when I was saved I was truly baptized. This meant everything to me.

So scriptural evidence, probably not. Plain common sense and a declaration of a mature faith, yes.

My mother was rebaptized when she was about 70 I think. She says because she went through so much with my dads death, my sisters cancer and other things she just felt it was something she wanted to do and it made her 'feel' better. She felt she closer to God after and it wasn't that she lost her faith, stepped off the path but she felt she had lost some of the closeness she had since she had spent so long dealing with my dad and sister. I for one would never fault her for that especially in the light that she knew it was not necessary for any to do.

The whole point of Baptism is to make a public profession. Doing it in private would really not achieve that.

Although in the west there is little reason to baptise oneself, in the factual movie "Bamboo in winter" a 14 yr old girl is led by the Holy Spirit into a river to be baptised and take over the mantle of her marytered grandfather who spent his life taking the gospel accross the mountains of China and enduring grerat hardships and persecutions.

It blows my theology.

I think any church can baptize you as long as they do it in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Afterall, you are doing it as an outward sign of an inward conviction - not to join a denomination.

Actually, it does matter who baptizes you because baptism is for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38) and it has to be done for that purpose as we are to have faith in it.

Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. Colossians 2:12

That "operation" is the remitting of our sins.

If you are not baptized for the right reason then it doesn't work.
