Bible Translations - New Twist!

There are lots of threads here at Worthy asking what is the best Bible translation, but I'd like to know what do you think is the worst translation?

My pick is:

The Message/New World Translation (tie)

Also, what do you think is the worst so called "Christian" book?

I would go with the Message as well

Worst book? Something I bought when first saved called "The Simple Truth - a bare bones bible" (it lived up to it's promise I was to find later, as being "bare bones")

Any "Inclusive" translation of the Bible makes me kinda nauseous. As for bad books, I'll have to think on that, though I'm tempted to say anything by any "prosperity" preacher.

I'm not qualified to vote on the worst translation for I really don't look at many of the newer ones.

Yeah, I think the Message Bible is pretty twisted from what I've seen. If I hadn't been comparing verses from other translations, I wouldn't even had known it was a bible.

As for christian books in general, I haven't read one in decades.

The Message Bible is more like a someone's sermon on the Bible than an actual Bible. Sometimes it's a good aid as far as highlighting Scripture a different way, like someone might do in a sermon. But one needs to recognize it as one man's interpretation and thus should be received with a grain of salt. But we should do that with any sermon, really. Check all things with the pure word.

one book I wasn't too impressed with was called "The Contagious Christian." I had to read that when I was doing studies to get a minsters license some time back. I don't remember who wrote it, but it is at home collecting dust on my book case.

Is that the Bill Hybels one? If it is, I'd burn it.

I have to pretty well agree. I have a calendar w/ random verses for the day from various translations. Some of those verses are from The Message and while it certainly wouldn't be my choice for serious study, it does once in a while make some sense. I liked one verse in particular from Proverbs or Psalms that talked about not going to "smart mouth college." I thought it was rather cute and it made sense for the context.

I don't like when someone takes Hebraic understanding of blessings and birthrights and then "Gentilize" the promises to fit "believers" today as a replacement theology. They are two different things.

True. But I've heard people say that since we have been "grafted on to the vine," those promises are also ours to claim. How would you respond?
