Apparently, it isn't all that uncommon for meteors to hit our atmosphere. Having one large enough to have an impact like this is, though.

A meteor hitting the sea would be known for causing a tsunami more so than killing what was in the sea, I would think. So I'm not so sure the "like a huge mountain" would be a comet or meteor.

I read last year a novel that depicted that scenario. Apparently the tidal wave action is theoretically different than that caused by earthquakes. And potentially much larger. Of course hawaii got wiped out in the book. It did need to have impact lol to sell.

It would be an astroid unless it was made of Ice.

That would create a huge shock wave in the water that would hurt a lot of sea life. Like using explosives to fish.

Saw a report of 1000 injuries. When the meteor exploded some tens of miles above the earth, people rushed to the windows to look at the flash of light. The sonic boom/explosion which followed shattered glass.
