Christian parents donated much of my inheritance

Hi, my mother recently sold her parent's house and donated most of the money to bibles.

She claims God told her to do it. Trouble is that is her answer for most things which means there is never any legitimate come back. It has taken generations to acquire that money.

All my growing up years we lived on the bread line so that other Christians in ministry could have better than us. ( I never want my children to feel deprived in this way. It feels like every cause besides her own children is more worthy.)

Previously she had agreed to give us a substantial amount of the money and only gave us a small amount instead. We are not well off, have a large family to support and have always lived very frugally. I feel like she couldn't trust us to seek Gods will for the money ourselves. At the end of the day, I'm not wanting that money for now. Rather am concerned for the future, my sister's future, our retirement for which we have no savings, and the 11 grandchildren who will miss out.

Am I right to be upset or should I just be happy that many souls will come to The Lord through her generosity?

Sounds like you have a battle thriving in side you: flesh vs spirit.  In all my life I have also been considered poor in our society, but during the past few years, since my relationship with God has flourished, I find content in what I have.  We all would like an easy life.  I would love to be able to sit back and feel financially secure, giving to those whom I feel led to give, helping where I can, yet, to this day, that has not happened.

 

I will not stand in judgment about any actions other take, but I will encourage you to find peace in Him and remain content where you are, knowing that He will never leave nor forsake you.  Allow me to encourage your with these verses.

 

Hebrews 13:5

Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.

 

1 Timothy 6:7-9

For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.

I heard something I found interesting this week on the radio.

"There are over 70 references to being offended in the bible. And none of them are commendable."

I've had this replay in my head many times as I go through each day, and I've found it to be a hard lesson. My conclusion is it's not possible to never be offended, but for Jesus.

According to the scrptures God works all things to the counsel of his own will. Jesus was anniment about the good news being preached to the poor. There is a reason that the poor remain poor and the rich remain rich. Principalities and powers. Rulers of darkness hide the truth from people else they would be free.

My point is that If I am depending upon another to transfer their wealth to me because of some perceived right I have as an heir then I may be disappointed when my expectation is not realized because God's will was that I not receive it. My problem is with God then and not man.

All of my family have died except my mother. I have never received a single cent of any inheritance. I hold myself accountable as I placed myself in a position to have God exclude me from everything though I did not understand that for years.

I wrote all of the above for tge purpose of showing that in my case there was my part in things that I had to learn about in order to let go of resentments I held. I don't know your situation. That is between you and God.

I think for the most part I am content. I do not trust in riches nor desire to be rich. I have learned from her past lies not to trust her or count on any money from her at all. I guess this has just thrown me for a loop. My mother has been very controlling and manipulative so it is difficult for me to not see her decisions in that light. At the end of the day what is done is done. My husband is struggling more than I. I'm not game to tell my kids, although she showed me the receipt and wanted me to show them. Thanks, that is helpful. I just give the situation to God moment by moment and choose to stay in joy.

I agree that at the end of the day true wealth comes from God and should not be counted on as a right. I have learned the hard way not to trust on any money coming my way. Any is a bonus and a blessing from God. I look to him as my provider.

I guess the whole situation is teaching me what not to do with my own kids.

i understand your frustration! i'd feel betrayed and lied to, too, if i were in your shoes. but the problem is, it was never "your" inheritance. if it had been, your mother wouldn't have been able to donate it. i'm assuming here that your grandparents have passed away and that the house was left to your mother... please correct me if i'm wrong. in any case, if she had the sole legal authority to sell the house, and your grandparents had not made provisions in their wills for a portion of the proceeds to go to you and your sister, then it wasn't yours to begin with. 

 

on the other hand though, if your mother named a specific amount or percentage of the sale that she would provide to each of you, then she broke her word... and yeah, that's a legitimate reason to be angry, but it's fruitless to allow that anger to take root. and really, who among us is not guilty? whether as a parent who goes back on their word to their child, or whether as a child (even an adult child) who goes back on their word to the parent, or to a friend or a sibling or whatever, we ALL break our word. this instance just seems bigger because it is about money.

 

i'm not trying to sound harsh, really! but you need to let go of the anger. it will only eat you up inside and steal away precious time that could be spent loving your mom before it's too late. don't let satan use money as a way to destroy your family.
