Absolutely!  I believe they did get it wrong on purpose.  They knew in their heart divorce wasn't acceptable for any cause, but they asked Jesus about it to tempt him.  They knew he wasn't doing anything wrong healing on the Sabbath, but they accused him of sinning to bring charges against him.  

I agree with you as well that people are getting things intentionally wrong today.  I am in complete agreement with you.

They were hypocrites who loved darkness rather than light so that they could continue to try and hide their evil ways and true intentions...They not only misunderstood the true intent and spirit of the Law, but they also added to it and placed unnecessary and grievous burdens on others.

They might have believed that healing on the Sabbath was wrong,  and also been envious because they could not heal on any day, perhaps.   Today, this still happens frequently , including here and in churches - they are envious and jealous because they cannot heal (and 'regular' civilians/ men/ even children can heal),  and they often do not even believe healing is possible ! ! !    'They' say healers are of the devil,  and have made it illegal in the usa,  so it is often 'illegal' also..... for the same or different reasons as the ones who opposed Jesus 2000 years ago on earth.

Many people it seems try to get a better translation every year,  and never even get the general essence of it - as Jesus condemned the Scribes and the Pharisees who opposed Him of doing.   They had the best possible,  and still did not get it. 

This happens a lot today - not they have the best possible, but they just don't understand generally nor specifically what God is Saying because they don't submit to God nor gain (as a gift) understanding from Him.   Instead ,  with the 'details' of a so-called better translation,  they pick one another apart and "bite and devour one another" and try to prevent those little ones who are seeking the Kingdom of God from finding it,  without even knowing what they are doing.

Deep deep within JEFF you KNOW why they did as they did unto Christ .    Same things Rome and others do.

THEY WANTED THE WORSHIP OF MEN.  THEY DESIRED MEN TO LOOK TO THEM FOR ANSWERS and no one else , not scrip , not the law , BUT THEM .

THEY exalted their seat above the stars of heaven, THEY wanted the worship of men and preeminence.   THEM, not GOD , not anyone , not the law , not anything,

THEY wanted the worship and praise o men.    LOOK TO ME THEY SAY , I WILL BE YOUR GUIDE WORSHIP ME THEY SAY.    That is why they did as they did.

They saw the people going after JESUS and they did not like the attention on anyone but them.    Same with the popes and most men if truth be told .  THEY want to seem as the all wise

they want to changes thing to suit their own hearts desire and love to have the worship of men.

Amen...they were only worried about their own pride and self righteousness to make a show and get praise of men...They looked beautiful on the outside, but inwardly they were full of dead men's bones.

Yes mam.    Very true .    But no matter how the wool does shine , no matter how bright white it appears

IF one KNOWS JESUS they see the TEETH when it opens its mouth to speak and flee those voices they do .

IF one puts a chicken in a duck suit ,  How does one know if its chicken or duck.  THROW IT IN THE WATER and watch how it reacts .    YEP actions show a lot .

words can too as they teach so much false doctrine too.

Yep its so simple IN CHRIST to discern the fruits of the righteous in Christ verses those who appear as men of righteousness.

TOSS that chicken that is in a duck suit in the water of truth and it knows not how to react .   SEE its knows only BEING a chicken. no matter how well dressed as a duck it is.
