Government may declare same-sex marriage matter of national interest

OTTAWA (CP) - The Liberal government says it is prepared to declare same-sex marriage a matter of national interest to speed up debate on its controversial legislation. The government will use every available procedural means to pass Bill C-38 before Parliament's summer break, Liberal House leader Tony Valeri said Tuesday.

As a last resort the Liberals would appeal to the Commons Speaker to extend the session because of two items they believe are of national interest: the marriage bill and a piece of federal budget legislation.

"I want to take every available opportunity to extend the sitting," Valeri told reporters.

"My commitment is to deal with (C-38) at all stages and vote."

Critics suggest there's a simpler way the Liberals could guarantee a vote on same-sex marriage before summer: by invoking closure and cutting off debate.

But the government says it doesn't want to stifle debate on an issue of conscience and will attempt to extend the session instead.

The Commons is scheduled to rise this week and remain adjourned until mid-September.

The Liberals have already fired the first procedural salvo in their mission to extend the session.

The parties were slated to vote as early as Wednesday on a Liberal motion to keep the Commons open. Valeri said he had three weeks set aside to deal with the same-sex and budget bills.

But he conceded there's no guarantee the motion will pass without support from the Bloc Quebecois.

"It would be a very close vote. . . Without the Bloc's support the numbers are very tight," Valeri said.

While the Bloc supports same-sex marriage, it will not vote for the motion in its current wording because it fails to refer specifically to C-38.

Without new wording there's no guarantee the Liberals will use their extra time to pass the controversial bill, said Bloc House leader Michel Gauthier.

"When it comes to Liberals I only believe what's written and signed," Bloc House leader Michel Gauthier said Tuesday.

"If they don't write it, we have no faith in them."

But the Liberals have made the promise verbally and say there's no need to put the guarantee in the writing. Valeri said the opposition can still try amending it.

"There's no cuteness or ambiguity about what we're doing," said one Liberal official.

"We're not looking to extend hours for any other purpose or any other piece of legislation (other than same-sex)."

If the motion goes down, Valeri said his party will appeal to the Commons Speaker Peter Milliken.

You have a special burden up there, with your socialist government. I pray for your country regularly. I also pray for mine, as we seem to be following suit.

May God be praised and upheld in both governments. It will take activism on the Christian's part - are we up to the challenge? Do we care enough? Do we see the danger? It's scary how things have changed because of silence.

I continue to pray for Canada and you fine folks up there left to this scourge and rising tide. I fear for this Nation as well. We need a revival of God's Word. God's Word a fiery revival before we end up like Europe and just deny God alltogether. The Europeans have put God out of their societys alltogether and the consequences have been devastating. They are being overrun with immorality and Islam is gaining a foothold there.

The Netherlands has had Gay Marriage since 2001. The result has been a decline in Marriage across the Board. The Marriage rates there are declining fast. Not only has this fact been overlooked. A larger issue is that after gaining Gay Marriage rights. The Homosexuals themselves aren't even Marrying. Marriage as an institution has been devalued. Anyone can do it. The direct result has been an increase in illegitimate children being born out of wedlock. This is the enemy's doing. The other 2/3's of a generation he hasn't killed while in the womb? he is killing slowly and Spiritually. The Netherlands prior to legalizing Gay Marriage. Was one of the Most Liberal in social policy in the world. They legalized euthanasia(Which the U.S. already has followed in a dangerous precedent setting National way recently) and drugs. They were slouching towards Gommorah prior to sliding right on in. The assault there is across the Board. Ending in desolving the very fabric of a society. To the detriment of the society and most of all the children. The children will most be affected by drug legalization and euthanasia as a culture of death pervades their very growth and development. They are left handicapped by a lack of sincere committment in their parents private lives as well.

So you see the battle is already lost there. The Dutch have long time considered themselves enlightened. So enlightened that God and His Morality have been removed. Cleansed from their society. This is the effect of Moral Relativism. Wherein there is no absolute right or wrong. It is left up to the individual as to what in and of itself is wrong.

Belgium and another Country in Europe have legalized Gay Marriage as well. With their shortly having done so. There is no longstanding record as of yet to esatblish what has happened in the Netherlands. Be wise though. You can be assured that God is no fool. He is also a gentelmen and will oblige your request to leave your Nation alone. Then you will be at the whim of the spiritual authority's and principalities that will then have free reign. Spain is closely following and so is Canada. Most of Europe to include the biggies like France and Germany have legalized partnership laws(basically Gay Marriage light). Look where they are today? They are the architects of the removal of God from the European (EU) Constitution.

I see it as nothing more than a fight. The last fight for our children. If we lose this one????????

If Gay Marriage is instituted? It will become a hate crime to speak out against it. The Bible when it say's that Homosexuality is an abomination? It too will be labeled as hate. Matter of fact I believe in some parts of Canada it already is?

I'm so glad my province's Premier is opposed to the same-sex marriage bill...I wish Ralph Klein would go for Prime Minister...dang Liberals (aptly named, eh?) need to get thrown out of office.

Since the *civil union* bill was passed a few months ago in our country, there have been 59 gay marriages performed, according to our local news about four hours ago and our population is about on a par with that of NYC.
