I alway found that verse very revealing....it shows what Jesus is looking for— FAITH!

I noticed he did NOT SAY........” When I return, will I find Law-Keepers on the Earth.....”

Jesus remembered and MEANT what He said in His Earthly Ministry....” The RIGHTEOUS  shall LIVE by FAITH” He has returned to gather up those with IMPUTED FAITH, simply because they Rested in His Finished Work Of The Cross— Plus NOTHING !

The substance of faith is born out of His Word by belief
Rom 10:17

17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
KJV
It is the simplest of reasoning- as man has only two choices to believe God or consider Him a liar...
Faith has always been required even before the fall~ as everything was created then Adam and faith the necessary element as to the existence of all... answering as 'God's Word He The Creator of Adam and all else'... this is why it is written

Heb 11:1-3 & 6

11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.

3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
KJV

The whole of Luke 18 is about having faith, trust if you prefer in Jesus.

Most queries can be clarified by reading the context.  Chapter and verse divisions are not inspired, so read several chapters either side of a ' problem ' passage.

The distinctive of true faith is able to set all created elements in subservient position to The Creator; the greatest of this is self... as Jesus came not to be served but to serve so we the same... the heart that is able to do this with great joy understands the great privilege it is to place one's self to the total care of The Lord... We have began in a system that is manipulated toward darkness toward lie and if we do not reform our thinking to truth (God's Word) we will have a skewed understanding of what's what...

^^^ What he said! ^^^

And consider the literal meaning of the alternative and its implication: "When I return I will not find a single bit of faith." Does that not imply the work of Christ was fruitless? And is that not antithetical to the entire paradigm of Jesus being the "vine"?

Whatever is not from faith is sin (Rom. 14:23b).

He has spoken of this another way as well
Matt 7:11-14

11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
KJV
To serve God and not mammon is total faith requirement.... would you agree?

It would just seem to me the Lord is pointing out we should have faith in him, because he will avenge us speedily. For if the Lord avenges us, but we've lost faith and run off and done ungodly things while waiting, what happens to us?
