(FYI: I searched for this specific topic, and found threads with various comments on the subject, but no specific thread addressing the question of who the man-child is.)

In Revelation 12 the woman gives birth to a man-child. Traditionally it seems many thought Jesus was this man-child for a couple reasons. One reason is because it says in verse 5 that he "is destined to rule the nations with a rod of iron" and it similarly says this of Christ in Psalm 2:9.  However, it is also promised by Jesus that overcoming saints will also "rule the nations with a rod of iron" in Rev 2:27.

So Satan is cast down as a result of this man-child being caught up into heaven, and later in the chapter it says, "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. And they loved not their (soul) lives unto death." (verse 11)  Then it says in the next verse, "Therefore the accuser of our brothers is cast down, who accused them before our God day and night." (verse 10)

And there are other things in Rev 12 that don't line-up well with saying Jesus is this man-child, and also don't line-up that Mary is the woman here . . . (one thing: where specifically is Jesus now called a "child"?)

So who do you think this man-child is and what supports your thinking?

I don't have much time right now, but I thought I would pop in and answer your question regarding where Jesus Christ is referred to as a child:

For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us; And the government will rest upon His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.  (Isaiah 9:6 NASB)

I may (or may not) return later on to participate further. :)

Thanks bro! He was certainly born as a child (as we all were), but I'm wondering how much that label applies to Him now or in Revelation 12 . . .

In my sampling, most theologians and scholars agree that the man or male child can only be Jesus Christ, and Matthew Henry leaves a couple of other views open. A few samplings are below:

5. This verse records the first element of the story. The messianic child comes, finishes his mission, is delivered from the dragon, and is enthroned in heaven. John again refers to the destiny of the child by alluding again to Ps 2:9: “Who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter” (Rev 2:27; 19:15). Some exegetes, using passages such as Da 7:13–14, 27 (which seems to fuse the individual son of man with the people of God) and Rev 1:5–6; 2:26–27; 11:15 (which alternates between the rule of Christ and the rule of the saints), see a collective identity in the birth of the male child. It is, however, difficult to see how the child as well as the woman could be a group of believers. Through Christ’s resurrection and ascension, the dragon’s attempt to destroy God’s purposes through the Messiah have been decisively defeated.11 Barker, Kenneth L. Expositor’s Bible Commentary (Abridged Edition: New Testament). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House, 1994. Print.

Verse 5 describes Jesus in words taken from Psalm 2:9, as is done elsewhere in Revelation (2:26–28; 19:15). The child’s ascension to heaven to rule with God on the throne depicts Jesus’ ascension after his death and resurrection (Luke 24:50–53; Acts 1:9–11) to the right hand of God (Acts 7:55–56; Rom. 8:34; Eph. 1:20; Col. 3:1; Heb. 1:3, 13; 1 Pet. 3:22). The people of God flee from the dragon (Rev. 12:6), but God is protecting them for the 1260 days of their persecution (see comments on 11:2).11 Elwell, Walter A. “Revelation.” Evangelical Commentary on the Bible. Vol. 3. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Book House, 1995. 1216. Print. Baker Reference Library.

Conflict Between the Woman and Her Son, and the Dragon (12:1–6)

Revelation’s plot development breaks here to make way for the appearance of a great sign in heaven. John alerts his readers that what follows is symbolic. The paragraph develops the conflict between the “dragon” on the one hand and “the woman” and her “son” on the other.

12:1–2 John sees first a woman who is pregnant, in labor, and at the point of delivery. The twelve stars (representing the twelve tribes) and the identity of the child she bears (“one who is to rule all of the nations with an iron rod,” 12:5) indicate that the woman is most likely ancient Israel.

12:3 The next symbol John sees is a great dragon. The dragon has swept one-third of heaven’s stars to earth and now prepares to devour the woman’s child at birth.

12:4 The dragon prepares to devour the woman’s child at birth.

12:5 The woman gives birth to a male child. The male child is identified as “one who is to rule all the nations with an iron rod” (12:5)—and this can only be Jesus Christ (19:15). Despite the dragon’s intentions, heaven snatches the child out of the dragon’s reach.

12:6 The woman flees the dragon by hiding out for 1,260 days (forty-two months of thirty days) in a place God has prepared for her .

a male Child. Jesus Christ in His incarnation was of Jewish descent (Matt. 1:1; 2 Tim. 2:8). Despite Satan’s efforts to destroy Israel and the messianic line, Jesus’ birth took place as predicted by the prophets (cf. Is. 7:14; 9:6; Mic. 5:2). rod of iron. Describes Jesus’ coronation as King over the nations of the world (cf. 11:15; 19:15; Ps. 2:6–9). her Child was caught up to God. Christ’s ascension is in view (Acts 1:9; 2:33; Heb. 1:1–3; 12:2).11 MacArthur, John, Jr., ed. The MacArthur Study Bible. electronic ed. Nashville, TN: Word Pub., 1997. Print.

II. The unsuccessfulness of these attempts against the church; for, 1. She was safely delivered of a man-child (v. 5), by which some understand Christ, others Constantine, but others, with greater propriety, a race of true believers, strong and united, resembling Christ, and designed, under him, to rule the nations with a rod of iron; that is, to judge the world by their doctrine and lives now, and as assessors with Christ at the great day. 2. Care was taken of this child: it was caught up to God, and to his throne; that is, taken into his special, powerful, and immediate protection. The Christian religion has been from its infancy the special care of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ. 3. Care was taken of the mother as well as of the child11 Henry, Matthew. Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible: Complete and Unabridged in One Volume. Peabody: Hendrickson, 1994. Print.

Hi VA,

Here are some of my notes from my blog - Revelation in detail. Rev. 12 is part of Vision 3, Christ the Mediator.

Christ the Mighty Victor.

Man is vividly conscience that he is unable to meet the demands of a just God. Thus the need for the Mediator, an advocate with the Father, One who is a faithful friend and who fully knows our cause. He needs to be able to protect our highest interests, and deliver us from the enemy.

It is Christ who has secured the supreme victory over the greatest foe. He has decisively triumphed in the age-long battle of good and evil, truth and error, light and darkness, life and death.

Christ the Mighty Victor has never suffered defeat; at Golgotha He gained a mighty triumph, an unprecedented conquest, and an incomparable victory.

 Christ`s Scriptural Identity.

`Now a great sign appeared in heaven:

a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet,

and on her head a garland of twelve stars.`

                                                                                                   (Rev. 12: 1)

We are now shown from where the deliverer would come. In Genesis 3: 15 God foretold that the `seed,` of woman would crush the serpent, (Satan). The deliverer would come as a seed, not a tree, meaning not fully grown. He would also come through God`s special nation of Israel. This is shown by the symbols `sun, moon and stars,` representing Jacob, Rachael and their 12 sons, the tribes of Israel.  (Gen. 37: 9)

Satan`s Scriptural Identity.

Next we see read of Satan`s origins. He came from the heavens to the area of the earth. He had aspired to be as God but was cast down and with him a third of the angelic hosts.

`And another sign appeared in heaven:

behold, a fiery red dragon having 7 heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his head.

His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth.`

                                                                                                                                           (Rev. 12: 3 & 4)

This description of Satan reveals him as one who masquerades as an angel of light and then shows his authority over the kingdoms of this world. Note the word `seven,` in Heb. means to be complete. He has complete control over the kingdoms of the world.  (John 5: 16)

              Red – fire like – flame coloured,  fig. lightning. (2 Cor. 11: 14   Luke 10: 18)

                   Dragon –  a fabulous kind of serpent ,  to fascinate.  (2 Thess. 2: 9)

              7 heads –  Complete authority.  (1 John 5: 19)

              7 diadems –  Complete rulership. (Matt. 4: 8 & 9)

              10 horns -  Lawlessness,  power.  (Eph. 2: 2.     2 Thess. 2: 8 & 9)

 Jesus the Promised Child.

Jesus is the promised Son, the Child that Israel would bring forth to be the ruler of Israel and the kingdoms of the world.

                                `For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given;

and the government will be upon His shoulder.....

upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,.....

from that time forward, even forever.`

                                                                                                      (Isaiah 9; 6 & 7)

Satan, through King Herod tried to kill Jesus when He was born.  (Matt. 2: 16)

`Then being with child, she cried out in labour and in pain to give birth......

And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth,

to devour her Child as soon as it was born.`

                                                                                                               (Rev. 12: 2 & 3))

Jesus was born of David`s line, in the nation of Israel. He is their Messiah but they did not receive Him. After His crucifixion and resurrection, He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father on His throne ready to `rule the nations with a rod of iron.` (Ps. 2: 9     Rev. 2: 27)

`She bore a male Child who was to rule the nations with a rod of iron.

And her Child was caught up to God and His throne.`

                                                                                         (Rev. 12: 5)

Israel, the Woman.

We now move in time from where Jesus was taken into heaven, to the time where He told Israel to `flee to the mountains.`   (Matt. 24: 15 – 21)

`Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God,

that they should feed her there 1260 days.`

                                                                                                   (Rev. 12: 6)

The archangel Michael, Israel`s `great Prince who stands guard` over them, is now brought into the battle to protect the nation from Satan and his evil angels.  (Dan. 12: 1)

         `And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon;

and the dragon & his angels fought, but they did not prevail,

nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer.`

                                                                             (Rev. 12: 7 & 8)

`So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil & Satan,

who deceives the whole world; he was cast out to the earth,

and his angels were cast out with him.`

                                                                                         (Rev. 12: 9)

Good morning, Marilyn C,

Accurate and well-written post. I want to discuss one paragraph, particularly a little more, having a couple of questions and a comment or two, ten, or a hundred. 😊

"We are now shown from where the deliverer would come. In Genesis 3: 15 God foretold that the `seed,` of woman would crush the serpent, (Satan). The deliverer would come as a seed, not a tree, meaning not fully grown. He would also come through God's special nation of Israel. This is shown by the symbols `sun, moon and stars,` representing Jacob, Rachael and their 12 sons, the tribes of Israel."  (Gen. 37: 9)

Genesis 3:15 (KJV) And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. [emphasis added]

Genesis 3:15 is the first prophecy of the Bible. Generally, something mentioned first in theology, especially in a list of things, is the most important, and special attention should be applied.

Enmity:  : איב; < *ʾaibā, BL 590g; MHb. enmity Gn 3:15 Ezk 25:15 35:5, hostile disposition Nu 35:21f; —cj. Ezr 3:3 (בְּאֵ׳ despite the enmity, Rudolph). †[1]

We agree on the meaning of this prophecy, and to paraphrase to my way of thinking, two opposing kingdoms: And I (Jesus) will put a hostile disposition between thee (kingdom of Satan) and the woman (kingdom of Israel) in which the Messiah would come.

Not one but both kingdoms have "seed." Seed: semen, children; offspring, descendants, families. I can take this to mean that Israel will increase in descendants and the kingdom "thee" (Satan).

We see how the kingdom of Israel grew, was fruitful, and multiplied; what about the kingdom of darkness? I believe just a bit later, after the first biblical prophecy, we get an answer in Genesis 6:1-4. The common retort is always:

Mark 12:25 (KJV) For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven. [Keyword, heaven]

If “which are in heaven” were left out, it would support a different view of my thinking.

The two-thirds of the holy angels that remained loyal to God are innumerable and do not need to procreate. Satan wants to even the military odds a bit for the final battle. An angel's power is unimaginable, and they can transform themselves. It does not say angels cannot procreate with humanity; it identifies where they do not, in heaven.

The lowest rung in the hierarchy of the evil spiritual realm, demons, can physically indwell human flesh. What is the primary occultic practice performed in rituals historically? What is the goal of this practice?

I am nitpicking here, but why do you think the "moon" represents Rachael? Bilhah or Leah—Rachel, Joseph's mother, was already deceased, making Bilhah, Rachel's servant, his stepmother (v. 10), and Leah the chief wife.

As always, discussing the fine details with you is a pleasure. Yes, I know, I am over-opinionated. LOL

So @Marathoner @Dennis1209 @Selah7 @R. Hartono @Marilyn C let's look at what I stated in the opening post:

1. Believers are also told they will rule the nations with an iron rod (Rev 2:27) - so we can't say this only applies to Jesus, right?

2. In verse 11 of Rev 12 it says "and THEY overcame him (Satan) by the blood of the Lamb," etc.  Do you not believe it was because of these ones that the devil was ejected from heaven?

Also, why would this chapter suddenly look backward upon the birth of Jesus, when the book of Revelation is stated to be forward looking in nature? "The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must shortly take place." (Rev 1:1)

Just my 2₵ worth, but adjusted for inflation, I will give you my $15.79 value. 😊

Things which must shortly take place are in the eye of the speaker and beholder (2 Peter 3:8).

Revelation 1:19 (KJV) Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter; [past-present-future]

Generally, we see the past, present, and future written in the first three chapters of Revelation. Beginning in chapter four is the future of John’s Day. Revelation 12:1-17 is what is known as a parenthetical. The parenthetical chapters are 7, 10, 11, 13, 14, and Revelation 12:1-17.

pa•ren•the•sis \pə-ˈren(t)-thə-səs\ noun: plural -the•ses \-ˌsēz\ [Late Latin, from Greek, literally, act of inserting, from parentithenai to insert, from para- + en- en- + tithenai to place—more at do] circa 1550

1          a: an amplifying or explanatory word, phrase, or sentence inserted in a passage from which it is usually set off by punctuation

b: a remark or passage that departs from the theme of a discourse: digression

2:         interlude, interval

3:         one or both of the curved marks ( ) used in writing and printing to enclose a parenthetical expression or to group a symbolic unit in a logical or mathematical expression—par•en•thet•i•cal \ˌper-ən-ˈthe-ti-kəl, pa-rən-\ also par•en•thet•ic \-tik\ adjective—par•en•thet•i•cal•ly \-ti-k(ə-)lē\ adverb[1]

By removing the parenthetical chapters, I believe the book of Revelation would be in complete chronological order.

Presently Satan and his minions still have limited access to the throne of God to accuse the brethren. Job 1:6 (KJV) Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

Quote: “Do you not believe it was because of these ones that the devil was ejected from heaven?”

I am not exactly sure of the question here. I believe verse eleven speaks about the martyred Tribulation saints, and these overcame the Devil and Antichrist by the blood of the Lamb and would not budge from their saving faith.

The “age of Grace,” or the church age, has ended. Those that accepted the Lord during this period will have to endure to the end, most likely becoming martyrs.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
