I know you asked clouds but I would like to add to his explanation that  praying in tongues and speaking in toungues are two different thing, in one you speak a different language that you may not know but there will be people who know, speak and understand that language and able to interpret it because its their own language or mother toungue (which happened in the upper room), and the other one is some utterance that you utter during worshipping or prayer time where you and others doesn't have any understanding of what your are speaking bcos you utter mysteries by Spirit(1 Corinth 14:1-2). If that make sense.

You can have Understanding though you are " praying ' in tongues.... Understanding or Interpreting is a Gift, like 'speaking in an unknown ( to you) language or the language of Angels which an Interpretor will be present..... There are different types of ' tongues' which simply means ' language's ....  I heard an entire sermon spoken in English by my Pastor( who only speaks English) & a guest who only spoke Spanish was there with a friend ,she was translating to him in Spanish & he asked her why she was repeating everything the Pastor was saying.... She remained silent, after service I asked how her friend liked the service and they Testified - he ' heard ' the sermon in Spanish,in his native tongue

Glory to God....

Thank you for replying!

So reading above passsge its my understanding  that some of the benefits are- To edify themselves,  bcos you're not speaking to people but God, and no one understands them bcos its a mystery by the Spirit. Its for yourself during your own quite prayer times.

Shalom!

You're very welcome!  It seems to me the person speaking doesn't even understand what is being said, based on 1 Cor 14:14 - For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

That's why the person needs to pray for understanding, in order to speak in church.

Yes, it does.  But v.14 forbids speaking in tongues in church if there is no one to interpret.

Praying in tongues(Not referring to different known languages)!! What are the benefits of praying in tongues?? According to the bible and also personal experiences are welcome too. Any thoughts are welcome and appreciated.  Thank you.

I've never read about tongues and got "it mans world known languages". Did not Christ say you will speak with new tongues? Luke 11:13 how much more will your heavenly Father give the holy Spirit to them that ask. Have you received the holy spirit since you believed. What are the benefits. Were all in this world together and it hits us 24/7. So many times I feel (we walk by faith not feelings) lost .. where is GOD you know lol. You start to pray in the spirit at first its just you but at some point as its written He takes over...ohI don't have the words. Please no offense to anyone if I do tell me pm me I will say sorry. I can't imagen one moment without the sweet sweet holy Spirit. Peter never stopped at repent and be saved but said then you shall receive the gift of the holy Spirit.

Heard a preacher not to long ago .. not someone I ever listen to. He was talking about sin and how sometimes we get stuck in it. He said try praying in the spirit and you wont sin. See praying in the spirit and sin pops up.. you have to make a choice.. stop with GOD and sin or pick the sin over Him. He already made a away out since He said He will.

I am a perfect example of what happened in Acts still happens today. I was blessed? Well at 15 or so there was no internet no cell phones so I didn't here anything about the holy spirit and speaking in tongues. They asked.. I said yes I want it.. they only read verses never added as in (what that verse means and what Jesus was trying to say". Just read Luke 11:13 then prayed a very short prayer stopped said "thats it you got it". See they believed they knew they had faith that if GOD said it.. if you ask the Father for the holy Spirit HE will give it. No one said a word. I got up went to sit down and tongues just came out. Exactly like it happened in the Acts. HAHA... I had no clue.. other then.. it was written. Its so simple. He stands there asks and?

So it was like day and night. And heres the odd or strange part? Not the right words but.. its never old.. it never once gets old. Its better the the 1st time better then the last time. HOW it can get better and more beautiful. Never the same. You start He take over.. seen so much from it. See if I bring this up before Him and say maybe "well so and so said".. haha.. no it comes back "I said". So just ask Him don't believe a word I say. I am no one. Just pray seek ask HIM not what any man/womans says. Wise to ask but at some point we need to take it before HIm and ask Him about it not just believe because my pastor or his pastor said. He walks with me He talks with me.. He is alive and well. I can not imagen this life with out it. So many times I get stuck I pray in the spirit and.. always know what to do.

I don't believe speaking in tongues is a real thing.  It's just people making up nonsense.  In the Bible, speaking in tongues was a miracle only because the disciples instantly could speak another language. A real language, like Spanish or Latin.  I totally believe that is real.  If they spoke some made up jumble of words, nobody would be able to understand, and everyone would have thought they were just crazy.  Made up language that nobody but an "interpreter" can understand sounds like a way to manipulate people.  Watching good ol Kenneth Copeland going off mumbling nonsense then begging people for money comes to mind.

There is praying in tongues of angels between that person and God.

I attend a Nazarene Church, and we fund missionaries all over the world.   We have reports where people converse with groups of people, not knowing their language.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
