Please tell me... When is the Sabbath?

I was just wondering if the Sabbath was Saturday or Sunday? I have heard different ppl say different days. Also our calandar's week starts Sunday making Saturday the last day of the week.

Is the day important or a matter of picking one and observing it as the Sabbath?

The sabbath day is the seventh day of the week, but;

I saying this Jesus finished sabbath observance. Jesus Christ finished His redemptive work and completed His victory over death, Hell, and the grave at the close of the seventh day sabbath of the old law and He rested on the first day. The first day of the greatest victory for God and the universe. It was the great day of triumph over sin, satan, death, and Hell. It was the day of joy and praise because of the resurrection, which guarentees the salvation and eternal life of all men who believe (1 Cor. 15; Rom. 4:25; 5:10; John 14:19; 1 Pet. 1:3; 3:2).

It was on the first day of the week that Christ met with His disciples. Exactly one week later on the second first day of the week He again met with them (John 20:19, 26). This was no mere accident. The Lord wanted to sanction that day as the one to be observed from that time on.

Christians can celebrate any day they choose. Most prefer to get with what Jesus and the apostles did.

Scripture states that the sabbath can be celebrated on any day one chooses. The New Testament does not command men to keep any particular sabbath. On the contrary it teaches that men can choose which day if any that he wants to keep unto the Lord (Read Romans 14:5-6; Gal. 4:9-10; Col. 2:14-17).

Conserning meats and sabbath days: "One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. LET EVERY MAN BE FULLY PERSUADED IN HIS OWN MIND. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day doth not regard it. . . . But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at naught thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. . . . So then every one of us shall give account of Himself to God. LET US NOT THEREFORE JUDGE ONE ANOTHER ANY MORE" (Rom. 14:1-13; Gal. 4:9-11; Col.2:14-17).

If the law of Moses, including the fourth commandment, was in force in the New Covenant the above statements would have never been written by Paul. Each Christian can do as he pleases concerning the sabbath and he is not to be judged by his brother "any more."

The apostles here did away with all keeping of the law, sabbath keeping and cricumcision and stated in no uncertain terms that Gentiles were not to keep the Old Law of Moses which included the Old Jewish sabbath.

Included in this apostolic decree that Christians are not to keep the law in any detail was the very sign of law keeping which was abolished------circumcision. Even those who keep the Lewish sabbath do not practice this, thus proving again their inconsistency in requiring men to keep the law they themselves do not keep (Ex. 12"44-48; Lev. 12:3; John 7:22-23).

The Sabbath of the old testament is the seventh day of the week which is Saturday. Remembrance of that day and the charge to make/keep it holy.

When Jesus came and taught us and gave us new commandments for the new covenant, he sriritualized the ten commandments and gave us the way to actually live by them and not break any of them.

Examples are murder where we are not to even hate each other. Or not to commit adultery we are not to even look upon another with lust in your heart. He summed up the commandments as to love God with all your heart and soul and love your neighbor. As for the Sabbath, he does not really want a single day from you, he wants it all...... every minute of every day no matter what you are doing or where you are... If you have Sabbaths it's ok..... if you don't esteem any day over the other then that's OK too.

Go back to the old testament and read about what the sabbath was all about and you'll find it had nothing to do with going to church. They were not to even go out of their houses or even work enough to even build a fire if your fire went out. Picking up sticks cost one fellow his life.

No one that I have read about actually keeps the old testament Sabbath today....... and very few give Jesus their entire lives every day.

The Sabbath spoken of Exodus is Saturday. According to Moses and the list of commandments that he presented any work on Saturday is breaking this command including causing anyone else to work, work is work also. That means both cooking and cleaning, this is why Orthodox Jews today prepare their meals the day before the Sabbath.

The High Holy Feast days did not always fall on Saturday.

Shavout(Pentecost) was always 50 days after the Feast of Passover and always fell on Sunday(the first day of the week) And still does to this day. And Jews still celebrate this Feast day and it always falls on a Sunday as it has since the beginning God initiated that Feast.

Shavout, (Pentecost) was when the Holy Spirit was given to the 120 in the upper Room. There were many Jews there for the celebration of the Feast of Shavout (Pentecost) and Peter preached to them and 3000 were ADDED to the Church that day.

Go back to the OT and you will see that 3,000 were killed on that day when Moses recieved the 10 commandments.

There were 2 Sabbaths the week Yeshua was crucified.

Saturday (the 7th day) is the Sabbath Day according to God. That has never changed. It was not set aside as a day of worship. We can worship God every day.

And prophecy states that when the New heavens and New Earth are established All flesh will come to worship God from one New Moon to the next and from One Sabbath to the next.

My calendar starts the first day of the week on Monday, Sunday being that last day of the week. As God did I start my work week on Monday and honor the Sabbath on Sunday. If you can prove that God did not start His work of creation on Monday then I will buy one of your man made calendars and worship on Saturday. Until then I will use Monday as the start of my work week.

Irregardless of what your calender says, Sunday is the first day of the week, and other than a Work Day Calender I've never seen one that has Monday as the first day of the week.

Are you telling me that you know the exactly how many days ago our Creator said, "Let there be light"? If you do please tell me and I can divid that number by 7 and we will know for sure what day is the first day of the week. Unless you can do that you are going by a man made calender that has nothing to do with God.

We have been commanded to work for six days and worship on the seventh. Now most people work from Monday to Friday at a paying job and work Saturday around the house, worshiping on the seventh day Sunday.

For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Work six days and rest on the seventh, get it? If your man made calendar is what you base the sabbath on, I would suggest you us the calendar I do, also made by man.

The seventh day like every other day of the week is not eliminated? Saturday still rolles around as it always has and will continue to do. People can keep this day holy if they so wish if it suits them. What Scripture teaches is that people now can choose which day they wish to keep holy.

Observing the Sabbath day and all its rituals and laws which were given to Israel these blotted out by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and a New Covenant now exists.

The Word, who became flesh, created all things, therefore it was He who rested on the seventh day. It was He who made the sabbath. He is Lord of the sabbath and as such He can and did have the authority to do what He did.

Jesus is; "Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:" (Eph. 1:21).

The Father Had Given Jesus all power and dominion over all things;

Abraham was the father of both Ishmael and Isaac, but Ishmael had no part in Isaac's inheritance (Gen. 21:9-21). God was the author of both covenants, but one was designed to bring death and guilt of sin, and the other was designed to bring life and freedom from sin. There can be no keeping of both.

The law was a covenant of types and shadows and was abolished when the realities of those shadows appeared. "Having ABOLISHED in His flesh the enmity [the law of bondage and death], EVEN THE LAW OF COMMANDMENTS contained in ordinances. . . . Paul says that if righteousness comes by the Law, then Christ died in vain.

God never forces anyone to do what they do not want to do. Therefore, as i have repeatedly said, anyone can worship in any way they choose! I have ene put up Scripture which clearly says this.

"Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days" (Coll. 2:16).

Simply put, the whole law of God and MOSES, including the ten commandments, and all the civil and ceremonial laws based upon the ten commandments, was done away with and abolished in Christ on the cross and the New Covenant now takes the place of the Old Covenant. This is plainly stated in 2 Corinthians 3: "Who hath made us able ministers of THE NEW TESTAMENT . . . . if THE MINISTRATION OF DEATH, WRITTEN AND ENGRAVED IN STONES (the ten commandments); was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not steadfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance WHICH WAS DONE AWAY. For if THE MINISTRATION OF CONDEMNATION be glory, MUCH MORE doth THE MINISTRATION OF RIGHTEOUSNESS EXCEED IN GLORY. For even that (the old covenant) which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth. For if that (the old covenant) WHICH IS DONE AWAY was glorious, MUCH MORE that (the new covenant) WHICH REMAINETH is glorious. . . . not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not steadfastly look to the end of that (the old covenant) WHICH IS ABOLISHED: But their minds were blinded: for UNTIL THIS DAY remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of THE OLD TESTAMENT; WHICH IS DONE AWAY IN CHRIST" (2 Cor. 3:16-15; Col. 2:14-17; Eph. 2:15). The word "vail" in this verse 14 is not in the original Greek, so it is not only the vail that is "done away," but it is the old covenant itself WHICH IS DONE AWAY in Christ on the cross.

Some people need an interpreter to explain this simple passage, but to the common reader it is clear that the old covenant has been "done away" and "abolished" entirely and the new covenant has taken its place. The ten commandments were the only part of the law that was written and engraved on tablets of stone so they were done away with on the cross (Ex. 24:12; 31:18; 32:15; 34:1-4, 27-35; Deut.4:13; 5:22; 10:4). Some argue that it was only the glory of the old covenant that was done away, but what good is an old covenant that has lost its glory? Why contend that we should keep it when we have a better and a new covenant that is more glorious and which remains in force?

Paul argues that the old covenant was given in glory, so if its glory is done away the covenant itself is also done away.

Leaving out the second "glory" in verse 7 and the second "vail" in verse 14, which are not in the original Greek, we have the fact plainly stated in both verses that it is "the old testament; WHICH IS DONE AWAY IN CHRIST." In verse 15 the old covenant is called "MOSES" thus proving that Moses gave the ten commandments.

Note the following contrasts between the old and new covenants in 2 Cor.3;

The first is "old" and the second is "new"; the first brought "death" and the second brings "life"; the first was "glorious" the second is "much more glorious"; the first brought "condemnation" and the second brings "righteousness" which free from condemnation (Rom. 8:1-4); the first was "the letter" and the second is of "the Spirit"; the first had "no glory" in comparison to the second "by reason of the glory that excelleth"; the frist was "done away" and "abolished" and the second "remaineth"; the first came by "Moses" and was "done away in Christ"; the first required a vail to hide the glory because it was "the ministration of death" but the exceeding glory of the second can be looked upon with "open face" because it is "the spirit that giveth life"; and the first brought blindness and bondage while the second brings enlightenment and liberty and changes character by the spirit of the Lord.

A mere change in administration of the old covenant the failure of either party in keeping it, or the place where it is written does not change the covenant from a old to a new one. Nor does such change its glory in any sense as some argue in trying to get around this plain Scripture which says three times that the old covenant was "done away" and once that it was "abolished" in Christ. Any change in the administration of a contract or the terms of a will would not change the will or contract itself. A will or a contract itself would have to be changed or a new one take the place of the old one if it would be "done away" and "abolished" as is here stated of the old covenant.

Christ came to "fulfill" the law before He "abolished" it on the cross (Matt. 5:17, 18). The Greek word for "fulfill"is PLERO, to satisfy, execute, finish, end, make complete, and cause to expire. It is translated "Fulfilled in connection with many prophecies which came to an end when they were "fulfilled" (Matt. 1:22; 2:15, 17, 23; 4:14; 8:17; 12:17; 13:35; 26:54-56; 27:9, 35; ect. That the law also ceased to be in force when it was "fulfilled" is clear from (Matt 11:13; Luke 16:16; 24:27, 44; Gal. 3:19-25). The law was only a shadow of things to come and when these realities came the mere type, picture, or shadow of them was no longer needed (Col. 2:14-17; Heb. 4:1-11; 8:1-6; 9:1-10; 10:1-18).

The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by "Jesus Christ" (John 1:17). This not only proves that the law was not made know before Moses, but that is was replaced by the new covenant of grace and truth when Christ came.

Some teach Isaiah 8:20 holds us to the Old Covenant and all its Laws. This is not so.

Isaiah 8:20 has nothing to do with honoring the sabbath, or keeping the old covenant which has been done away and has been replaced with the new.

Isaiah 8:20, Isaiah the prophets great call to all men to try everything by the revealed Word of God (Verse 20). Anything contrary to the written revelation of God is of demons and satanic spirits, and not of the Holy Spiirit. The written Word of God is the true light; and those who want light and truth will follow it and reject all things to the contrary.

Verse 21; "And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward," They who live not in the light of God's Word will walk in Spiritual darkness. They shall wander here, and there through it (Immanuel's land, Palestine-the subject of this prophecy, Verse 8). hungry and oppressed by the judgments of God through other nations fretting themselves in themselves in spite of their trust in demon spirits who promise them help; and they will curse the king and their God for their miseries (Verse 21). They shall look up to heaven and down to the earth for help and shall find none; they shall have trouble and spiritul darkness and anguish to the point of dispair (Verse 22).

The following is prophecy, and Isaiah called all men to try everything by the revealed Word of God.

That being said, Scripture teaches that God foretold in prophecy that He would do away with the sabbaths, and feast days: "It was fortold that the sabbath would be abolished because it had become something to be abhorred by God The reason God hated it was because of the sins and hypocrisy of Israel in keeping the sabbath which was a "sign" between Him and Israel. "I will cause her mirth to cease, her feast days, her new moons, AND HER SABBATHS, and all her solomn feasts" (Hosea 2:11).

"Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats. When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts? Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto Me; the new moons and SABBATHS, the calling of assemblies, I CANNOT AWAY WITH; it is an iniquity, even the solomn meeting. Your new moons and your appointed feasts MY SOUL HATETH; they are a troubleunto me; I AM WEARY TO BEAR THEM. And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.(Isiah 1:10-15).

Also, "I will also cause all her mirth to cease, her feast days, her new moons, and her sabbaths, and all her solemn feasts (Hosea 2:11);

"But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years" (Galatians 4:9-10)

"Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ" (Collosians 2:14-17);

People can worship on any day they choose as the Scriptures, and the New Testament, the New Covenant teaches;

"One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living" (Romans 14:5-9).

As I said earlier. If anyone lives by the Law, after Jesus has fulfilled the Law and has done away with it, they must live by all its precepts which is impossible for men to do, and this is why the Old Law, could not save anyone, and only Jesus could fulfill it. Once he fulfilled the entire Old Law it could then be abolished and a New Covenant was ushered in.

" Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 5:20-21);

"What shall we say then? SHALL WE CONTINUE IN SIN, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that HENCEFORTH WE SHOULD NOT SERVE SIN. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not SIN therefore REIGN in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are NOT UNDER THE LAW, but under grace" (Romans 6:1-14).

God has made it very clear plainly showing why the Old was fulfilled by Jesus, the only one who could fullfill the Old, which had to be abolished so that the New can be ushered in. I stoped counting when I reached about 300 Scriptures? If one takes the time to read all these Scriptures in becomes very clear.

1. One is called "the first covenant"; and other "the second covenant" (Heb. 8:7; 9:1-18; 10:1-9);

2. The first is called "the old covenant'; the second is called the "new covenant" (Matt. 26:28; 2 Cor. 3; Heb. 8:13).

3. The first covenant was given by Moses; the second by Jesus Christ (John 1:17; Gal. 3:19; Heb. 9:15; Matt. 26:28).

4. One is "the law of Moses"; the other is "the law of Christ" (Acts 13:39; Gal. 6:2).

5. One is "the law of sin"; the other is "the law of righteousness" (Rom. 7:7-25; 8:1-4; 9:31).

6. One is the law of "the flesh"; the other is "the law of the Spirit" (Rom. 7:5, 6; 8:1-4; Gal. 5:16-26).

7. One is "not of faith"; the other is "the law of faith" (Gal. 3:12; Rom.3:27).

8. One is the "yoke of bondage"; the other is "the law of liverty" (Gal. 5:1; James 1:18-25).

9. One is brought to an end by Christ (Rom. 16:4; 2 Cor. 3:14; Heb. 10:9); the other is established by Christ (Heb. 8:6; 9:15; 2 Cor. 3:6-18; Matt. 26:28).

10. One brought death; the other brought life (2 Cor. 3:6-18; Rom 8:1-4; Gal. 3:21; Heb. 9:15; 10:1-18).

11. One makes guilty (Rom. 3:19-20); the other justifies or makes not guilty (Acts 13:39; Rom. 3:21-31; 5:1-11).

12. One is "a shadow of things to come"; the other is the reality (Col. 2:14-17; Heb. 10:1-18).

13. On is "fulfilled" or completed; the other is still in force (Matt. 5:17, 18; 2 Cor. 3:6-18; Heb. 10:9).

14. One demanded righteousness; the other gace righteousness (Luke 10:28; Rom. 8:1-4; Gal. 3:1-29; 5:1-26).

15. One made nothing perfect; the other made perfect (Heb. 7:19).

16. One was glorious; the other was more glorious (2 Cor. 3).

17. One was powerless to save from sin; the other saves to the uttermost (Heb. 7:11-28; 8:7-13; 9:9-28; 10:1-18).

18. One had many sacrifices; the other had only one (Heb. 9:9-14; 10:14; Rom. 6:6-13).

19. One had a changeable priesthood; the other did not (Heb. 7:23-28; 4:14-16; Rom. 8:34).

20. One remembered sins; the other forgets sin (Heb. 10:3; 8:12; etc.),

21. One had a representative and a seasonal access to God (Heb. 9:7-10; the other had a personal and daily access to God (Heb. 4:14-16; 7:25; 10:19, 20. Eph. 2:18).

22. One had a sinful ministry (Heb. 5:1-4); the other had a sinless ministry (Heb. 7:26-28; 2 Cor. 3; 1 John 3:9).

23. One was given under the Levitical priesthood (Heb. 7:11, 12); the other under the present Melchizadek priesthood (Heb. 6:20; 7:11-12, 24).

24. One had an earthly tabernacle service of animal sacrifices (Heb. 9:1-10); the other had a heavenly tabernalce of services of spiritual salvation (Heb. 4:14-16; 7:25; 8:1-5; 9:11-15).

25. One had a sinful mediator (Gal. 3:19); the other had a sinless mediator (1 Tim. 2:5; Heb. 7:26; 1 Pet. 2:22).

26. One had no eternal inheritance (Romans 4:13); the other has an eternal inheritance (Rom. 8:17; Heb. 9:15; 1 Pet. 1).

27. One was ratified by animal blood (Ex. 29:1-8; Heb. 9:16-22); the other by the blood of Christ (Matt. 26:28).

28. One was a law of works; the other a law of grace (John 1:17; Rom. 3:24-31; Gal. 3:10-12; Eph. 2:8-9).

29. One brought wrath (Rom. 4:15); the other brought salvation from wrath (Rom. 5:9; Gal. 3:13, 14).

30. One could not redeem; the other could (Gal. 3:10-14; Rom. 8:1-4; Eph. 1:7; Col. 1:14; Heb. 7:25).

31. One could not satisfy God's demands; the other did (Gal. 2:21; heb. 7:22; 8:6; 10:5-18).

32. One made no provision for doing miracles; the other one provided fro them (Gal. 3:1-5; 1 John 5:8; John 14:12; Luke 24:49).

33. Prophecy fortold the abolishing of one and establishing of the other (Isa. 51:4; Jer. 31:33; Acts. 3:22; Heb. 8:7-13; 10:4-18; Rom. 11:25-29).

34. One had a fleshy sign of obedience (Acts 7:8; Rom. 2:25); the did not (Rom. 4:11; 1 Cor. 7:18).

35. One was too weak to overcome sin; the other gave victory over sin (Rom. 6:1-23; 8:1-4; Eph. 2:8, 9; 1 John 5:1-18).

36. One was made to be changed (Heb. 7:11-22; 8:5, 6; 9:9, 10; 10:1-18; Gal. 3:19-24; the other was made to be unchanged (Heb. 7:22; 8:6; 10:9; 13:20).

It is easily sumerised by the following passages.

"For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost" (Romans 14:17). "For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him" (Romans 14:2-3).

By being sinless and remaining sinless whilst on the earth, something man could not do, Jesus fulfilled the Law. The reason Jesus gave His life was to redeem mankind, nothing more!

Sin is the breaking of these commandments which are the only part of the Old Testament retained as part of the New Testament.Compare and check these Scriptures.

SABBATH: sabbaton~ The second 'b' expresses intensity here and the root word actually means to 'cease'. It actually has become a burden considering the regulations and rules of the mishna. Depending on the rabbi or rabbinical order depends on opinions on this observation. This is why Jesus was questioned upon the healing that occurred and threshing later. Holding that the law was more important than healing or eating.

The sabbath was made for man to reflect upon our Father, His works and the works of His Son Jesus ..Thus everday should be the sabbath.

It is not a day of refreshment and relaxation as many would think. patricia1
