I was wondering if it is wrong to listen to secular music while still being devoted to God i mean like not cussing rap and crappy stuff like that i mean the clean secular bands please get massive comments on this one i want to clarify this now

Blessing GTG, I'm old school so I don't have a problem listening to "old school music." And it's during family get together (at someone else home) that it's played.

I don't own secular music any more, it's because of a church that I first joined when I was young in Christ, and just about every thing was considered "worldly."

I have since learned better, but still will not buy it.

If you know it's stirring any thing in your spirit (sexual) or causing you to look back and hurt, you know it's going against God, then you know that it not to be listen to.

The enemy is very slick and you must be very careful to what you listen to and not fall into his hand....

I love God with all my very being - I do enjoy all kinds of music. I like classical music and have classical training. I like 40's music and love to remember the way my parents danced in the kitchen to "Always". I love hymns of praise and some of them touch my heart with a feeling like no other.... and I enjoy listening to the voice of the incomparable Billie Holliday ... I enjoy John Fogerty and The Beach Boys and Aerosmith and Lynerd Skinner, Bob Seeger ... lots of different music. But... I love God.

Most everything in the world is secular -- "Not concerned with or devoted to religion." The 6 o'clock news, the mall, McDonalds. Not everything in the world is evil. It's a pity when Christians try to make it that way.

That doesn't mean that you should listen to music you find offensive or watch obscene movies.

Personally I like to crank up some old school music every now and then. Crank it up and rip off the knob! Nothing wrong with the windows vibrating. Me trying to sing, though, ought to the a sin.

It is a personal choice. For me, it only reminds me of the drugs that went along with the music, so I just don't listen.

I probably look at it slightly differently....I believe all of us are made in the image of G-d, and have varying degrees of creative ability...which in itself is G-d-like, and part of what He invested in us as His creation....this can apply to anything of a creative nature...ultimately culminating in the creation of another being.

There is a lot of really good secular music that I enjoy, especially Jazz, Blues, Opera, Classical, and others. If I discover something about the players that really strikes me as unsavoury or anti-G-d, then I don't listen to them any more, and naturally if some lyrics are really crass, or not very edifying, I will give up on it....but I get really blessed by such alot of secular music, and even if the artists do not acknowledge G-d, I certainly thank Him for the gifting in these people.

My 2 cents. Botz

A Christian follows Christ, can you see Jesus spending time listening to vain janglings? Everyone wants to defend their personal likes but a Christian has died to self and only seeks to glorify God.

Before being saved, I used to love to go dancing at bars. Brings back memories that I want to forget! Secular music just makes it too easy for my flesh to attempt to draw me back into things I don't want to think about. Since I got saved, I listen to K-Love now, which has great Christian music with a lot of the same beat, only they all glorify God, not my flesh or Satan. Big difference.

Is listening to secular music a sin even though it does not have cussing or bad ideas?

I love this question because I truly belive that any music that does not honor God is putting any Christian at risk.

My reasoing for that is this and this is only my personal conviction from the Holy Spirit.

There were 3 archangels: Michael the archangel of war, Gabriel that archangel of messege, and Lucifer (who is known as Satan) was the archangel of Worship.

And one of the ways we worship God is by music.

With this personal conviction I feel that if it is not Honoring God than it is a sin. I have challeged myself and my leaders of my youth group to listen only to Christian music.

That is even excluding bands like Switchfoot. I am talking about bands that you know without a shadow of doubt you know they know God. We have been doing this since July and to be honest with you my days seem so much better. I mean when all you have is God on the mind from music, it just brings an awesome joy to my spirit.

I hope this helps you

Hey I like Switchfoot a lot! Some of their lyrics doesn't seem very religious (for a lack of a better word). But they are Christians and they sound great, so I listen to them.

I would like to make some rhetorical statements just to get you thinking. That is all.

To ask such a question like "is secular music sinful" shows one has a dualistic worldview. Is that Biblical? The notion that this is worldly (sinful) and that is Godly (edifying/OK). If God created everything, is anything inherently evil? Music is not inherently evil, because God created it.

Asking your students to avoid all music except Christian music might be asking too much. What happens when one of them gets into Metallica? Will they feel they have failed and quit coming to church altogether?

With this personal conviction I feel that if it is not Honoring God than it is a sin.

I'm not sure where you get such an idea. How can you watch the 6 o'clock news?

If we have to be bombarded with religious ideas from radio and TV 24/7, it would drive anyone crazy. I LOVE Christian music, but I don't listen to it all the time. We have to have some down time, even from religiosity. I love to fish but I can't fish 24/7. That doesn't mean I'm not a fisherman. Neither does listening to other types of music mean I am not a Christian.

Finally, I think that challenging your teens is a great thing. But expecting them to never listen to their favorite music is overboard and not required as a Christian.

Is listening to secular music a sin even though it does not have cussing or bad ideas?

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
