I know I've heard quite a few Christians claim we should not engage in self defense which I assume for them they would allow a criminal to have their way once they break in.

What did Jesus tell us to do?

Luke 6:29  "To him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and from him that taketh away thy cloak withhold not thy coat also."

He's no respector of persons.... so since he told them to buy a weapon then we can as well.  It'ss not a commandment, but a permission.

And, you know He actually used a whip and hit people with it when He was running the money changers out of the temple... so we know He's not opposed to using weapons for self defense.

I'm not so sure Jesus was talking about someone swinging a sword or pointing a gun in your face.  Second swats or discharges don't always happen.

If anyone could stand by and watch their wife or daughter being molested and had access to firearms, I would have no respect for that person that would not stop it.

Indeed, wise council. Though, it doesn't prohibit owning guns, nor really address weapons of any kind one way or another, but rather address our behavior on certain situations-situations that are made clear when the verse is taken in context, and not singled out to push an agenda.

If you understand the customs of that time, he's speaking of insulting someone, not threatening to kill them.   If someone insults you as was custom by smiting them on the cheek, turn the other cheek and let it go.  He's not talking about someone trying to harm or kill you.

Plus, most people who are shot don't die.

I have owned guns since a child. I have often tried to place myself in a (mentally) in a position where when carrying would shoot a person to protect myself. Not sure what I could do. Its another matter to protect someone else. I am thankful, the Lord has not put me in that position.

Exactly!  That would be an extreme situation and as such it would not be a sin before to use deadly force in self defense.

Yep, if all they are doing is slapping you... I could let that go.

Now, if they want to escalate from there and start beating me, I'd have to escalate my efforts to put a stop to that.

And, I'd rather not test the things about "most people who are shot don't die"

Simply make the decision before hand... if it's a good shoot, then take it.  If you haven't made up your mind, then when the time comes you'll probably hesitate would could be a lethal mistake.

It's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6 as they say.

And, in some states now, if you have legitimate fear for your life, you will not be charged and you cannot be sued in civil court for defending yourself with deadly force.

It's not a nice subject, but in today's world its a every real possibility to have to shoot someone considering the lawless times in which we live.

I like to pray and ask the Lord to lead me and guide me and alert me as to whether I should not go someplace... or maybe pick a different time as to steer clear of potential trouble.

The best defense is the leading of the Lord as He will deliver us from the traps (snares) of the devil and He promised in Psalms 91... IF we believe His Word!

FYI - on your post above, it is better to use the "quote" button at the bottom when quoting someone.  That way it attributes it to them and they are also notified that you have replied and quoted them.  The way it's being done now, they may not see your posted reply, as they won't be notified.

Also, if you want to quote multiple people, use the "+" button and it will keep adding posts to your reply.  It then shows up in a button on the right side.

Try it out, it's pretty cool!

Yes, I can picture Jesus doing that.   He used a weapon to throw the money changers out of the temple.

Personally,  I used spot lights and tranqizer guns.   In my younger days, I lived in a dangerous neighborhood when one had to use deadly force.  The Police loved me because I took out many murders, rapists and home invaders when they entered our families homes to harm us.

Exodus 15:3
“The Lord is a warrior;
The Lord is His name.

1 Samuel 17:45
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted.

Amos 9:5
The Lord God of hosts,
The One who touches the land so that it melts,
And all those who dwell in it mourn,
And all of it rises up like the Nile
And subsides like the Nile of Egypt;

The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.

Isaiah 10:16
Therefore, the Lord, the Lord Almighty, will send a wasting disease upon his sturdy warriors; under his pomp a fire will be kindled like a blazing flame.

Isaiah 42:13
The Lord will march out like a champion, like a warrior he will stir up his zeal; with a shout he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies.

Jeremiah 20:11
But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior; so my persecutors will stumble and not prevail.

Jeremiah 51:56
A destroyer will come against Babylon; her warriors will be captured, and their bows will be broken. For the Lord is a God of retribution; he will repay in full.

Zephaniah 1:14
The great day of the Lord is near— near and coming quickly. The cry on the day of the Lord is bitter; the Mighty Warrior shouts his battle cry.

Zephaniah 3:17
The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.

Psalm 149:6
May the praise of God be in their mouths and a double-edged sword in their hands,

Revelation 1:16
In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.

Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

Revelation 19:15
Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.

Revelation 19:21
The rest were killed with the sword coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
