Forces of Cultural Change: Explaining the Shift in Public Attitude on Same-Sex Marriage

By Carol Swain , CP Op-Ed Contributor

April 1, 2013|11:15 pm

Last week I wrote about public opinion polls, arguing that they are influenced by people's desire to give socially acceptable answers to human questioners and that poll results can differ vastly when a robotic caller is employed. If, however, we accept as true a shift in public opinion on same-sex marriage, what trends and forces explain that change?

The most visible is the entertainment industry's increasingly affirmative depictions of homosexuality. Soap operas, such as All My Children, that introduced gay themes and gay relationships as early as 2000, movies like Brokeback Mountain, The Color Purple, and Precious, and the continuing string of actors and actresses who have come out in recent years have no doubt helped move public opinion toward support of same-sex marriage. Although most religious groups, including non-Christian ones in their orthodox forms, oppose same-sex marriages, there are notable exceptions among Christian groups. Episcopalians, Unitarian Universalists, and the United Church of Christ all support same-sex marriages. The ordination of gay priests and same-sex marriages continue to split numerous churches and denomination.

Besides the endorsement of gay marriage in Hollywood, another force of cultural change is our schools. Public schools have pushed an agenda that includes the normalizing of homosexual relationships and greater tolerance for sexual exploration. Increasingly, young people are surprising their parents by coming out of the closet. Bible-believing Christians are surprising their friends, neighbors, and congregants by shifting their stance to one of acceptance when a relative adopts a gay lifestyle. These are the times in which we live. Moreover, we can expect the percentage of young people who express same-sex attractions to grow because of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) propaganda campaign that is taking place in many public schools across the nation.

We now know how men like Jeremiah and Joel felt as they stood by watching their society crumble from the inside and saw the gathering storm. They even shouted out in warning but no one believed them.

Joe 1:1

¶ The word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.

Joe 1:2

Hear this, you aged men, and give ear, all you inhabitants of the land. Has this hpppened in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?

Joe 1:3

Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.

Here's where we are;

Jer 36:22

Now the king sat in the winter house in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him.

Jer 36:23

And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four columns, he cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.

Jer 36:24

Yet they were not afraid, nor tore their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words.

I believe there is another factor in play, beyond the ones mentioned. People are being publicly shamed, at work, at family gatherings, on Facebook, and other places to accept this as normal, or they get ridiculed. Pier pressure has a good deal to do with it, and it is being applied with a vengeance.

yes. truth offends. being intolerant is now considered hate crime.

I completely agree with this statement, in fact this is the one that seems to be my personal biggest pressure...moreso on facebook than anywhere else, because there is such a mix of people. I have learned in recent years to be very careful about what I post because the backlash can be intimidating.

I agree; I've seen others upbraided because of their 'intolerance' and I've made up my mind on the subject. I oppose gay marriage and anyone who tries to intimidate me about that stance will find themselves crashing headlong into a stucco wall. Christians have to stand their ground....

I would add with the U.S. Supreme Court removing the foundation of all morality, the Bible from the public school system in 1963.

And prior to this, in 1962 the same Supreme Court removed prayer from the public school system.

More recently, in 1980 the Supreme Court overturned a Kentucky law requiring them to post the Ten Commandments in every school that was funded with private contributions.

"New" worldly religions are now reigning supreme in the classroom. Such as hedonism, self esteem, perverted sex education, yoga, eastern mysticism, evolution, etc... :crosseyed:

My grandmother used to tell me of talking and chewing gum being the "big" problems in her school days.

In part, when I was in, it was sex, drugs, guns, and knives. :o

The removal of prayer, God and His Word from the classroom defines my grandmother's generation from this generation today.

The Christians foundation starts at Genesis, and ends with Revelation.

We knew these events would be happening - what surprises me is the speed at which all of this is coming - weeks of decades. It is amazing at the number of 'Christians' who are accepting all these ungodly changes and falling away. It's as though you know you are going to be hit by an out of control car but cannot swerve out of the way but just watch it happen. On the large scale it is out of our hands it is only what we can say that may have an affect on others eternal future. Stay faithful and keep looking up our redemption draws nigh - the problem is that we do not know how long. Remain faithful to the end.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • George Whitten, the visionary behind Worthy Ministries and Worthy News, explores the timing of the Simchat Torah War in Israel. Is this a water-breaking moment? Does the timing of the conflict on October 7 with Hamas signify something more significant on the horizon?

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this study, I'll be focusing on Daniel and his picture of the resurrection and its connection with Yeshua (Jesus).

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
